We have to be very wary of some of the reports coming in about Newcastle wanting new players and that they are keen to come to Newcastle.
That was the reporting on Mitchel Bakker (I’ve stopped calling him Michael!), but when Newcastle and his club Bayer Leverkusen agreed terms – it turns out he doesn’t want to come to Newcastle.
That’s a pity because the player is everything we need – a talented left wing-back, a Dutch U21 International, and only 21 years old.
In defense, we do need a center-back and left-back brought in, but with Paul Dummett finally over his hamstring injury, and Jamal Lewis also fit again, we are fairly strong at left-back.
Especially when Javier Manquillo plays so well in either full-back position, and his Messi-type move at Leeds got us the free-kick from which Jonjo Shelvey scored the goal that got us a very precious 3 point.
Manquillo received many plaudits from our fans for his good play at Leeds.
But at center-back we are still vulnerable, although it was heartening to see our Swiss warrior Fabian Schar have such a fine game at Leeds United.
It’s getting to the point, with only 6 days left in the window, where Newcastle have to start bringing in a center-back, midfielder and striker – the best we can get in the circumstances.
We are still after Jesse Lingard, Diego Carlos (maybe?), Deli Alli, Duvan Zapata, and others, but all four are by no means certain to be signed by Newcastle this month.
Newcastle can wait until the last few days when players tend to become available, but that would be very risky and better to get the three players in asap, and we can still bring others in at the last moment if the chance arises.
We don’t yet have a strong enough squad to survive in the Premier League, but at least new players brought in should do it.
What do you think?
