Newcastle are closing in on three signings before Monday’s deadline day. Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes is all but a Magpie with the player undergoing a medical today in Brazil. He has also agreed to personal terms on a contract until 2026.
However, there are two more deals in the works on this Friday with a surprise name now in the mix. In an exclusive, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards is reporting that Newcastle are in pole position to land Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, whose contract runs out in the summer.
The 22-year-old forward, who scored a hat-trick against Sunderland in the League Cup late last month, has emerged as a top attacking target. This development comes as Newcastle’s hope of landing Jesse Lingard on loan appears to have been extinguished.
However, The Telegraph believe Newcastle have been quietly working on this deal since the beginning of the window. Though with Lingard now off the table, negotiations have seemingly been put into overdrive.
Edwards claims talks are progressing well and the young striker could head up to Tyneside over the weekend to complete a move. Crystal Palace reportedly had a bid turned down for the forward earlier in this window.
Newcastle are also expected to make a second run at Brighton’s Dan Burn. An opening bid of £8m was turned down. Newcastle will go in with an improved offer and as long as Brighton do not make ‘unrealistic demands’, an agreement is believed to be within reach.
Edwards seems to suspect that if Newcastle are successful in landing Nketiah and Burn that would wrap up this window with five signings in Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Eddie Nketiah, and Dan Burn.
That would represent a decent haul though the primary goal of significantly strengthening the position of center-back would not have been met. However, it is a notoriously difficult window and our new owners have been tireless in trying to get these signings over the line.

Comment #41He’s never going to the best in Europe (ASM) is he? but if he sticks around and, gets into the French squad, he’ll be well chuffed! 🙂

It’s a brilliant window and I agree they’ve been working for months on this with so much intel on players.
Now a loan signing for Nketiah and get Burn in, we are definitely going places.
This project is taking off and the goal is world club champions this decade!
There’s no limit for these guys!

Comment #43Slimani and Yedlin would be great signings in my opinion. Slimani is better and faster than Wood. I’d also have Santon, Abeid, Thauvin and Merino back.

The signing of this Brazilian Bruno is awesome, and i cant add to what has already been said about him, i said a few days ago the priority should be fixing the obvious weakness which our midfield, and this lad goes a long way to addressing that problem, i predicted we would sign 4 quality players in this window although i personally think we need 5. This has already been a very successful window, but it would be of the reactor scale if we signed another midfielder and a central defender. We are moving from the takeover to the overtaker, soon it will be the undertaker for the slimy so called big six. 😀 😀 😀 HWTL

Comment #48Moon, I agree, this has been well researched and seemingly from before they knew about the TO. They’ve just gone into overdrive and said let’s see who we can get, and it ain’t over yet!
I’ll be gobsmacked and disappointed in equal measure if Botman or Carlos don’t materialise, but hey ho we’ll have enough and there’s always the Summer. 😀
Isn’t it great being able to talk like this after 14 years of dross filled windows of doom? 🙂

Comment #50We also have to be mindful of our homegrown quota as well so we can’t just fill the squad full of Brazillians and be job done haha
Nketiah is an upgrade on Gayle he is young and can get better as we grow he could either really develop or become a good 3rd choice
Burn is an upgrade on pretty much all of our centre backs this season so if he replaced say Clark then that’s an upgrade on current form
Then Trippier and Bruno provide the top quality
Wood also a solid signing
If I am greedy I wouldn’t mind another left back and an attacking midfielder!!!

Comment #66Niafron, you’re absolutely correct. You can have all the money in the world, but it’s no guarantee that you can get everything you want, for a whole variety of reasons. And we’ve found this out during this window.
Under immensely difficult circumstances the owners look like they’ve pulled a massive coup!
After early worries, I’m getting genuinely over excited at this point.
By Monday night we’ll be on Cloud Nine. 😀
Then there’s just the small matter of getting enough wins to really start the revolution in June. 🙂 😀

Comment #72I wanted Nketiah at the start of the window. He’d be a great signing but after seeing links to Ekitike, Zapata, Osimhen etc I would prefer them to him. Guess I am being greedy now lol I’ll be happy with either tbh. Things have really accelerated regarding our transfers now. Great to see.

Comment #74I’d start Nketiah ahead of Wood. He’s better on the ball and dropping off to link up with the midfield. Something ASM is crying out for. Plus would probably get just as many goals if not more.

I’d like to see Guimaraes and Shelvey deep. I think Shelvey would benefit by someone beside him with the brain to snuff out the danger. And after his Performance vs Leeds I’d like to see Willock in front of them 2. I do think the Lingard deal will be done on DD at a massively reduced price. So him and ASM out wide.

Jan 28, 2022 at 3:52 PM
Comment #78I think Shelvey and Bruno would be quite a pairing. Bruno makes up for Shelvey’s lack of defensive capabilities and would allow him more space to hurt teams with his vision and passing which we know he’s extremely capable of. Combined with the fact that Bruno is just as dangerous carrying the ball and creating.
