It’s true to say that the Newcastle owners would have expected more players signed by today – the first day of warm-weather training in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia
We have two good players who have already been signed – Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, both of whom played well in the 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Saturday.
21-year-old Dutch U21 left-back Michael Bakker, at Bayer Leverkusen, could be our next signing, with the German club ready to sell, and we have bid 14.5M, which is close to the 16M, Bayern Leverkusen want, according to the Mail.
And we are reported to be back in for Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard for a loan deal, according to Fabrizio Romano:
Newcastle will push again on Jesse Lingard deal in the next hours. Magpies board working hard to sign Jesse at least until the end of the season, then he'll become a free agent. ?? #NUFC

We may have finally given up on Seville center-back Diego Carlos, but we need to bring at least one center-back in during the next 7 days.
At the very least we need a center-back, a central midfielder, and a striker.
Former Chronicle reporter Chris Waugh has reported this morning in the Athletic, and this is a small extract from his long article:
“In truth, Newcastle are behind where they intended to be at this stage of the window. Most frustratingly, center-back — the priority position — has still to be strengthened. Alongside two new central defenders, they would ideally like to end January having also recruited a left-back, a holding midfielder, an attacking midfielder and another forward.”
“It is understood Newcastle have long lists for all positions and will potentially send out dozens of enquiries now that clubs are more likely to be open to dispensing with fringe squad members, given the growing proximity to the end of the window.”
The time has come for Newcastle to start moving down their list of candidates and start signing players.
For instance, if we cannot get Lingard in, a decent alternative is Spurs’ Deli Alli, and remember Spurs pipped us to his signing back in January 2015, when he was at Milton Keynes Dons.
And the England International wants to come to Newcastle to resurrect his career – he would no doubt be a popular signing for Newcastle fans, as long as he is willing to fight in a Newcastle shirt.
There’s also good news that we will soon sign Atalanta Columbian striker Duván Zapata, and he would be another very good signing.
Finally, for a midfielder maybe we can sign Aaron Ramsey from Juventus, as long as he is willing to take a big pay cut to arrive on Tyneside.
Just 7 days to go in this transfer window, and we still have to sign 3/4 players to significantly strengthen the side.

What do you think?

Comment #11A big week coming up for us, but I have faith that we can get it done – an LB seems almost certain at this point in Bakker, Lingard seems promising, Alli seems possible, and I still think Carlos will come in.
Zapata talk seems to have tapered off though.

Comment #16New Zealand have selected Newcastle striker Chris Wood in their squad for a pair of friendly matches:
Fri 28.01.2022 Jordan (n) Abu Dhabi
Tue 01.02.2022 Uzbekistan (n) Dubai
Those two games act as warm-ups for the Oceania World Cup qualifying tournament, staged in Qatar from March 18th to 30th.

That’s fair. I do believe we can get deals done this week. But the clock is ticking and that’s concerning. To state the obvious, we’d all prefer if the deals were already done ?

With players from other leagues we can literally treble their wages, that’s not possible with established PL stars. Even Digne wouldn’t have been worth doubling or even a 50% raise when he’s already on £120K pw.

My memory isn’t too great with recalling comments, might be the impact of the Carling over the years. Most popular lager in Britain though, none of that posh stuff!
The takeover was out the blue and we all got properly excited. Which we fully deserved to be after the previous owner’s shenanigans.
But we knew getting players to come was going to be a tricky business. The likes of Lingard will be thinking, I’ll go to the toon till end of season for a few quid and they’ll probably ditch me if they stay up. Can’t see him going to WC if we’re in the champo. Folk forget the WC is in late November this year. He has to go somewhere though if he has any WC ambition at all.
Think we’d get more from Lingard than Alli.

Conor Coady – Salary & Contract
Conor Coady earns £62,000 per week, £3,224,000 per year playing for Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. as a D C. Conor Coady’s net worth is £15,360,800. Conor Coady is 28 years old and was born in England. His current contract expires June 30, 2025.
So even if we offered him £100K pw, he’s worth £15M and has one last chance at playing in a WC finals, he might give that up if you trebled his wage the way we can Botman or Carlos but is it worth or even anywhere near sensible to offer him £186K pw, even doubling his wage could be seen as daft.
