Newcastle Unlikely To Have Another Transfer Breakthrough Before The Weekend

Eddie Howe will give his press conference ahead of Watford on Friday. It will be interesting to hear the team news with so many players missing over the past few weeks due to injuries and Covid.

Howe, of course, has two new arrivals with Kieran Trippier confirmed last Friday and Chris Wood in the door this morning. Trippier made his debut against Cambridge in the FA Cup last weekend.

Wood trained with the lads today so any ill-effects from the groin injury he suffered in Burnley’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat against Huddersfield appears to be minimal. The striker was replaced at half-time.

Newcastle’s push to land a center-back this week appears to have come up short. There’s no movement on our pursuit of Diego Carlos or Benoit Badiashile. Sevilla are reluctant to sell their defender while Monaco want upwards of £50m for Badiashile.

There has also been no reported progress in talks for Hugo Ekitike. Newcastle were reportedly close to a deal to bring the 19-year-old prodigy to Tyneside. The striker missed Reims’ 0-0 stalemate at Clermont Foot on Sunday due to a red card suspension.

A couple of midfielders have hit the headlines today. The Manchester Evening News is reporting that Donny van de Beek’s representatives have sounded out both Newcastle and Dortmund over their interest in the Dutchman. On Wednesday, Luke Edwards reported that both Van de Beek and former-Magpie Giorginio Wijnaldum have come up in discussions on Tyneside.

At the moment, Manchester United are unwilling to sanction an exit for van de Beek while Wijnaldum has been linked with Arsenal. Both would be excellent loan signings but will probably not move until late in the window, if at all.

On Wednesday, The Mail reported that Newcastle were interested in RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara. However, the 23-year-old’s £33m release clause is not active until the summer.

There is another report today that Newcastle may try to land the box to box midfielder in this window. If Newcastle can convince Leipzig to sell the Mali international for a reasonable fee in January, this could be one to watch in the coming weeks.

For many, the focus is narrowing in on the six-pointer against Watford. Newcastle are desperate for three points and could climb out of the bottom three with a victory.

Newcastle will head off to Saudi Arabia during the two week break after the Leeds game. Isn’t that a bit of a risk, jet lag and all that when I think it would be better spent closer to home and any new signings can integrate with the squad? Not fond of that idea. The players don’t need a holiday, they need to work hars and get us out of this mess we’re in at the bottom of the table.

If I remember rightly, lualua scoring against us while on loan is what prompted the PL to change the rules.

TDS – I recall Lua Lua’s joy at scoring against us! Sir Bobby was not impressed either.

Saudi Arabia trip could be good as well though, bit of team bonding especially if there’s a few new signings.

Jail….that Good Friday game. My wife and I were staying in York for a few days and went to pub to watch the match. Got there early, next to TV, had a curry and was enjoying it. 5 mins before game, pub filled up with Leeds fans. Was an interesting atmosphere to say the least. Tried not to jump up when we went 1 up. Was gutted when Wood scored towards end….and bar mats were flying all over amongst cheers. Anyway, we had last laugh and went up as champions 🙂
Always (ironically) had a soft spot for Wood after that. He looked cold, strong, and clinical…and has since

Adamn – what if we sign players late in the window, are they stuck here training on their own? If they go to Saudi Arabia after the window closes it’s even worse as we will definitely be jet lagged for the next game on the 8th February.

    JP,

There’s only 3 hours TZ difference between Saudi and the UK, that’s not a big deal, same as going from east to west coast in the US.

    Ace50,
Aye, gutted about the goal and especially since it only came about because a drunken Leeds fan had pitch invaded and caused the extra time. If anyone remembers Rafa had enquired about Chris Wood but it was dismissed as we already had a Championship striker!!

    Adam,

That’s my thoughts also re the clubs players trip to KSA. I believe it will be a good team bonding trip. Hopefully we could have 4-6 new players in the squad by that time. Great time for all to get know one another.

they hop on one of the many private planes the saudis have and that will no doubt ferry our team to and from saudi

Going to Saudi during the break is an awful idea, totally disruptive, and could get us relegated if we lose the Everton game when we game back.
Not to mention it’s likely to be pretty hot over there and the training probably can’t be as intense as it should be, and any late new signings won’t be able to be train with us.
That’s what happens when you get non-football people running the club.
Just wait until pre-season if they want us to go over there, what’s the big rush.

    Macas,

You actually make some decent points there tbh. However, I’d think they would mainly train in doors the training facilities are second to none apparently so tbe facility will be all set up for inside air conditioned set up.

With all the incomings it’s a good opportunity for the team to bond that bit more, if we get 6 points against Watford and Leeds which is a huge possibility then tbe whole squad would have a great feel good factor. I think it’s a great move personally but I also get your post.

    Jail,

I think Wood is a great signing albiet not a luxury one. However it’s a perfect astute signing for where we are now. I have great faith he will do very well. I’ve always seen him as a dangerous player when we played Burnley and I’m happy is here now with us. Great signing 🙂

Posters like Robleenio and Bam Bams were really top posters and just disappeared. I’d have thought they’d come back as the blog is pretty much less of a battle ground these days and more football related talk. Would love to see the above 2 back on here. Haven’t told anyone this until today. A guy at the gym I got talking to last week. Turns out he’s he’s been a steward at the club in the Milburn stand for the last 22 years. Good news, seems like he really has been working there. Bad news. He’s absolutely thick as foot and can’t seem to get a word of sense out of him 😕 Ie. Didn’t even know if Shola was still at the club???
