Newcastle have renewed talks for Bayer Leverkusen left-back Mitchel Bakker according to French outlet L’Equipe, who broke the Bruno Guimaraes story last night.
They are reporting that Newcastle have offered £16.8m for the 21-year-old who only joined Leverkusen from PSG for half that amount this past summer. The Dutchman fell out of favor in Paris under Mauricio Pochettino but was a regular under current Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.
Earlier in the week, Luke Edwards revealed a source had told him Bakker would not be joining Newcastle in this window. It was later revealed by Sky Italy’s Rudy Galetti that the player ‘was not yet convinced of the destination.’
Leverkusen appear ready to accept the offer and the ball is in Bakker’s court. L’Equipe has added that his representatives are currently in Newcastle tying up a potential agreement. We’ll see if this second push has helped convince the Bakker.
The Mail’s Craig Hope is backing the claim that Newcastle have made another attempt for Bakker. He also reports Newcastle will make another run at Brighton’s Dan Burn after having an £8m bid rejected earlier.

NUFC legends team up for 2022 charity event in Gosforth
Four iconic former Newcastle United Football players are to come together for a special charity event at The Grand Hotel in Gosforth on Friday 8 April 2022. The event will reunite Kevin Keegan’s famous 90s “Entertainers” team, including former star midfielder Rob Lee, famed left-back John Beresford, former Northern Irish winger Keith Gillespie and the club’s legendary centre back and England international, Steve Howey. Featuring an auction, raffle and two-course meal, the charity event – organised by friends and NUFC nuts Les Hancock and Terry Sweeney – will be a smart-casual dinner event aimed at all supporters of the team.
Commenting on the event, John Beresford said: “I’m really looking forward to April 8th when myself, Keith Gillespie, Rob Lee and Steve Howey will head to Gosforth Park where we’re going to have a few reminisces and some entertainment to go with it. We’re going to be telling some funny stories; things you’ve probably never heard before. It’s going to be humorous, let’s put it that way! It’s all for two fantastic causes; Tiny Lives Trust and Wallsend Boys Club. I really can’t wait and I hope to see you there”
The evening is dedicated to the memory of Brian Paddison, a popular Newcastle businessman, charity fundraiser and passionate Newcastle United fan. All proceeds from the event are to go straight to Tiny Lives Trust and the legendary Wallsend Boys Club which has produced over 80 professional football players since its formation, including Alan Shearer, Alan Thompson, Steve Watson and Michael Carrick.
Tickets for the NUFC Legends Charity Evening are priced at £45 and can be purchased via email at lesnufc@yahoo.com or over the phone by contacting organisers Les Hancock on 07779 841293 or Terry Sweeney at 07968 126622.

Comment #14Mund – if nobody took it seriously, what’s the point of posting the link? And https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/dusan-vlahovic-fiorentina-newcastle-transfer-22668224 and https://www.nufcblog.com/2021/11/22/vlahovic/
I agree that not too many took it seriously but some did. Which is why I called them crazy optimists. I was putting you in the second category (with me).

Honestly mate I haven’t seen anyone being serious with going for the likes of Mbappe, might be the odd fruit loop 😉 but majority is what counts.
I get excited about all this but I’m always middle ground in my head. The moment you hear they are heading for a medical and you get to see pictures confirming this, it’s then that I get a proper buzz on and take it seriously.
We have just escaped purgatory when transfer windows were just like any other month for us toon fans, nothing to see, noting to get excited about as hope and expectation was robbed from us. Now with this new era we have kinda seen how mad this ride is going to be with the transformation of a January transfer window for us all as it’s been bonkers. I’d much rather this scenario than the previous one even tho it’s still as frustrating 😆 but in a good way.

Comment #21Bruno Guimaraes has told his agents he is ready to join Newcastle if they agree a fee with Lyon – as it stands, the €40m proposal, which Newcastle want to pay over 5 years in instalments, is deemed as insufficient. #nufc [L’Equipe]

Comment #22If we do get Bruno Guimaraes and Bakker, it takes all the pressure off needing to buy either of the two fruit cakes that are Ali and Jessie.
With 5 in the middle, you can have Bruno Guimaraes as your break up destroyer who just sits in front of defence all day, flanked by Willock/Shelvey and Joe, and your out wide players can be chosen from Fraser, Miggy, Murphy and ASM, with Wilson or Wood up top.
…so we don’t need a No 10 do we?

Comment #24Mund – Yeah, we’ve said the same thing about being optimistic and how much better things are. My comment was in relation to something someone else posted about the extremely negative people. They drive me nuts even more than the extremely positive people! I’d far rather read people dreaming about Vlahovic than doom and gloom about us “definitely getting relegated”.
By the way, you know how I can pick whether you’ve written a nice reply or spoiling for a fight? You only put “TDS” when it’s the former… 😉

Comment #25I must admit the price for this guy seems very reasonable and probably four out of the top 6 in the Premier could improve their team by buying him.
so whoever wrote this story has a point.

Comment #27Well, must say Lyon is right to say no if it need 5 years… for they desperatly need cash and they need it right now.
If it’s true, it also mean FFP is more of a concern for NUFC than expected.

Jan 26, 2022 at 5:40 PM
Comment #28If you read between the lines, it also imply the player will not go to war with Lyon to leave.
So, we they’re still in good position to negociate.

Not necessarily. It may just mean we are now conducting our business like most other clubs and trying to pay fee over the length of the contract

Yes in theory… in practice, Lyon will sell right now cause they need the cash immediatly and NUFC need the player immediatly.
So… If they agreed on the fee, to bargain with the delay seem strange in my opinion for that particular case.

The timing of the cash payments make no difference to FFP. FFP is affected by the transfer value and the length of contract. As PIF have loads of cash and most other clubs are cash strapped, us being able to offer more upfront cash should enable us to swing most deals in our favour.
