Are Newcastle Laying The Groundwork For Superb Summer Signing?

With Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett very close to returning from their respective injuries, left-back may not represent a massive need in this window. However, multiple reports claim a full-back opposite to Kieran Trippier is on the agenda this month.

Lucas Digne was an early target though the player had other ideas and ended up with Stephen Gerrard at Villa Park. The French international didn’t fancy a move to Newcastle for whatever reason.

There is a report out of Italy that Newcastle may be attempting a marquee signing at left-back. TuttoMercatoWeb is reporting that Newcastle have offered personal terms to Atalanta wing-back Robin Gosens which would more than double his earnings to £57k/week.

According to Salary Sport, the 27-year-old is on only £22,000 per week which seems awfully low for a player of his stature in the game. Gosens is one of the better attacking left-sided players in Italy and is a critical component in Gian Piero Gasperini’s 3-4-3 system.

Newcastle’s approach to Gosens could be laying the groundwork for a summer transfer. Gosens is currently out with a hamstring injury. He’s been sidelined since late September suffering a setback in November.

The report also seems to indicate that talks have not started between the two clubs. Atalanta will not want to lose the productive Gosens, who has 29 goals and 21 assists since joining the club from Heracles in 2017 for a pittance of less than £1m.

Gosens broke into the German national team in September of 2020 and has since collected 13 caps, including 4 starts in Euro 2020. He will likely cost quite a bit, though as evidenced by his low current wages, has had some contract issues recently.

Atalanta triggered an option to extend his contract to 2023 over the summer. After this season, he’ll enter the final year of his contract likely looking for a massive payday that Atalanta (with a 21,000 capacity stadium) may not be able to match.

Atalanta has risen to become one of Italy’s more successful clubs under Gasperini having made the Champions League in the last three seasons. They are currently fourth in Serie A, 3 points with a game in hand over fifth-placed Juventus.

Getting Gosens in, should we survive, would be brilliant. Though he generally plays further forward as a wing-back while Howe has settled into a back four at Newcastle. With his contract running down, Newcastle may be able to get an outstanding deal in the summer.

“I just want to see laws applied the same way to a world class sportsman as a normal, average person. Either he should be deported or they change the legal precedent and therefore the law. But I don’t like to see people getting preferential treatment just because they’re rich and famous.”

he is being discriminated against because he is famous. the doubles player was allowed in because she isn’t famous.

Not fond of Sean Longstaff starting. We are crying our for good midfielders in this window.

Why don’t we go for Matthius Pereira that is currently playing in Saudi Arabia!? I bet if we make an offer they’ll hve to accept lol

Bring Cantwell in as well he would be a massive upgrade on what we have and will come good under Howe no doubt.

A good solid team…but not one that oozes the required quick transitional play I think we’ll need.

Maybe Howe’s going for solidity then chase them in the 2nd half…

Who knows?…just seems a bit samey from the Cambridge game…and we don’t want that surely?

    Me nerves are shot!
