Newcastle Unlikely To Have Another Transfer Breakthrough Before The Weekend

Eddie Howe will give his press conference ahead of Watford on Friday. It will be interesting to hear the team news with so many players missing over the past few weeks due to injuries and Covid.

Howe, of course, has two new arrivals with Kieran Trippier confirmed last Friday and Chris Wood in the door this morning. Trippier made his debut against Cambridge in the FA Cup last weekend.

Wood trained with the lads today so any ill-effects from the groin injury he suffered in Burnley’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat against Huddersfield appears to be minimal. The striker was replaced at half-time.

Newcastle’s push to land a center-back this week appears to have come up short. There’s no movement on our pursuit of Diego Carlos or Benoit Badiashile. Sevilla are reluctant to sell their defender while Monaco want upwards of £50m for Badiashile.

There has also been no reported progress in talks for Hugo Ekitike. Newcastle were reportedly close to a deal to bring the 19-year-old prodigy to Tyneside. The striker missed Reims’ 0-0 stalemate at Clermont Foot on Sunday due to a red card suspension.

A couple of midfielders have hit the headlines today. The Manchester Evening News is reporting that Donny van de Beek’s representatives have sounded out both Newcastle and Dortmund over their interest in the Dutchman. On Wednesday, Luke Edwards reported that both Van de Beek and former-Magpie Giorginio Wijnaldum have come up in discussions on Tyneside.

At the moment, Manchester United are unwilling to sanction an exit for van de Beek while Wijnaldum has been linked with Arsenal. Both would be excellent loan signings but will probably not move until late in the window, if at all.

On Wednesday, The Mail reported that Newcastle were interested in RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara. However, the 23-year-old’s £33m release clause is not active until the summer.

There is another report today that Newcastle may try to land the box to box midfielder in this window. If Newcastle can convince Leipzig to sell the Mali international for a reasonable fee in January, this could be one to watch in the coming weeks.

For many, the focus is narrowing in on the six-pointer against Watford. Newcastle are desperate for three points and could climb out of the bottom three with a victory.

Re the trip to Saudi, they’ll probably be using the manure camps to train in, wonder how long before they are revamped/named.

Staying at The Ritz Carlton Riyadh Private Wing maybe – or some group (we call them compounds) of private gated villas with private pools and mega security, whichever they go for, it’ll be literally another world for them.

Oh and the weather here is currently glorious, mid 20s every day, so all good.

Finally I think it will just show the players what they can be part of, they’ll be truly wowed, i mean, there’s private jets and yachts, and this firm’s private jets and yachts.

Shola was infuriating when he played, might as well have had pockets in his shorts. Sone games never broke into a jog. Stole a living at the toon. Because hes a nice guy and one of our own…. Awful attitude on the pitch.

    Morning troops.
    Welcome to the Toon.
I just hope we don’t start just lumping it up to the big man every time we get it.
I’m sure Howe has a better plan than that though.
That’s Burnley cattled. We just need to buy a couple of Watford’s less shoyte players and that should be that. Cunning!

Newcastle remain in contact with Lille over defender Sven Botman & await response from Sevilla to £28m offer for Diego Carlos. Also talks with Monaco re Benoit Badiashile & Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti has been put forward as loan option

From last night, yes my free hit last game week helped me take the H2H points against you but has now reverted to my previous squad.

I’m now faced with a choice of making a few changes and taking a -12 points hit just to get a team out or using my wildcard to go for wholesale free transfers which unlike the free hit are permanent.

Looks like wildcard option for me. I’ll worry about getting my AFCON and injured players back in a few weeks.

    Wor B,
If your team is in a real state then WC isn’t a bad idea at all, don’t just focus on the double game week though and make a plan to get Salah back rather than spreading the funds.

RE the training camp in Saudi, I seem to remember in the fog of Bruces reign that we were totally shite in his first year, got knocked out in the first round of the FA cup, and the team were swiftly shipped out to Saudi (much to the total derision of the fans) but we came back and went a pretty good run.

So if history repeats itself its a thumbs up from me!

just for the avoidance of doubt this could have happened under Rafa…me memories not what it was 🙂 🙂

What is the big fuss about training in Saudi during the break about? A lot teams does that, less risk of injury and better endurance training in warm than cold weather.

    GUARDIAN – Wood shows Newcastle’s short-term aims

Jackie Milburn, Malcolm Macdonald, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer … Chris Wood? The New Zealander filling a Callum Wilson-shaped hole in Newcastle’s attack, and the £25m paid for a striker with three goals all season, shows the difficulty of recruitment in the January transfer window. Wood, a decent, troublesome and unselfish forward, will have to do for now as Newcastle look less a superclub in waiting than Burnley-on-Tyne, with Wood joining ex-Claret Kieran Tripper in their ranks under a former Turf Moor manager in Eddie Howe. Harpooning the chances of a less wealthy relegation rival is the limit of Newcastle ambitions for now – and until the drop is avoided, the club can only operate on such a short-term footing. What fans might have said if Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce had turned to Wood as the answer is one for the birds. A first Wood goal in seven weeks and a defeat of Watford, another relegation rival, is desperately required. JB

Unless the club have been keeping a transfer extremely quiet and secretive, with only 3 hours till our deadline for Watford I think it’s safe to say we won’t see any other new players in for it.

I’m fine with that, we’ll have Trippier added to the defence and have a more than capable striker up top to cause the Watford defence problems. We go into the game with a stronger starting 11 than we had in our last league game against Manure.

Nervous of course, but also excited for the match. It’s a nice feeling actually looking forward to our matches now!

Not sure who, but I feel like we’ll hear about a breakthough for one of our targets by the end of the day. We seem to be pushing hard for Carlos, Etikite seems like genuine interest on our end or maybe we’ll hear about this mystery midfielder we’re allegedly looking to make our marquee signing. Fingers crossed we hear something.

Training with much better facilities and having some team bonding with a trip away somewhere can only help the squad. I don’t see any negatives and it’s not far enough away to cause any fatigue either. Only positives from the mini break to train out there. Might even help fire some of the players up by showing them what’s in store down the line in terms of facilities and possibilities.

Enjoyed the stadium tour, not so much the bus trip trying to keep 30 kids in check!

I think the arrival of Wood and Trippier will give the squad a massive lift, players are now going to start fearing for their place and we should see them stepping up a gear to make sure they’re not left out.

Hopefully mate. I think by this time next week there will be at least two through the door but could be more.

We’ve heard positive movements on the Carlos deal so fingers crossed that can push on before the weekend is out. Etikite Is advanced but still a little off price valuation from Reims but close enough to think a deal can be struck. I’ve also never gave up hope for Botman with everything still on the table.

A very interesting week to come and like you say that CM marquee signing that’s got all our interest well perked.

If they pull off Haidara I’ll be shocked but elated

Down side was, took me in dressing room and there was Micky Quin who yes I knew and went into full on conversation with me, would have been nice, but he was totally naked and didnt seem to care, lets just say, not a pleasant site
