There is a certain positivity with Newcastle fans after the fighting 1-0 win at Leeds on Saturday.
That is even though we had another stone-cold penalty disallowed in the second by both referee and VAR, when Allan Saint-Maximun was tripped in the penalty box.
It was a clear foul when Leeds’s Robin Koch took Allan Saint-Maximin’s feet away.
But nothing was given by the referee now VAR (Kevin Fiend).
But VAR was ridiculously kind to Liverpool in a letter game when Diogo Jota purposefully bumped himself into Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the area.
And then The Portuguese International went falling down dramatically, something he must practice in training every day?
These regular non-penalty decisions against Newcastle suggest referees are against us, something that will be very difficult to prove of course, but we already know the Premier League is corrupt.
So what’s new?
The latest Newcastle non-decision for a penalty has been ridiculed by various correspondents.
Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy said this:
“This is a penalty. I don’t know how he’s missed it.”
“Thankfully for Newcastle it wasn’t relevant to the final score, but you see the touch there and they’ve missed it.
“I can’t really give you any explanation. It’s just one of those ridiculous decisions.”
Tim Sherwood had this to say about the incident:
“I think [Newcastle] should have had a penalty.”
“Saint-Maximin goes in, he’s one-v-one, he’s attacking, he decides to cut back onto his right foot, the defender (Koch) misses the ball and hits his foot. He just drags it and makes contact in the penalty area.
“For me, that’s a penalty. Chris Kavanagh doesn’t give the penalty. Obviously, VAR looked at it and check complete, no penalty in their opinion.”
“If he would have given it on-field, they certainly wouldn’t have overturned it.”
And Jeff Stelling was also amazed at the decision:
“We could all see it was a penalty. We could all see there was contact.
“Goodness knows what the VAR was looking at there, it’s Kevin Friend.”
We know that Kevin Friend is no friend of Newcastle’s.
So there are three opinions from non-Newcastle affiliated commentators.
Newcastle should write to the referees association – the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) – and ask for an explanation on why a penalty wasn’t given.
And there needs to be more transparency with these stupid VAR decisions which are turning games, and give referees even more power on the results of games in the Premier League.
VAR has been a huge negative in the game, and they were meant to be only for obvious referee errors.
Not that a player is offside by 1 cm, so a goal is disallowed, which is what we have seen far too many times.
Not to mentions some stupid penalty decisions, like the one we saw in Newcastle’s last game.

Comment #3Toon fans bad – Considering we’ve just added a couple of good quality players, have a decent manager and we’re still right in the mix to stay up, you really think we have no chance if we make no new signings? I’m definitely of the mindset that we have a decent chance of staying up even with no new signings but I also think we’ll make at least 2 more and stay up with a few games to spare.
Burnley have done it before but they can’t keep doing it the way they have.

Comment #4How many bad calls recently?
How goals(potentially) have we mussed out on?
…and not just us.
How many dodgy ones for the likes if cfc, lfc etc?
It’s cost us and ithers games, points and goal difference.

Comment #13VAR in PL is being used as a device to keep top clubs up at the top. How often do the “top 4” benefit from VAR results. It is statistically insane. If someone is sad enough on this board to collate how many VARS go for and against each team, I would be interested to see.

Comment #15VAR well it’s as well the non penalty didn’t loose us more points.
Liverpool yesterday, 2nd goal clearly offside, 3rd goal well just laughable. The standard of refereeing is ridiculous.
In this mini window we must get in 3 minimum and 4 or 5 ideally, get them to Saudi with the squad and build. We have a decent chance of staying up but drastic actions are needed, ok we may pay through the teeth but let’s get it done.

Comment #16I think Burnley are likely to be able to grind out draws like last night but in the games that they think they can win might come into trouble as it leaves them wide open
Personally not really worried about our relegation rivals we just have to do the business and its out of their hands
If we can get 4 points in the next 2 games we could be in a great position to kick on

Comment #18Just been reading one of our targets is Memphis Depay of Barca? Apparently we’re offering £30M, which Barca would love to take, but Athletico are offering the player CL Football, so he doesn’t want to come here. According to the same column were back in for Diego Carlos with a new bid, as well as in negotiations with PSG for Keylor Navas.

Comment #28It’s not even Var that seems to go against us pretty much any 50/50 we seem to rarely get the benefit of the doubt
ASM was clearly fouled a few mins before the penalty and got a yellow card for complaining I actually think this also made the referees mind up when it came to the penalty

Comment #29VAR decisions in 2020/21 doesn’t reflect any top 6 bias at all: https://www.espn.co.uk/football/english-premier-league/story/4182135/how-var-decisions-affected-every-premier-league-club-in-2020-21 with Arsenal and Liverpool jointly the most negatively affected teams.
This season https://www.espn.co.uk/football/english-premier-league/story/4452736/how-var-decisions-have-affected-every-premier-league-club-in-2021-22 the top 5 teams are all going for CL places and we are rock bottom.
I don’t believe in any deliberate conspiracy or agenda, I just think we’ve been unlucky this season. In 2019/20, the decisions favoured us: https://www.espn.co.uk/football/english-premier-league/story/3929823/how-var-decisions-have-affected-every-premier-league-club apparently there wasn’t a single decision overturned against us all season.

To be fair, that baby crying on the floor antic surely contributes to some judgements against ASM. Referees hate these players.

Comment #33VAR and the refs certainly don’t like us, lost count of the number of decisions we’ve not been given this season. Meanwhile Liverpool get penalties they shouldn’t!
Will make it a little bit sweeter when we stay up, then push on up the league next season.

True although they don’t seem to mind when Salah or Ronaldo etc are hitting the deck after the slightest of touches some of the penalties they have had have been sickening
Although it was nice to see Kane denied a goal for “fouling” Silva !!

Comment #35PGMOL aren’t going to change VAR until it is proven unequivocally to be corrupt.
It would be Turkeys voting for Christmas
VAR gives them:
more jobs for the boys
A faceless entity to hide behind when making errors
The ability to hid from big decisions
Support and takes the blame when they both cock it up
Add in the fact that the referees and those running don’t seem to see any errors (nothing so blond as those who won’t look), then Until it is proven to be at fault by a 3rd party, and most likely taken to court due to causing relegation etc this isn’t going to change unfortunately.
My query would be how come Jota won a penalty despite not having control of the ball when the self same reason was quotes when Fraser was poleaxed a few games ago. Why the variance in rules? This isn’t a difference in interpretation of rules but very much different rules being applied.

Maybe there’s some favoritism. Just that’s been the case all along, the more you compliant the more the referee not gonna give you. I’m more concern the inconsistency of the VAR. One day there will be mass protest if this carries on, since everyone will be affected by these bad decision at least once.
