Newcastle Still Need To Strengthen At Least These 3 Positions Over Next 6 Days

We have to be very wary of some of the reports coming in about Newcastle wanting new players and that they are keen to come to Newcastle.

That was the reporting on Mitchel Bakker (I’ve stopped calling him Michael!), but when Newcastle and his club Bayer Leverkusen agreed terms – it turns out he doesn’t want to come to Newcastle.

That’s a pity because the player is everything we need – a talented left wing-back, a Dutch U21 International, and only 21 years old.

In defense, we do need a center-back and left-back brought in, but with Paul Dummett finally over his hamstring injury, and Jamal Lewis also fit again, we are fairly strong at left-back.

Especially when Javier Manquillo plays so well in either full-back position, and his Messi-type move at Leeds got us the free-kick from which Jonjo Shelvey scored the goal that got us a very precious 3 point.

Manquillo received many plaudits from our fans for his good play at Leeds.

But at center-back we are still vulnerable, although it was heartening to see our Swiss warrior Fabian Schar have such a fine game at Leeds United.

It’s getting to the point, with only 6 days left in the window, where Newcastle have to start bringing in a center-back, midfielder and striker – the best we can get in the circumstances.

We are still after Jesse Lingard, Diego Carlos (maybe?), Deli Alli, Duvan Zapata, and others, but all four are by no means certain to be signed by Newcastle this month.

Newcastle can wait until the last few days when players tend to become available, but that would be very risky and better to get the three players in asap, and we can still bring others in at the last moment if the chance arises.

We don’t yet have a strong enough squad to survive in the Premier League, but at least new players brought in should do it.

What do you think?

Personal bugbear of mine…the overuse of the word “need” from football fans…

Weird that the UK press aren’t shouting about manure being in UAE on a training break.

    Tom,

On your link from previous, does Hendrick need a lift to Teesside?

The press aren’t going on about our trip either unless you’re actively looking for Toon news. Mainstream media have barely mentioned it and I’ve seen no negative news from them. Does make sense it’s reported though, considering the new owners are from the same country.

A goalkeeper and Hendrick have to be the top 2 on the list to be dropped from the 25 man squad from 1st Feb. Maybe Hayden too if his injury is season ending but hopefully it isn’t.

It’s only Holt and his endless sports washing narrative that I have seen mentioning it negatively. There’s a lot of non-NUFC fans that like to mention it too.

    Tom,
You should buy the new GTA OAP titled mean streets of Derby, you bust up illegal domino games, steal all the residents home brew kits and create betting rackets on the lawn bowls league 😀

dazzler – to be honest, I don’t give a stuff about Oliver Holt and his piece of crap, racist company that he works for. I don’t read his articles and never will.

As for other fans, it’s easy to find fans who will follow that narrative, perhaps because they read Holt’s articles, so I don’t really care what they think either.

Proper news reported that they are going and it’s for footballing reasons (including a friendly match) rather than a pure publicity stunt. Warm weather training with excellent facilities sounds perfectly sensible to me.

So by next Monday night all the proof will be in the pudding and all these links and hearsay will be confined to history. We’ll have the squad intact that we are going to go in to the nitty gritty business end of the season. It should hopefully be the last of any journo’s/ITK’s saying anything until at least we know what division we’re in. Then the fun begins again.

The proof is already there as we won’t be signing 50 players.

The fun began the day the takeover happened.

We have never had a January window like this before with being linked to so many good players and each window will only get better.

    Mund,
The proof is not already there as we only have two new players. We will have proof of who is signed no later than midnight on the 31st of January, that’s when the squad will be truly settled and the rumours are quashed.

I was given good advice years ago by someone who has since sadly passed, he would always say if you’ve got to force an issue or someone to do what you want it’s time to move on…square peg round hole….I would have lost a lot of money if I hadn’t taken his advice…..Lingard doesn’t want to come to us for the right reasons…that one’s best left alone

    Rumours never stop.

We have been linked to nearly a 100 players and that’s obvious to anyone with any sense that we won’t be signing them all.

Every single club has transfer rumours and it’s been that way for as long as I can remember.

Keep scanning Newsnow for transfer stories most of the day every day and the days just keep rolling by as we are ‘looking at..’, monitoring…’, ‘waiting for…’, ‘bidding for…’, keeping an eye on..’ while hearing constant stories of players turning us down, clubs not wanting to sell to us and other clubs trying to usurp our targets.
The only thing that will succeed is hard MONEY and if the PIF don’t start to flex their financial muscle shortly this next 6 days will just fly past and we’ll be looking forward to playing Peterborough, Luton and Barnsley next season (and possibly the Mackems).
Howe’s comments about managing with the current squad are also worrying.
There will NEVER be a better chance to kickstart the future of this club but I just have doubts whether 6 days will be enough.
