Newcastle Put In Bid For German U21 International Defender

Newcastle are continuing their work in this month’s transfer market and now there is a report that we have bid £21M for German U21 International center-back Felix Uduokhai.

The report is in Tuttomercatoweb and we have now been interested in several center-backs in this window, none of which we have been able to sign – yet.

The report is that Newcastle have been in contact with Augsburg in the last 24 hours and have bid €25M – around £20.8M for the left-footed center-back..

Napoli are also interested, but wait for it – Augsburg want to keep Uduokhai until the summer, but money talks.

The 24-year-old 6ft 4ins (according to Wikipedia) defender has a Nigerian father and German mother.

He has played 62 times for Augsburg with one goal since signing for them from Wolfsburg in 2020, after being on loan in the previous season.

He has played 6 times for the German U21 side and for the German Olympic side last year.

He cost Augsburg a reported €9M (£7.5M) so that would be a quick profit of €16M for the German club.

It’s a pity our former owner wasn’t Augsburg’s current owner – then the deal would go through lightning fast.

There is information on the Bundesliga website as reported by the Boot Room :

“There are very few left-footed center-backs at the highest level right now, and so Uduokhai is a rare gem in that sense,”

“The Augsburg defender has also played at left-back and in defensive midfield during his career already, but his home is in the center of defense.”

“Comfortable with both feet, the 23-year-old lines up on the left side of Augsburg’s central pairing to get the best use of his preferred foot.”

“That’s his key comparison to Bayern Munich’s Alaba, as well as his comfort in playing out from the back.”

“What makes Uduokhai a little different is that he stands 6’2?, making him a real presence at the back and at the other end of the pitch with his size and aerial ability.”

If we can get him for around £20M that would be a very decent deal.

What do you think?

Micky @4 that team has so much potential for good service into the box for Wood. Plenty of width. I think that’s tbe way Eddie will go today, play with width.

I think we have a Wood brace incoming today, I’d put money on it if I was a gambling man.

Agree with TDG on the comments about grammar. If you’re a journalist or you’re writing official work emails, you better get your grammar right to make sure you’re understood and look professional, on this blog though it doesn’t really matter. Some grammar mistakes are typos, others are incorrect autocorrects, and others maybe the person is just lazy, dyslexic, or doesn’t know. It’s poor form to pull someone up on grammar unless it’s absolutely horrific and unintelligible.

clinath – I do for sure. Every day the journos link us to a new player and most of them are just made up.

Every one of the centre halves we’re linked with would improve our squad so I don’t care too much which one. I don’t have the time to look at every one of these players we’re linked with, I’ll just wait until we actually sign someone.

“his visa was reinstated by a judge, who ordered his release, ruling that border officials ignored correct procedure when he arrived.

But on Friday evening, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke once again cancelled Djokovic’s visa under separate powers in Australia’s Migration Act.

The act allows him to deport anyone he deems a potential risk to “the health, safety or good order of the Australian community”.

NY Mag my strong view is because the government are trying to score political points even though he hasn’t broken any rules.

Jane – he has broken rules.
1 – his immigration form was incorrectly filled out claiming he wasn’t in any other country for the last 15 days. He was in Spain. He blamed it on someone in his team or with Tennis Australia (I forget which).
2 – he applied for the visa on the basis of an exemption and was required to provide evidence of his valid exemption upon entering the country. He could not provide this evidence so his visa was cancelled.

The problem with number 2 is that the Australian law requires immigration officials to grant the person a certain amount of time to produce this evidence before the visa is officially cancelled. Someone in immigration jumped the gun and cancelled it early, therefore the cancellation was invalid and the judge had to rule Djokovic was freed. You have to have good lawyers to find that loophole…

Jane – the big problem here is the disconnect between the Australian government, Tennis Australia, the Australian state the tournament is in (Victoria?), and Djokovic’s team. He was treated the same as you or I would be but for such a high profile person, they should have done a bit more digging into what exemption he was claiming. That way they could have informed him BEFORE he travelled that a recent infection was not a valid exemption under Australian immigration law and he would not be granted a visa.

They have turned it into a PR mess for all parties and it shouldn’t have been. I do also wonder if they’ve tried to embarrass him and make an example but they’ve embarrassed themselves at the same time.
