Talks Progressing Well To Sign 22-Year-Old Striker – Report

Newcastle are closing in on three signings before Monday’s deadline day. Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes is all but a Magpie with the player undergoing a medical today in Brazil. He has also agreed to personal terms on a contract until 2026.

However, there are two more deals in the works on this Friday with a surprise name now in the mix. In an exclusive, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards is reporting that Newcastle are in pole position to land Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, whose contract runs out in the summer.

The 22-year-old forward, who scored a hat-trick against Sunderland in the League Cup late last month, has emerged as a top attacking target. This development comes as Newcastle’s hope of landing Jesse Lingard on loan appears to have been extinguished.

However, The Telegraph believe Newcastle have been quietly working on this deal since the beginning of the window. Though with Lingard now off the table, negotiations have seemingly been put into overdrive.

Edwards claims talks are progressing well and the young striker could head up to Tyneside over the weekend to complete a move. Crystal Palace reportedly had a bid turned down for the forward earlier in this window.

Newcastle are also expected to make a second run at Brighton’s Dan Burn. An opening bid of £8m was turned down. Newcastle will go in with an improved offer and as long as Brighton do not make ‘unrealistic demands’, an agreement is believed to be within reach.

Edwards seems to suspect that if Newcastle are successful in landing Nketiah and Burn that would wrap up this window with five signings in Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Eddie Nketiah, and Dan Burn.

That would represent a decent haul though the primary goal of significantly strengthening the position of center-back would not have been met. However, it is a notoriously difficult window and our new owners have been tireless in trying to get these signings over the line.

Nketiah and Dan Burn would be awful signings. Doesn’t matter is we bring in Guimaraes if the rest are trounce.

    Cleveleys, Jail, hibbit

Brazil do play on Wednesday night though and imagine he’ll still be with them. So earliest he is likely to travel to Newcastle would probably be Thursday. So not much time to settle in before Everton. I suspect he could be a sub who comes on at some stage. Depends if Howe feels he’s ready to go straight in, he won’t have worked on the tactics for the match all week like everyone else though.

Arsenal reject. 5 goals in 42 games as a striker? Not good enough.

Noooo!! Please don’t tell me our window ends with N’Ketiah on loan!

He’s a poor quality tap in merchant with a shoddy touch.

    Adamn_92,
Even if he got twenty minutes it would give the crowd a lift and he’d have a feel for the stadium and ready to go against Villa.

A few people seem to point towards Nketiah’s goal return. He played only 413 minutes last season in total in the league. He scored and got an assist so that’s a goal contribution every 100 minutes roughly. Some context has to come into play when you look at his appearances and goals side by side.

This Bakker transfer for me never added up in my head. We can be replacing everyone, amd its just not a position we are weak in or more to the point need to worry about for now. Lewis could be great still,.Manquillo can play there, Richie can play there and Dummet can play there.

Whereas CM,CB, AM/ST are areas we are woefully poor in. I will stick my neck out here and say we won’t be signing him and that this is media and we probably never as much as inquired about him.

whilst looking forward to the signing of bruno a cabeye plus…i see burns as a good cb that would slot straight in and a threat at both ends …lingard is another that wouldn,t need settling time…would love nketiah as well see him as a future andy cole. …fingers crossed.

I hope this Nketiah loan to the toon is wrong, why would we want the England under 21 captain at our club. Cannot see him being able to link up with Bruno or Trippier passes.
It would be a disaster if the toon went out in the summer and hoovered up the so-called creme de la creme youth from around the globe.

    Amanda, show some ambition babe!

Buzzing over Guimaraes, top quality player and I’m actually starting to accept it’s going to happen. Still won’t get too carried away till he’s officially announced but can’t deny it looks like a done deal. Not being negative like, just been hurt too many times lol.

As others have quite rightly stated, this is the key role we’ve lacked for too long. Diame and Tiote had success in the role for a short time, but this lad looks a lot better than either, it would absolutely be the signing of the window, one that massively improves us defensively AND in attack. Defenders have more time and less pressure, attackers have the confidence to make runs forward.

Howay, announce it already man, me nerves are shredded

I haven’t fully accepted its going to happen lol.

If it does I wonder did Nixon bring a Jersey along gor him to hold up considering it will be at least the 3rd of Feb until he’s at the Toon. Unless Brazil release him early which is unlikely considering we’ve flown across the world to bring him his contract.

If our owners have actually done what has been reported in France (put up earlier and last night by Niafron) that we (in advance) knowing how difficult this window would be have cast our net across the cream of European football, knowing that loads would be non starters, but that enough would find a way through – then it’s bordering on genius and we need to take our hats off to whoever came up with that idea.

We sat here in the early days moaning that we “seemed to be chasing everyone” and the way the window has shaped up that’s exactly what they were doing, and as it’s turning out it’s unquestionably been the right tactic.

It’s the football equivalent of shaking the apple tree and see what falls out, brilliant.

Could easily have identified just 5 targets spent all our time on them and got none in.

I’m made up with the way things are shaping up and still expect 2-3 more through the doors.
