Newcastle are closing in on three signings before Monday’s deadline day. Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes is all but a Magpie with the player undergoing a medical today in Brazil. He has also agreed to personal terms on a contract until 2026.
However, there are two more deals in the works on this Friday with a surprise name now in the mix. In an exclusive, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards is reporting that Newcastle are in pole position to land Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, whose contract runs out in the summer.
The 22-year-old forward, who scored a hat-trick against Sunderland in the League Cup late last month, has emerged as a top attacking target. This development comes as Newcastle’s hope of landing Jesse Lingard on loan appears to have been extinguished.
However, The Telegraph believe Newcastle have been quietly working on this deal since the beginning of the window. Though with Lingard now off the table, negotiations have seemingly been put into overdrive.
Edwards claims talks are progressing well and the young striker could head up to Tyneside over the weekend to complete a move. Crystal Palace reportedly had a bid turned down for the forward earlier in this window.
Newcastle are also expected to make a second run at Brighton’s Dan Burn. An opening bid of £8m was turned down. Newcastle will go in with an improved offer and as long as Brighton do not make ‘unrealistic demands’, an agreement is believed to be within reach.
Edwards seems to suspect that if Newcastle are successful in landing Nketiah and Burn that would wrap up this window with five signings in Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Eddie Nketiah, and Dan Burn.
That would represent a decent haul though the primary goal of significantly strengthening the position of center-back would not have been met. However, it is a notoriously difficult window and our new owners have been tireless in trying to get these signings over the line.

Comment #122I thought it was self explanatory that you don’t have to sell players, just makes financial sense to either sell who definitely hasn’t got a future and loan out those that might have.

Comment #127It’s easy saying just sell but what if nobody wants to buy?
If we can’t sell just de-register and release them from there contracts come the summer
The quicker the deadwood is gone the better

Comment #128Please make an official statement on Bruno soon! It is probably all fine, but im scared that someone suddenly puts in a late bid for him and steal him right in front if our nose.

Three reasons:
1 Saving money.
2 Keeping coherent squads, wether it is the first team or the reserve ( which also need room for young players ).
3 Having too much players is generaly difficult to handle in a human perspective. These guys are professionnal top level football players, they got big egos, you must give them time and attention.
So this is not absolute mandatory ( you got many others priorities ), but it’s part of an efficient management of the club.

Comment #130Yes Mund, that’s what they’d have to do if it came to the crunch, but I don’t think it takes a mathematical genius or an accountant to work out that it’s better to try and sell them first in some capacity rather than have them on pay waiting for their contracts to be paid up, some players will flat out refuse to go, others would rather be playing first team football, all depends on the player and who’s offering him what.

Ofc it would but won’t be easy to shift some of our dead weight.
Hopefully Hendrick goes to the Boro as it’s one that definitely surplus to requirements.
I wonder if Gayle goes if we bring in another striker

Comment #145Clark will be gone by Monday end, I’m sure.
Probably let him leave for nothing to a Champ club.
Same with Hendrick and Gayle f another ST comes in.
Offload a GK as well.
My two candidates for surprise outgoings are Almiron and to a lesser extent Ritchie.

Comment #149Shola – Cant see us selling Miggy, he might not start much but he’ll do a job in the last 15-20 mins when others are getting tired. I know he doesn’t have much end product but he’s great for closing down and tracking runners.

Comment #156Not entirely sold on nketiah but he could progress along the lines of tammy Abraham….the Brighton lad is a no brainer relatively low outlay for a position we are crying out for who we know can do a job until we go again in the summer for our prime targets….. Also ciaran Clarke really must have shite for brains.
