Newcastle may be determined to land a left-back this window despite having plenty of options in Jamal Lewis, Paul Dummett, Javier Manquillo, and Matt Ritchie. There is news coming out of Italy that Newcastle are considering two other options in the wake of Mitchel Bakker’s collapsed move.
Here is a tweet from Sky Italy’s Rudi Galetti naming Sassuolo’s Rogerio and Atalanta’s Robin Gosens as options. He also claims that Bakker was not convinced of joining Newcastle despite an agreement being reached with Leverkusen.
?? #NUFC left-back, despite the agreement in principle with #BayerLeverkusen, #Bakker is not yet convinced of the destination.
? #Magpies are considering other options: some doubts on #Gosens injury conditions, #Newcastle are already in talks with #Sassuolo for #Rogerio. ?? pic.twitter.com/8sk55FuLMk

Gosens hit the headlines on the day of the Watford draw when Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claimed Newcastle had offered to more than double the German’s salary. That report, however, revealed that contact had not yet been made between the clubs.
The 27-year-old is still sidelined with a hamstring injury and has missed the past four months. As Galetti indicates, that is a cause for concern. He has just 18 months left on his deal and could be hoping for an exit this month.
The Rogerio link is an interesting one as Newcastle were very close to signing the Brazilian in September of 2020. However, Steve Bruce convinced Mike Ashley to spend that little extra for Jamal Lewis.
The 24-year-old has continued as Sassuolo’s starting left-back making 115 appearances since joining from Juventus in 2017, initially on a two-year loan. He would be a decent signing but not of the caliber of Gosens, who would be a statement-type of addition.
Rogerio is a very solid player who is excellent defensively. However, he is not the threat Gosens is down the left flank. He struggles with his final ball and has just 5 assists over the past five seasons, albeit in a more conservative system than Atalanta’s.

I’d don’t understand the ‘first’ thing (is it a Twitter thing or something?) but you were unlucky there.
Maybe next time.

Let face it, nobody has a clue what is boing on. we might have 2 or 3 lined up this week , then again we might be genuinely struggling to bring players in.
We will find out in 7 days time.

Comment #12Very impressed with Comoros today. Starting with a left back in goal and having a player sent off in the first ten minutes and only losing 2-1 to Cameroon. What a game they had. Their players should be proud of themselves 🙂

Comment #13DayvanCowboy – it’s a general problem with journalism and not limited to football either. The more extreme articles get the attention, regardless of whether they are true or not. The balanced articles don’t get much attention at all. Try to write a balanced article about this club and it won’t get too much attention. Write an article about how we’ll be spending £250m a year, signing Haaland and qualify for the CL and it will get a lot more hits. Similarly if you wrote an article that we’re getting relegated, Howe is out of his depth and the PIF don’t know how to run a football club…again, loads of hits.
I’d be fighting a losing battle trying to convince everyone to stop clicking on clickbait for the instant emotional response…the clickbait is designed to do exactly that and it’s very enticing…

Comment #16If Ben Jacobs is right and Lingard is happy to come then no brainer, get him on a loan. So he wants the option to choose what he wants at end of season. Fair enough, he performs and we stay up then the consortium will give him a very good offer no doubt. If he doesn’t we move on.
It’s worth the risk of the hefty loan fee I suppose. I also think that Manure would be quite happy to knock us back and lose out on 10 million or whatever to see us go down.
