Comments from Sevilla’s Sporting Director today seems to have officially concluded Newcastle’s long pursuit of Diego Carlos. Monchi told i sport’s Mark Douglas that The Brazilian will not be leaving in this window despite Newcastle’s very respectable offer.
He left open the door for summer business at a similar price but the difficulties of finding a suitable replacement in the notoriously difficult January window ultimately forced him to turn Newcastle away multiple times.
The Magpies have now been forced to move on from both preferred center-back targets as a similar resistance was met from Lille for Sven Botman. The 22-year-old Dutchman is likely to be a summer target should Newcastle survive this campaign.
Newcastle may have turned their attention to another Brazilian center-back in Galatasaray’s Marcao. The player was previously linked by the Turkish press in the summer of 2020 when Newcastle were pushing to land Arsenal’s Rob Holding on loan.
TuttoMercatoWeb is reporting that Marcao is on Newcastle’s list of options now that the move for Diego Carlos has ended in defeat. The 25-year-old shares similar attributes to his countryman and is valued at a fraction of the price at £12.5m.
The ball-playing center-back can also push forward into a defensive midfield role. Interestingly, he is left-footed which is a characteristic Eddie Howe would like more options of at center-half.
Marcao moved to Galatasaray for £3.4m in January of 2019 from Portuguese club Chaves. He has since made over 120 appearances, including 24 this season. Like many Super Lig clubs, Galatasaray could be willing sellers.

Comment #4Said so a few days ago. Utterly stupid that the womens’ football teams often have the same name as the mens’. You see an article like Lindsey Horan signs for Lyon and how the hell are you supposed to be sure that’s a woman? Ok, most people called Lindsey are women but not all. What if their name is Sam or Pat?
I’ve as much interest in finding out who the womens’ version of Leicester City or Lyon signed as I have of the eSports version of those teams. None.

Police cars revolving light Newcastle are desperately trying to get 1 or 2 more players through the door before the window shuts. However, they may be forced to pay over the odds to get their targets.

Comment #12Another day passes without anyone through the door, is anyone else worried? We seem “close” with so many but nothing is happening. Personally I think we need a centre back, a left back, a defensive midfielder, a creative midfielder and a pacey striker, no chance of getting all of them but we need at least 3. Even the two we have brought in have took a few days too complete. If the window shuts with no1 else brought in we are in serious trouble!!

Comment #13TDG – I mean, they’ve either got to call a team Newcastle United Ladies/Womens etc, or just put the news in a different section as it doesn’t make sense for it to be in the same category. I know they’re trying to boost its popularity, and maybe lots of us would get behind a Toon womens’ team but it feels like it’s being pushed in places that it doesn’t belong.

I think we’re playing it right. Saville using the excuse it’s too late to sign anyone else, they’ve been trying to have our pants down in that time. They’ve probably got a replacement lined up and it could go to the wire.

Comment #15willynufc – No. Not worried. I expected it would go like this and I always thought we’d get 2+ signings in late. A centre back and a central midfielder (even on TDD) would mean we’ve had a good window in my opinion. Anything better than that is excellent. At this point, I don’t care if it’s Burn and Alli or Guimaraes and Carlos.

Police cars revolving light Newcastle United Blog stalwart Ashingtoon is also heartily sick of police car revolving lights. I think we’ve just discovered his Kryptonite! But seriously folks, don’t torture him with it! If we’re nice to him, he might bake us a Quiché.

Comment #246am wake up here in Australia, surprise surprise, not a thing again….acknowledge Jan is always tough but considering our predicament I 100% would have expected at least two more through the door by now, perfect opp to have them on Saudi with the lads and yet here we are faffing about still…it is not as though we didn’t know what Jan windows are like, no where near decisive or ruthless enough for mine. 2 wins for the season, 28 days gone, 1 decent singing, 1 average….3 days to go but this has been an epic fail so far

I don’t think they are faffing about at all, clubs are trying to hold out for as much money as they can and we’re calling their bluff, if we pull it off it’s lays down a precedent that we won’t have our pants pulled down. Man City should have told Villa to do one with £100M for Greslish as they did with Kane.

Comment #39And the EP and Richard Masters just keep rolling along
Formula 1 is planning a new race-management structure in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the problems at last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
There is widespread acceptance across the sport that race director Michael Masi failed to follow the rules correctly during a late safety-car period in the title-deciding race.
