Newcastle And Reims Keen To Do Deal This Month For Striker Hugo Ekitike

Sky Sports are reporting this morning that Newcastle are still in talks with Reims about their talented 19-year-end striker Hugo Ekitike.

And the good news is that Ekitike is keen to join Newcastle this month.

The urgency of getting a striker in has quickly diminished, with Burnley’s 30-year-old Chris Wood joining Newcastle for around  £25M today – said to be the release fee in his contract.

But it may be even less than that.

Sky Sports report that Newcastle and Reims are getting very close to a deal for Ekitike and both clubs want to do the deal this month.

The latest is that Newcastle want to pay £22.5M upfront and then £2.5M in potential add-ons based on performance for the impressive young Ekitike, who has scored 8 goals in 18 games in Ligue 1 this season.

Newcastle also want to give Ekitike a five-year contract, and you have got to believe his wages will be a lot more than what he’s getting at the French club.

Here’s a piece from Sky Sports News’ correspondent Dharmesh Sheth:

“Talks are still ongoing between the two clubs. There’s still a will to get this deal done. It’s worth around €30M (£25M) – that’s €27M (£22.5M) upfront, with add-ons making it around €30M.”

“I’ve also been given a few details about the payment structure. It would be spread – like a lot of transfers are – across the proposed five-year contract.”

“As it stands there’s still a small gap in the valuation between what Newcastle want to pay and what Reims want.”

“Significantly, the player does want to come to Newcastle.”

This looks very promising, and it’s not an urgent signing as long as we can get it done this month.

But on the other hand, if we are that close – do the deal and get him in – it will add to the momentum and the fact that players are willing to join the newly rich Newcastle this month.

What we do need is a new center-back for Saturday’s game, but that’s now looking doubtful, with any new player needing to be registered tomorrow by noon to be able to play against Watford.

What do you think?

    Webon –

Seriously man, he’s 39! He has barely played all year. His level is League 1 at a max now.

Only Zlatan and arguably Joaquín are capable of playing outfield at the top level at that age currently.

I mean no disrespect but your suggestion to sign somebody deemed surplus to requirements at Rangers is genuinely laughable.

Totally agree about left back. Opponents will always attack weakest point

Henderson would be a great keeper for us to get could be the difference maker in close games with super saves

Seriously doubt Man Utd would sell him to us but we shall see

We are getting linked with players none of us have heard of for 35m and creaming ourselves. Could be a complete waste of time but because he’s lots of money we say sign him. It’s fickle to do this and like we are doing, buy experience regardless of age.

Let’s agree to disagree and move on

    magscar,
Interestingly enough, the majority of his goals come in the second half of the season.

We have been linked to players in every position, including Digne at left back. I don’t think it’s a priority to sign someone in that position when we have Lewis to come back soon, plus Dummett, Trippier, Ritchie, and even Clark who can play that position.

Gotta focus on the priority positions first. Signing 4 or 5 players this window would be a very good result.

Playmaker also needed. We have 30 per cent of ball in most games. We can fire loads of aimless crosses into the box but we need more of the ball in dangerous places to exploit Tripps crosses.
Midfield is either dribblers who do not see a pass or statues. Box to box midfielder who can go past a player and then see the pass. They are as rare as gold dust and cost

    CLINT FLICK,
Adamn_92 made some great points which explained why I’ve also cooled on him, plus we never had Joelinton as a box to box back then when I was pushing for him.

webbonufc – I’m all for experience as long as they still have the ability. That’s why we signed Wood and Trippier.

We’ve signed 2 quality players who have lots of experience of the PL and are still quality.

Some of these players from abroad can be easily researched and have potential.

But like you say, can agree to disagree here…

Jail – in theory, Joelinton would be played as a wide attacker, similar to his role before he joined us. But if Eddie is seeing him in central midfield, I’d say our 4th priority signing (after a centre back) is a right sided attacker/ winger. Fraser, Almiron, and Murphy just don’t perform.

    Right.
I get ya…but, vdb is small and tricky, mobile and i reckon would link up well with Jo, like.
Lingard just seems like a no brainer, too.

Discussing Defoe doing a job for us is pointless to be honest.
    1. Because of his age and 2. He’s already on record stating Howe didn’t know how to manage him after a disappointing spell at Bournemouth.
I remember him being mentioned by the Bournemouth fans on a Eddie Howe tribute video, saying they were excited by Defoe’s arrival, but he refused to buy into the way Howe sets Bournemouth up so flopped.
