Newcastle are still waiting on an answer from Manchester United over a loan move for Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard. Of the three deals that looked promising just a day ago, this one appears to be the only one with life left in it.
Spanish journalist Guillem Balague is reporting that negotiations have ended with Sevilla for Diego Carlos. Balague believes Newcastle never came close to reaching Sevilla’s €60m valuation.
Sevilla considers the negotiations with #NUFC have broken down about Diego Carlos. It's over, they say https://t.co/mzx11I6rvD

The news doesn’t get much brighter on left-back target Robin Gosens. After Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker reportedly turned down Newcastle on Monday, there is a report from Italy that the 27-year-old has rejected a more lucrative offer to push for a move to Inter Milan.
Newcastle must now turn to other targets. A loan move for Liverpool’s Nat Phillips is reportedly being considered while former target Rogerio has also surfaced as an alternative to both Bakker and Gosens.
The Sun’s Alan Nixon is claiming Newcastle have made an enquiry for Brighton’s Adam Webster. However, there is little chance the 27-year-old would not cost considerably more than the £30m Newcastle were looking to pay for top targets Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.
Newcastle. Surprise late inquiry for centre half Adam Webster at Brighton. Right age ? Prem experience ? Price would be big all the same ?
— Alan Nixon (@reluctantnicko) January 25, 2022
This one appears to be dead in the water barring Newcastle just going all in and splashing the cash for the center-back. Webster cost The Seagulls over £20m when he joined from Ipswich in 2019. He signed an extension to 2026 in August.
This window has lived up to its merciless reputation. While there is still time left for agreements to be reached for alternative targets, the disappointment over recent developments cannot be denied.

Comment #2Sevilla really have some serious history of this, they also have serious history of selling a player at an inflated price, said player than has a poor season or 2 and then they sign them back for fraction of the original sale cost, if they are making it difficult and moving the goal posts for me it’s best to walk away.

Comment #7It’s fine having a few deals going to the wire, but we need at least 2 in the bag before then, as we have to be prepared to walk away from last minute deals, and selling clubs will know we’re desperate if we have no further signings between now and 31st.

Comment #9There’s so many quality CBs with 6 months left that have had barely a peep said about them this window.
Got to think they’ve indicated they’re leaving end of season on a free no matter what.

It’s been like that the whole way through the window mate. On the flip side of what you say it’s the last chance of the selling club getting any money for a unhappy player.

I’d give it a 4/10

Comment #12If Carlos doesn’t get his move, can’t see him tearing up La Liga over next 6 months and his value will plummet.
Sevilla could shoot themselves in foot over this one.
I’d actually like that to happen as it sends a brilliant message to all clubs – “if Newcastle come calling with a reasonable price, do deal or risk losing player for much less”.
Doesn’t help us in this window, but for future it’s a wake up call to all the b’stds out there!

Comment #13Even if a player is out of contract in the summer, many clubs won’t want to let them go as they’d then have to get a replacement in. If they’re competing for Europe or to avoid relegation, they don’t want to mess around with that usually.
Add to that fact that the player knows he can get huge wages in the summer, and it’s tricky.
January transfer windows are always tricky.

I did expect more by now but always knew how notoriously difficult the January window is and we aren’t looking for the odd player we are going for top quality additions and that’s proved more difficult than expected

Comment #18If anyone has been anything of Levi Colwell at Huddersfield, they’ll know what a great left footed CB prospect he is at 18. Sadly, another one of the many young players that Chelsea have nabbed and tied down to a long contract. An England player for the future. Would have loved us to get him.

Comment #19SholaShow – 6/10 so far for me. Not excellent but it’s where I expected us to be. If we sign the 2 more I expect by Monday, I’ll give it an 8/10. Sign an extra one and 9/10.

Comment #20SholaShow, most players who are of that calibre know that they are in for a pay day at the end of their contract in 6 months, they’ll get big wages and a signing on fee at their next club, if we were in a better league position right now I wouldn’t be surprised if we’d be one of those clubs offering pre-contracts to some of these out of contract players, but right now they aren’t going to move due to the money involved come the summer.

I’m sure we could offer a player the massive pay day he’d get on a free, however that means commiting himself to us and the risk of championship football.

Comment #27Gotta say that I 100% agree with Jail on this point Mund. Anyone who believed that this January transfer window wasn’t going to be this difficult was just deceiving themselves. All of the historical evidence pointed to it being a very challenging window and there was no reason to believe it would be anything different, unless looking at it through heavily tinted black and white glasses.

Comment #28Not surprised at this window at all, clubs don’t want to sell unless well over odds , they would need to find replacements and window closes in a week – wouldn’t be surprised if we get nobody else this window – even though we desperately need a CB and mid ( especially with big Joe and Lascelles out of action)

Comment #29Jail – and we’d also have to offer the club loads of money too. That’s one thing for a proven PL performer like Lingard who probably also wants to stay in this country, another thing entirely when getting someone from another league.

Even the owners expected more to be done by now in the window. They have worked tirelessly to bring reinforcements in and if they had it there way they would have a few more at least in by now. Nobody saw the selling clubs keep raising the bar when what was deemed acceptable hit the negotiating table.
Considering I’ve been saying how difficult January is that obviously says I know it’s a tough window as it’s always been.
Nobody in here has ran a football club or knows what it involves so it’s just an opinion

Comment #34Going from being close to signing Diego Carlos for nearly £40m to trying to sign Nat Phillips on loan within a few hours is about as Newcastle United as it gets.
Fair play to our owners for not being held to ransom by Sevilla but it’s still disappointing that Carlos isn’t joining us.
Looks like it’s gonna be a last minute panic delve into the loan market for Phillips and Choudury.

There is no chance of Lingard signing on a permanent deal without a clause, that is my opinion and I’ll stick by it, I’ve said from the beginning that loan deals are our best chance of getting such a player.

Comment #39A top CB and CM would put us on a 7/10 for me.
We’ve known we’ve needed both since the new owners came into the club.
We especially need them now given all our injury issues.
Right now we play 3 CMs and have Shelvey, Longstaff, Willock and Hendrick available.
Another ST is then probably the next priority because Gayle is clearly unwanted and we do everything to not play him, for whatever reason. So we really only have Wood to make it through February until Wilson returns to fitness. So a bit of holding breath there if we don’t get another.
Lingard would be nice, same for a LB, but they’re not vital.

Comment #40Keep hoping RM will sign Mbappe and that will get Sevilla to see the light. It s wishful thinking tho. I wouldn’t think we need to be too particular about loan players and options to sign. Its a redo this summer in any case. Rentals should be fine.
