After suggestions of progress on multiple fronts yesterday, today has been an altogether different story. There have been multiple reports claiming that Newcastle’s long pursuit of Sevilla’s Diego Carlos has come to an unceremonious end.
Sevilla will not budge from their high valuation of the 28-year-old forcing Newcastle to scramble for alternative targets. Sky Sports is reporting that Carlos has rejected Sevilla’s conciliatory offer of a new contract. It appears the player is not pleased with being denied this move.
Newcastle have money to spend and there are reports of parallel moves for Liverpool’s Nat Phillips and Sassuolo’s left-back Rogerio, an alternative to Robin Gosens. Newcastle are seeking an initial loan for Phillips while Rogerio would command around £15m.
That leaves more money for other areas. Sport Witness is citing a claim from France’s L’Equipe that Newcastle have made an initial approach for Lyon defensive midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The 24-year-old is currently away on international duty with Brazil.
Guimaraes joined Lyon from Brazil’s Athletico in the winter window of 2020 for around £15m. This report claims Newcastle have made an offer of £34m and would quadruple the midfielder’s wages.
Sport Witness also cited a report from Brazil’s Globo Esporto that Lyon have accepted the offer and it is down to the player to agree to the move.
There could be nothing in these claims though Eddie Howe appears to covet an additional midfielder. It was reported yesterday the club have increased efforts to sign Aaron Ramsey from Juventus.
With money not being dished out on the likes of Sven Botman or Diego Carlos, maybe an ambitious move to add to the midfield has now been given the green light.
Interestingly, Guimaraes’s representatives are Bertolucci Sports, who pushed extremely hard to win a move to Newcastle for Diego Carlos. They have refused to comment on the latest link to one of their clients
Guimaraes has been strongly linked with Arsenal in this window. He said the following about The Gunners’ interest in him a few weeks ago:
“Arsenal approached my agent, but there was no offer. My aim, and I made it clear to Juninho, is to win a title with Lyon.
“The fans have not had one for a long time. We have the Coupe de France, the Europa League, and the league.
“It is difficult with the level that PSG are at, but anything can happen.
“My aim is to win a title here, but I have never hidden my desire to play in the Premier League.”

Never one to shoot anyone else’s stories down as we all have different sources. However this is not the information I have I’m afraid.

#NUFC have submitted a bid for Bruno Guimaraes, as per reports in France. He’s become their top midfield target.
Lyon yet to accept but offer believed to be close to asking price.
Another ambitious one, this.

Comment #59I think the journos like to highlight our deals and put a negative slant on them because they don’t like us. They want things to go south. Hopefully, we’ll do okay and can gloat after the window us shut.

When contacted, Bruno Guimarães’ entourage are refusing to comment on whether or not their client would be interested in a move to Newcastle, which may be good news for the Magpies in of itself – Lyon also refusing to comment on their intentions re: the €40m bid.

Comment #64It does make me wonder the game Journos play, clearly they are measured on clicks, views etc. How much do they make stuff up to look more ITK than they are?
It can’t be hard to work out that someone like Vlahovic was a non starter due to wanting champs league.
Easy to spin stuff if they are wrong too… “player had change of heart due to wages on offer” “club now willing to talk as others not come forward with offers”
Most business will be done behind closed doors

Comment #65When we opened negotiations with Seville for Carlos they were in CL but apparently a bit dodgy re debts and FPL.
Since then, they’ve dropped out of CL (serious loss of income) + just added Martial to payroll on £250k per week!!
I think they’ll come back and snap our hands off when they realise they aren’t getting a better offer. Plus player wants to come. They’ve no moves left. They’d be mad to keep him to smell out the dressing room and possibly lose value as he ages and plays with less enthusiasm.
still think he’ll come.

Comment #66Howe has stated they are only going for players who are a marked upgrade on existing staff and will make significant improvements to team.
No point in chasing people who are only marginally better.
Good thinking really, despite the obvious problems.

Comment #67It’s absolutely vital we sign 2 or 3 payers who can immediately improve us, on top of the 2 we already have (hurrah!), so all NUFC fans are bound to be fanatically interested in the Jan window, the only chance we have of survival (no thanks, those who are happy to contemplate the ultimate failure of another relegation). But PLEASE don’t pass your verdict on the transfer window until the transfer window is finished (this happens so regularly). That’s all.

Comment #71Anyone else thinking this transfer window was going to be so fun and exciting, no matter who we got? I was looking forward to it for months, thinking I’d be on ssn and Twitter 24/7.
Only to realise its actually horrible and just puts you in a bad mood. I never thought I’d hate transfer windows as much as I have come to realise I actually do.
I just want the whole thing over and done with now, regardless.

Comment #79I won`t be shocked at all if the Lingard deal is off, it`s took him 3 weeks to make his mind up about whether he wants to join Nufc and has still sat on his hands even though he knows Manure don`t want him.
If he wanted to come he would of been here long before now.
I don`t want anyone wearing the shirt with a half arsed attitude, especially in our predicament.
Dodged the bullet there imo.
