Howe Believes Desperation For Three Points Led To Cautious Second Half

Newcastle failed again to pick up three points in a pivotal match against a relegation rival. The performance ultimately left a lot to be desired as the lads managed just one shot on target.

Allan Saint-Maximin again provided a moment of magic early in the second half. Though the winger’s overall performance was up and down. After his terrific goal, Watford wrestled control of the match and found a late winner through Joao Pedro.

Newcastle have now lost 21 points from winning positions. That is a recipe for relegation that has to be addressed very quickly. The inability to create or put away chances and keep clean sheets has had Newcastle on the ropes all season long.

After the match, Eddie Howe spoke of his disappointment in not getting the victory. Here is a tweet from The Shields Gazette’s Miles Starforth on Howe’s post-match comments.

Newcastle took their foot off the gas after the breakthrough. Watford immediately mounted their charge back into the match. While the equalizer came very late, it was coming for about 30 minutes.

Howe believes the lack of winning has bred a cautious mentality into the group. After taking the lead, the players were desperate to hold on rather than push for a second goal to put the match away.

Here is some more of what Howe said per Miles Starforth:

“I think the players were so desperate to win that they went into a little bit of protection mode, and didn’t want to take too many risks. That brings the opposition into the game, and Watford had their best period.”

Newcastle are running out of chances to pick up the wins necessary for survival. We’ve now won just once in 20 matches (22 including the two cups). The chance to climb out of the relegation places today was not seized.

Norwich defeated Everton 2-1 this afternoon pushing them above us in the table. The point keeps us in 19th while Burnley, who have three matches in hand, drop to the bottom after having another match postponed.

As of now, it is a four-team race to 17th between Burnley, Newcastle, Norwich, and Watford. Though Everton and Leeds are only 7 points above us and could be dragged back if they don’t pick up some more wins over the next few weeks.

Same problems as last week can’t defend. Shelvey a liability and Lacelles has lost all focus as a CB. We need defenders.

Today we tried to win 1-0 but our back line and CDM is pony.

Another nail in the coffin. Not sure it’s possible to stay up. 1 win in 20. Garbage again.

(Gonna have to win multiple games in a row but we simply don’t)

No Eddie you got the substitution wrong.
Five minutes left and you’re think g let’s have Miggy on the break forward to put them under pressure.
    Wrong move.
Watford were breaking at speed or trying to chip over our defence
What was needed was a defensive player to help stop that threat.

    Looked like a Bruce substitution.

Rob – with respect you/we don’t know who was in fact approached for the job . Its the same with all the 129 or so players we have allegedly been interested in. Sadly apart from Trippier all FAKE NEWS. The Chelsea guy who allegedly went to Saudi to be interviewed for the DOF job seemed a nailed on certainty but sadly nothing came of it.
It would seem so far as NUFC is concerned. All the Money in Saudi Arabia will not buy us success at least not this season.

Maybe slightly generous on these ratings

Dubravka 7, improved and more assured performance
Trippier 7, can see his quality
Lascelles 5, gifts the opposition the ball far too often.
Schar 7, maybe generous but thought he was decent
Dummett 7, good first performance back
Fraser 5, started well then seemed to disappear
Longstaff 6, OK but needs to do more
Shelvey 6, seemed to be a bit off the pace
Joelinton 7,motm again for me, worked hard and it’s a shame other don’t put in a shift like that
Saint-Maximin 7, only because of the goal, seemed quiet for most of the game
Wood 6, ok debut, didn’t get any service at all second half though

Wood had no service whatsoever – don’t blame him.
Maxi did one thing right in the entire game.
Should have played Ritchie right wing to get some crosses in.
We need points not pretty football even if we could play pretty football.
Two good centre backs required and creative mid fielder.
    Get the Dutchman from Manure.

I think the priorities are clear now

Centre back and new central midfielder are essential.

Then another striker, a pacey one to offer something different to Wood.

    Then ideally another centre back.

Left back and keeper can wait until the summer.

Min of 3 more needed this transfer window, cb, dm/cm and st.

After that performance you’d imagine that teb Saudi’s will be saying ok if they want 80m for both Carlos and Botman, pay it and so they should. I’d sell Lascelles back to Forest as he is not a PL player. Always loved the guys determination and grit just like Ritchie , however that is not enough. I hope I so not see Lascelles near the team and stripped of his captaincy, give it to Trippier. I want to see Dummet playing in the back 4 until we get the new CB in (hopefully CB’s). We are absolutely crying out for a Kante or tiote style CM. I hope Shelvey is gone also this window get shot if them, new players and new start. This needs actioned before Leeds hopefully and then the 2 week break can be used to bed the new players in more.

I don’t want to see Eddie getting pelters just yet. Let’s see how he goes with players that are championship standard at best and bruced this past 2 years

It’s not over yet,but I must admit after today it is getting very close.

I wonder if those people who said we’re not in a relegation battle until the end of the season will see if differently now? You don’t need to be in the last few games to be in a battle to go down. It can happen as early as this and it is happening to us right now.

If we can’t make some quality signings and have them hit the ground running then we’re in big, big trouble.

Four points lost means we need two wins just to put that right before we play catch up

Not going to blame Eddie, he’s working with damaged goods right now. If he has the right players available then I think he could turn things around. We need someone to protect the two CBs and someone else to get the ball up the pitch and create a threat/feed our strikers. 2CB, 1CDM and a CAM at least.

Howe is telling us what went wrong but did phook all about it during the game.
I cannot believe how easy a ride he is getting. Bruce was rightly pilloried. But Eddie is actually doing worse. We will have to hope the Sheik buys him a team. Eddie is clueless at closing out a game. Check out his defensive stats. Always in bottom 3

What worries me the most is that Howe prefers Shelvey, Longstaff and Lascelles to; Willock, Almiron, Fernandez?, Dummet at CB. I dunno man but I am so downhearted after that last gasp goal for Watford and constantly seeing the away fans celebrating st St James’.

So sick of this shower of shite every week!

Don’t play Lacelles, Shelvey or Miggy again.Poor managing today. Maybe there are too many “cooks” as the expression goes. I still like Eddie but he has to have a plan B and stop being defensive. I thought I was going to be able to watch the whole game this afternoon but sadly it will be tough just to watch the highlights.

Play 4 in midfield as its 2 players looking after each other in pairs, three doesn’t work leaves space when one gets isolated

    If that makes sense.
