Dummett, Lascelles, And Wood Start Against Watford

Here is the team Eddie Howe has named for today’s pivotal match against Watford. It has three changes from last weekend’s FA Cup defeat with a debut for Chris Wood and Paul Dummett’s return.

Howe has both new signings in the starting eleven in what again appears to be a 4-3-3. Paul Dummett comes in at left-back with Matt Ritchie making way.

The bench is without Dwight Gayle, Jeff Hendrick, or Ciaran Clark though Jamal Lewis returns to the matchday squad. Young Elliot Anderson makes the bench once again.

This is who Claudio Ranieri has named for the visitors with former Magpie Moussa Sissoko as captain.

Newcastle have a golden opportunity to climb out of the relegation places with a win today. They’ve been in short supply with just one in this campaign.

Watford are struggling with seven straight defeats and missing some key players. It’s getting close to now or never and Newcastle need to start winning these types of matches.

Very happy with that starting line up. Also seeing Ranieri has made 6 changes could work in our favour. Watford may not have a great understanding in the team with that many changes.

With Joelinton and Wood on the pitch, we have 2 players who can hold the ball up, receive it in tight tricky areas and link play well. Should be able to retain possession pretty well in theory.

Love the line up. Still got a few decent players on the bench that some would be happy to see starting. Delighted to see Dummett back, delighted to see Dubravka fit to start, and delighted to see our two new signings start too.

That looks a team with a lot more balance maybe our most balanced team of the season?

Dummett just has to stay back let ASM do his thing so we don’t get caught out

Happy enough with that line up, apart from Longstaff. This lad keep getting his chance to shine but fails miserably.
Over to you Longstaff, pull your socks up.

Not fond of Sean Longstaff starting. We are crying our for good midfielders in this window.

Why don’t we go for Matthius Pereira that is currently playing in Saudi Arabia!? I bet if we make an offer they’ll have to accept lol

Bring Cantwell in as well he would be a massive upgrade on what we have and will come good under Howe no doubt.

Longstaff has to start producing some form because has contributed nowt in recent games.

It’s a good job Jo is in midfield otherwise we’d have no player there with any physical or aggressive presence. Problem is he’ll be wide left when what we really need is some tackling bite in CM. If Hayden was fit I’d be a lot more confident.

    This isn’t a must win game…

It’s an absolutely cannot lose or draw game.

    We HAVE to win.

It’s really is odd how people think Dummett is any less of a liability that Richie, the grass is always greener on the other side for most Toon fans.

A player could play brutal for months they beg for Richie to play, player ges injured Richie comes back in they don’t see Dummett for months and all of a sudden he’s way better than other players. It happens all the time lol.

He will probably put in a worldie now that I’ve said this lol, but at same time I not expecting miracles from Dummett or for him to be an upgrade for that matter.

Longstaff must be impressing Howe more than Willock but both have potential. Really need to see Fraser provide some attacking threat and Schar not screw up. Those are the two weak points in that line up for me, and the 2 positions I most want us to sign someone.

Ritchie has been at fault for countless goals this season. Dummett is a more solid defender. Always has been. That’s why people are pleased to see him back and for Ritchie to lose out.

Murphy should be starting. He was our best player last game, yet Howe has dropped him because he played well in favour of Fraser.

Hopefully Sisulko will get some stick and be grumpy and uninterested. Looks like height and strength preferred in the starting 11 and a handful of pacey players on the bench

BTW I’m OK with Dummett playing, he might surprise us and put in a worldie like he did 3 years ago against city, but he’s definitely not an upgrade in any shape or form, imo

I can’t say I remember that to be honest. I remember him always being pretty solid defensively. Doesn’t offer anything going forward, but solid defensively. Far far far better defensively than Ritchie regardless which is the most important thing.

These stats show the players by numbers, quite interesting as some don’t or can’t see it on the pitch.

Dummet is anything fancy, but will put his all in and is fairly dependable at leftback. We’ve seen him keep the likes of Salah quiet in the past. Despite not being known for it pace he also was clocked as one of fastest sprinters in the league one year. That was a while back though!

Hoping Allan st max is less trying to take the entire opposition on by himself. If he gets good crosses from the left into wood, hopefully wood can score a brace. Crosses from the right from trippier isn’t a concern. HWTL

Jane – They have so many privileges due to their fame and wealth already. They often use both for preferential treatment so I’m delighted to see the rules applied fairly to them. Just think of how some other powerful people have been abusing their positions and it’s about time that stopped.

Anyway…I think that’s enough on that topic and suggest we focus on the match. 🙂

It isn’t just in defending against his wide man that Dummett is an improvement over Ritchie, he is also a massive improvement for corners and free kicks into the box because of his heading ability.

We’ve conceded 42 goals already and a good slice of that has been down to not playing FB’s in FB positions.

I keep saying, Howe’s attempts at playing wing backs might have produced more attractive play but it hasn’t produced results.

This team is as good as it gets for now with players in their best positions.

I think it’s more than just the players on the pitch, i feel there is a bit of a feel good factor and that the the result last week was the kick the needed.
Anyway fingers crossed for a great result. And out of the bottom 3
