Newcastle Unlikely To Have Another Transfer Breakthrough Before The Weekend

Eddie Howe will give his press conference ahead of Watford on Friday. It will be interesting to hear the team news with so many players missing over the past few weeks due to injuries and Covid.

Howe, of course, has two new arrivals with Kieran Trippier confirmed last Friday and Chris Wood in the door this morning. Trippier made his debut against Cambridge in the FA Cup last weekend.

Wood trained with the lads today so any ill-effects from the groin injury he suffered in Burnley’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat against Huddersfield appears to be minimal. The striker was replaced at half-time.

Newcastle’s push to land a center-back this week appears to have come up short. There’s no movement on our pursuit of Diego Carlos or Benoit Badiashile. Sevilla are reluctant to sell their defender while Monaco want upwards of £50m for Badiashile.

There has also been no reported progress in talks for Hugo Ekitike. Newcastle were reportedly close to a deal to bring the 19-year-old prodigy to Tyneside. The striker missed Reims’ 0-0 stalemate at Clermont Foot on Sunday due to a red card suspension.

A couple of midfielders have hit the headlines today. The Manchester Evening News is reporting that Donny van de Beek’s representatives have sounded out both Newcastle and Dortmund over their interest in the Dutchman. On Wednesday, Luke Edwards reported that both Van de Beek and former-Magpie Giorginio Wijnaldum have come up in discussions on Tyneside.

At the moment, Manchester United are unwilling to sanction an exit for van de Beek while Wijnaldum has been linked with Arsenal. Both would be excellent loan signings but will probably not move until late in the window, if at all.

On Wednesday, The Mail reported that Newcastle were interested in RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara. However, the 23-year-old’s £33m release clause is not active until the summer.

There is another report today that Newcastle may try to land the box to box midfielder in this window. If Newcastle can convince Leipzig to sell the Mali international for a reasonable fee in January, this could be one to watch in the coming weeks.

For many, the focus is narrowing in on the six-pointer against Watford. Newcastle are desperate for three points and could climb out of the bottom three with a victory.

Hearing Gillespie could start in goal tomorrow.

Might be why we are looking at GK’s

Is Lewis fit? Seen him in training pictures would be a massive boost

Gillespie? Can he be any worse than darlow or dubravka at the moment? Both give me nightmares

My squad was neglected for a couple of GWs between Christmas \ New Year when I was suffering with the V.

I should have applied to the EPL for postponements.

Lewis will make a big difference. I don’t think our CDs are as bad as people make out. For most the season they’ve had very poor protection from the sides (Murphy, Ritchie) and very poor protection from the front (Shelvey etc). If you play in defence and nobody is helping you, you get pulled all over and look terrible.

Not sure why we are haggling over a couple of million for Etikite and letting PSG get in there. Thought that was the benefit of super rich owners. After all its less than we’re paying for Wood and this kid could be the real deal for years to come..

Be a bit of a risk playing Gillespie in a crucial game when he’s not played for so long? When was his last game for us?

Saying that though Dubravka and Darlow have both been poor so may as well give Gillespie a chance to make his claim.

It would actually be nice to see as well if Gillespie got the nod. Would show Howe isn’t afraid to drop players if they’re performing poorly, not having favourites etc.

Wor B – Kinda gotta agree with Jail on that being a poor excuse! 😉

Especially when you can lie in bed, sick as a dog, and make changes on the app on your phone…

Saying that, it’s easy to make the wrong transfers, just because you’re not keeping on top of the latest news on who is playing or not playing, then you up up with 4 or 5 players who aren’t getting many minutes and you’re playing catch up…

Adamn_92 – Both. Media is going crazy linking us to targets but I’m sure the club is casting its net far and wide to look for players. But the media (and some fans) often treat it like it’s Football Manager…player has good stats so sign him up! Club has to want to sell, player has to want to come, player has to fit into the team and the project, and the right deal has to be struck.

No point in Eddie heightening expectations more than they already are. Better to set them a bit lower and maybe exceed them than set them high and disappoint people.

Who is suggesting they’re going to start Gillespie against Watford?? That would be a HUGE call and seems very unlikely to me unless Dubravka and Darlow are both struggling with fitness. Also doesn’t say much for Woodman, unless he’s also struggling.

Yeah I thought it might be a bit of both too. Howe probably trying to keep cards close to his chest to avoid other clubs getting involved or any leaks. I still feel like we may be after a few players not mentioned anywhere. Also with our new found rich owners this window was always going to be easy for media to throw out any names they feel like and link us with them.

Probably the hardest window to know what’s got some truth in it or not. We could be linked with anyone due to our new owners. Easiest job in football at the moment is to be working in media and report on Newcastle this transfer window. Can just have a hat full of players names and pull one out and say we’re interested.

Reports Darlow has you know what, Dubravka a toe injury suffered at Cambridge and Woodman didn’t look that confident or capable when he stepped in. So would make sense to have a more experienced head in Gillespie I suppose. Everyone else has had a chance and not impressed so far.

Lewis and Dummet still not fit for the game tomorrow. I can’t stand seeing Ritchie playong there and giving the opposition acres pf space to get in behind. He’s terrible at LB and shouldn’t be risked there.

Adamn_92 – Oh, 100% there will be players we’re after that haven’t found their way into the media. In a way, the number of players we’re linked for provides a smokescreen for what is going on behind the scenes, as players we’re genuinely after can slip under the radar.

Who knows how long we were actually going after Wood…then he suddenly turned up as a link and it was virtually done.

Newcastle are currently the most interesting club in European football in terms of this transfer window.

He honestly can’t be any worse than the mistakes we’ve seen from Dubravka, Darlow and the lack of presence/confidence we saw from Woodman. It’s not confirmed 100% if Dubravka is out or if Gillespie gets the nod anyway.

Also I feel like we might see Manquillo left back and Trippier right back. Already seen Manquillo play left back this season and may even see Ritchie pushed up on the wing to provide crosses for Wood. Ritchie was most used as a right midfielder for Howe at Bournemouth, so could see him play there to supply ammunition for Wood.

at this point Id say that we are full for Watford, no more newbies. Anyway, I dont think Eddie will put them in as he is quite exacting. Like benitez, but doesnt annoy the players after a while and believes in attacking football. And completely unlike Bruce who just relied on camaraderie and ASM.

What has happened to our Ekitike deal? We were apparently very close to an agreement in price and all of a sudden it’s gone extremely quiet. Sevilla will want much more than £30m for Carlos and I feel as we’ll be wasting our precious time with them as they will continue to play hardball like Lille with Botman. We need reinforcements immediately but who can we get??
