Three Magpies Make Alan Shearer’s Team Of The Week

In what has been a rare occurrence this season, some Newcastle players have been named to Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week. Shearer has not been bashful with his Newcastle ties as he selects three Magpies in Martin Dubravka, Fabian Schar, and Jonjo Shelvey.

This is just the third week that a Newcastle player has managed to make Alan’s team. Allan Saint-Maximin was selected for the home fixture against Leeds in September. Jamaal Lascelles made it for our only other win of this campaign against Burnley early last month.

Dubravka, Schar, and Shelvey deserve some recognition for their performances in the 1-0 win at Leeds on Saturday. There are some other candidates as well as Kieran Trippier was simply outstanding.

Dubravka made some key saves in keeping just our second clean sheet of the season. He was helped by the warrior-like display of Fabian Schar. The 30-year-old was brilliant with 9 clearances, 2 interceptions, and 2 blocked shots.

Jonjo Shelvey put in a massive shift in the midfield. It was an important display from the playmaker as Joelinton was forced off in the first half with a groin injury. In addition to his goal, Shelvey had 2 tackles, 2 clearances, and a blocked shot in a complete performance.

By the way. Surprised that more is not being said on here about the turnstile issues in the away end at Leeds. Many fans didn’t get into the ground until 3.25. Scandalous.

I hope the club is still pursuing Ekitike.

I was reading some interesting stats — I am comparing Ekitike to Mbappe this season — and keep in mind Ekitike plays for Reims who are 14th in the table, whereas Mbappe plays for the league runaway leaders.

    Ekitike:
    Played: 18 games.
Goals per 90 minutes: 0.75. (2nd best in the league).
    Total shots: 19.
    Goal conversion: 42%
Shot accuracy: 74% (3rd best in the league).

    Mbappe:
    Played: 20 games.
    Goals per 90 minutes: 0.53.
    Total shots: 63
    Goal conversion: 16%.
    Shot accuracy: 49%

I haven’t seen Ekitike play… but those stats are staggering for a 19 year old at a struggling club.

Dream window would be Diego Carlos, Jesee Lingard and Bissouma and Zapata…I think this would be enough for us to stay up, then in the summer we would have much better position for business.

It’s nice that this will be over in 7 days. I wish I could avoid reading all of these rumored links and bids, but it’s impossible.

I’m kind of jaded with all the many twitter and news reports. I like the Athletic but by the times it comes to the BBC and even Skysports (even Saint Romano of twitter) it often feels like old news…

So what sources to people rate?

    onmeedsun; I heard that.

I was in the ground shockingly early for a number of reasons, but could see there was a problem. Once in Leeds should be straight in. Nowhere really to go pre match and it’s not the best of locations. Don’t like going there and that goes back a few fair number of years, though to be fair the match atmosphere is normally great. Less so outside, I’ve had issues retrieving the car more than once. Back on the M621 as soon as possible and out. With 3 points in the bag all the better

Police cars revolving light€55m is crazy money. But Diego Carlos has been brilliant this season, it’s a huge pull to bring him from a title competing team to a relegation fighting team in England. As I’ve said this deal SHOULD ( opinion ) be accepted, Hourglass with flowing sand. #nufc #newcastle

I’m utterly shocked us and many other Premier League teams have been linked with Adam Hložek at Sparta Prague, 19 years old, can play anywhere across the front and at No. 10, scores goal buts it’s his assists and creativity more than anything, big tough lad with pace just looks built for the Prem, he’s even worn the Captains Arm band a few times for them, think the only team I’ve seen his name linked to is West Ham, but they do love those Eastern European lads.

Also, on Ekitike, watched him against PSG the other night, Reims got beat 4-0 but he was by far their best player, his movement around the box was excellent, you could just tell he was lacking better players around him, personally think we can forget about him, if PSG lose Mbappe and Icardi this summer as reported I’d be shocked not to see them pick him up and I have no doubt his agent will know teams above our level are sniffing around.

I don`t think relegation is an option for the PIF, i think it would be the biggest humiliation for them, so this window might still hold some surprises but they are certainly taking their time about it.
Things need to move, and quick, ok , i am impatient, but there are only 7 days of this window left.
Come on, lets get things moving now.

I was one of the fans stuck outside never got in until 3 25 when they decided to open the gate as only 1 turnstile working.
The fans considering the turmoil behaved well. I am getting on in age and I thank the fans who helped myself to my seat.
The police outside did absolutely nothing could easily been a major incident

You know, the more I think about this potential Alli deal the more I’m sold on it, he was fantastic under Poch and lets be honest he isn’t the first and won’t be the last player to have had a falling out with Jose and I don’t think he’s ever recovered from that, everyone is different some players bounce back from that type of thing and others don’t (just look at Luke Shaw), and I think that really comes down to Managers and people around him, I think he needs the type of manager who can put his arm around him and show him some love and motivation, which lets be honest since Poch left Spurs haven’t had that type of Manager.

On loan I’d personally risk it, 25 years old, world cup year, maybe the lad has something to prove?

I think PIF are probably deciding what each target is worth and giving the green light to some as we speak.

There’s a lot of “face” involved in this venture for the Saudis and they will not tolerate relegation as an acceptable outcome for this season, so wait for a few “fireworks” in coming days.

I’m sure they’d stick with us if we went down but would hate the amount of laughing at them they would have to endure, and will do whatever it takes to try and avoid it. 🙂

Just watched the full 90mins and despite knowing the result I was still out of breath and exhausted at the end. What an end to end match! Realistically could have gone either way, but our chances were the better ones and if a couple of guys had their shooting boots on we should have maybe scored 4. Their approach play was blistering but they had nothing and no one on the end of it all.

    Great stuff, still happy! 🙂

Just listening to a podcast while hoovering the back garden. They were saying that Man U would probably take £4M for Lingard rather than let him go for free. They’re missing the point. He doesn’t have to go anywhere, he’s under contract and this is obviously a stumbling block. It could easily be solved by giving them a hefty loan fee and he doesn’t have to commit himself past June. I think what’s holding this up is Lingard waiting for better opportunities.
