There are very encouraging details emerging on Newcastle’s pursuit of Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The 24-year-old has reportedly agreed to the move with a medical scheduled in his native Brazil. Discussions over personal terms are also planned in the near future.
As reported earlier, Lyon accepted Newcastle’s offer of just over £30m for the playmaker. The majority of local outlets are backing the claims that this move is heading in a very positive direction as is Fabrizio Romano.
Bruno Guimarães medical with Newcastle will take place once some final details are agreed/signed with agents and OL, and once Bruno’s back in Brazil [he’s now in Ecuador]. ?? #NUFC
All parties involved are still working to complete the deal soon, after meeting last night.
— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) January 26, 2022
Talk of a late move for Brighton’s Dan Burn is also gaining momentum. The 29-year-old was reported to be a potential target late last night. Football Insider is reporting that Newcastle are now in advanced talks over a £10m deal for the local man.
The 6’7″ defender is a Geordie and would likely jump at the chance of a move to Tyneside. This represents such a dream opportunity for Burn that Brighton may not have it in their hearts to block the move.
The fee being quoted represents a sizeable profit on a player entering the final 18-months of his contract. He also turns 30 before this season concludes. So this could be a transfer that benefits all parties as Burn is a solid player who will be joining for his love of the club.
The Telegraph has provided further details of Newcastle’s push for Jesse Lingard. There were reports late last night that the move was all but dead.
However, that may be jumping the gun a bit. Luke Edwards is reporting that the stumbling block is down solely to a sizeable bonus of £12m should Newcastle survive this season. The loan fee Manchester United are requiring is only £2.5m.
Newcastle rightly feel the survival bonus is extortionary while The Red Devils maintain it to be reasonable considering the high stakes in play. Relegation would prove a massive pitfall to Newcastle’s future plans.
Manchester United have knocked back approaches from West Ham, Tottenham, and Everton. They appear to only be willing to do business with Newcastle with the bonus remainingthe sole stumbling block.
A compromise may be able to be reached before the window closes on Monday. An obvious one is to increase the loan fee by a fee million while decreasing the bonus clause to around £2-3m.
Newcastle get their man for a slightly inflated loan price while Man U receive a decent fee for a player they lose for nothing in the summer. However, there appears to be a lot more at play than money on this one.

Make no mistake – that’s a incredible signing for Newcastle. Bruno Guimarães has everything to hit the ground running in the Premier League – he’s the complete package, thrives in big games. Definitely a top four signing. Hats off for them

Comment #14Looking at his highlight reel on YouTube, he looks like he can do it all, win the ball, bring it forward, retain possession pick a pass and has a wicked shot on him. Very promising.

Comment #15Can see the signing of Guimares being great for a negotiation tool. Clubs know we are desperate and think they can have us over a barrel but once players start coming that apparent desperation reduces and hence their ability to stick up the price. Puts us in a stronger position and I reckon one high quality signing will be the catalyst for 2/3 more with clubs worrying they will miss out as other clubs move to deal with us. It’s a question of which clubs blink first eg Lille or Seville

If #NUFC do end up getting Bruno Guimarães, it’s huge. Would provide a lot of what they need in midfield – athleticism, great on the ball, an organiser – and as effective in a team that doesn’t have much possession as one that does (#1 of short thread)
The message it sends is positive too, in convincing a player with status & options to come, who has always privileged the right sporting choice for his career (& yes, I realise the money will be good). He’s useful for #NUFC now & for where they hope they’ll be in the future
For Lyon, sad to lose such a good (& mature) player. The reality though is they’re skint (pandemic, missing out on Champions League, having a bad season) & once Juninho went their chances of extending his contract took a big hit

Comment #17Ok, so it smell good for Guimaraes as i said, but i m still worry.
1 first, the medical could happen only after the game against ecuador… wich leave plenty of time for a twist.
2 OL fans are upset, rarely seen that.
3 Still no official confirmation by OL.

Comment #18Burn now, pressure on Seville re Carlos!! Cave in for sensible price and we have a great left sided CB and a really good squad upgrade back up. Perfect.
Lille have to be watching and thinking Oh oh! – Botman re-evaluation on cards?
Things are beginning to look much better and I think Man U will cave on Lingard too.
So we’ll have the CDM we’ve been crying out for and a huge upgrade CAM too.
Things are getting exciting!! 😀

Comment #25Guimares takes a lot of pressure off of us in many areas, he provides cover for the back 4 which, when they have time, can organise themselves well like they did against Leeds. Guimares gives them that cover. He also injects pace and energy into a stagnant midfield that struggles to recycle or move the ball at pace. He also carries the ball well which drives us up the pitch and gets our attacking players in more ideal positions. Finally, he has a wicked pass on him, so ASM and Fraser running the channels knowing that a decent ball is on the way. Revolutionary signing for this team.
A new CB and an attacking player and I think we’ve enough to get it through to stay up, ideally we’d want a few more bodies in though.

Comment #31I’m just as excited as everyone else about this deal. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. The media have been conflicted on every single player we’ve been linked with, in terms of how close it is, fee agreed, personal terms agreed and all the rest. There’s conflicting reports about this one too, such as no agreement is in place yet and player hasn’t agreed to terms yet.
Be excited, I know I am! But just stay grounded until it’s finally signed off as journalists and the media have been all over the place with us so far this window.

Comment #36Dan Burn have been very consistent for Brighton, performing better than all Newcastle defenders for the past seasons in EPL. Dan Burn’s performance is consider good, since Brighton don’t really play defensively like Newcastle’s Bruce era.

Comment #37I do like that we are trying to sign Brazilian players they have a hard work ethic, technical ability and are not phased by the physical battle
They do usually cost a lot though!!
So if judging by the rumours
Trippier
Wood
Guimares
Rogerio
Burn
Lingard
That would represent an amazing window although if we got Carlos in as well…..
