It’s been a frustrating week for Newcastle in the transfer market, with nobody coming in since Chris Wood was brought in about 8 days ago from Burnley for a cool £25M.
There were times when it looked like Seville’s Brazilian center-back Diego Carlos would come in, but it seems that Newcastle are being priced out of getting him by the Spanish club, who don’t want him to leave this month.
From what we have seen and heard of Carlos, he would be a fantastic signing for us and would surely help Newcastle retain our Premier League status.
Eddie Howe, as usual, is to the point when he was questioned this morning about what’s going on in the transfer window.
“It’s been frustrating in the transfer market.”
“We know we are against a deadline and we’re desperately trying to improve the squad.
“We’re working very hard behind the scenes.”
“It has been a fruitless search this week.”
“I think there is a difficult combination this January.”
“When you add Covid to the mix and a reluctance from clubs to lose players just in case there’s an outbreak at their club, you add that to the mix.”
“January is already notoriously difficult to bring in the right players.”
“I am sure the takeover has elevated people’s expectations on what Newcastle can pay other clubs.”
“It’s been frustrating in the transfer market.”
“We know we are against a deadline and we’re desperately trying to improve the squad.
“We’re working very hard behind the scenes.
We sympathize with the new owners and with Eddie Howe, but if they don’t pay out the money for players like Carlos, the players we have are not good enough, and we could be a Championship club in the summer.
That’s the stark reality facing the owners and Howe in the next 11 days.
We fear the game tomorrow at Leeds United: and another defeat would be a disaster for the club, before the squad flies off to Saudi Arabia for warm-weather training.

Comment #3CLINT – saw it. And you’re right. Just depends if he feels he has unfinished business in the CL. Hopefully he’s the kind of player who just wants to play lots and be loved by the fans. He can be a bit part elsewhere or a legend here. Would be an easy choice for me.

Comment #7check – as much as they can get I’d imagine! Don’t blame them either, as we’d do exactly the same.

If those medicals are still going begging I could really do with taking one of the appointments.
My right shoulder is giving me serious grief, losing 30 yards off my drive!
Give the Nuffield a bell and let them know I’ll be along this afternoon please.
If Carlos and Lingard are in the queue they’ll just have to wait.

Comment #9Oh…a couple of days ago, I was questioning the last time we loaned a player out to another PL club. You see the top clubs do it every season and it’s an indication of how many quality young players they have when they can excel at another PL club further down the table (think of Gallagher and Gilmore this season, plus others).
So…I saw we’d loaned out Krul, Jonas, and HBA towards the end of their careers with us but none were loaned out as any sort of prospect. Going back (much) further, we loaned out a 23 year old Lua Lua to Portsmouth and he bloody well scored against us! I think that was going back over 15 years so it’s been a hell of a long time since we’ve loaned out prospects to other PL clubs.
I’d love it when we’ve got 19/20 year olds in the U21/23 squad that we can loan out to a team in the bottom half of the PL because they’re not quite good enough to play for us regularly.

Comment #10Wor B – another golfer? What do you play off? I started playing a couple of years ago. Progress disrupted by lockdowns but playing as often as I can these days. 8.52am tee time tomorrow.

Comment #12Wasn`t this Ekitike fella going to be one for the future, what happened to him?
Looks like we are facing Leeds with who we have available so if Lascelles isn`t on the ball, and Shelvey plays it`s a loss imo,
I think most fans had a feeling it was only a matter of time before Leeds kicked on and they looked brilliant against West Ham, who are a good side.
We on the other hand don`t look as though we could bribe a win atm, i think Leeds will be comfortable on Saturday.
My heart hopes for 3-1 Toon, my head says 3-1 Leeds.

I’ve been a casual golfer for years playing without a handicap. Took early retirement in September and now looking to join seniors section as well as playing weekend club competitions this year. I’ll have to submit 3 cards to get a handicap, hopefully get 36 but probably 18 🙂

Comment #15If we ‘play’ shelvey v leeds, the game will just bypass him, he won’t keep up.
They mive the ball, fast.
Our mf is either slow as molasses or a minefield.

Comment #16Been ill, these last few days, so not sure if anyone as posted this.
Re this transfer window. Does anybody else think there is , a collective delaying tactic?
It seems that every transfer we pursue, is dragged out , until we are “very close ” to signing , then they either up the price or pull out.
All the time the transfer window is drawing to a close. Making it harder or nearly impossible to sign the players we need or want.
That’s why , I think the mancs, are stringing us along and the Lingard transfer won’t happen.

Comment #17We are facing Leeds with Tripps because Wood is a swap for Wilson who will be out for most of season.
1 win in 22. Will a full back make that much difference.?

Comment #19Stop making exercises for the “poor” owners. They only bid 30m for any players. Don’t fool us by saying we had been priced out. They jolly well knew that this was not a time to be penny wise because we will be relegated if no decent players had been added to the squad. Having brought in a cheap manager shown their ambitions from the start, now the results started to show! You paid peanuts to get monkeys!

Comment #21Don’t pay extra for good players so don’t expect to be in the Premiership next time round.
It’s as simple as that.
If the PIF don’t push the boat out by the end of this window we’ll be marooned in the Championship harbour by the end of the season.
Lascelles and Schar versus Rafinha, Harrison and co. at the weekend? Frightening.
If I were Howe I’d be exerting EXTREME pressure on the owners to get new players in or he may not be here much longer.
