Newcastle’s Winter Business Likely To End With A Total Of Six Through The Door

Newcastle are pushing to have three deadline day transfers completed today. An agreement for Dan Burn was reached with Brighton yesterday for £13m while Matt Targett has arrived on Tyneside ahead of a loan move.

The biggest surprise is Newcastle going back in for Reims striker Hugo Ekitike late last night. The French club, after rejecting Newcastle’s offers earlier in the window, have now accepted a bid of around £25m plus add-ons. The 19-year-old is currently discussing personal terms.

Bringing in the young Frenchman should help alleviate the disappointment over failed moves for other attackers. Newcastle haven’t been able to reach an agreement with Atalanta for striker Duvan Zapata or Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.

It is also being reported this morning that Eddie Nketiah will remain at Arsenal until the summer when his current contract will expire. Moves for Napoli striker Victor Ohsimen and Atletico Madrid’s Yannick Carrasco have also been downplayed recently.

There was also news this morning that Newcastle have tabled an offer for West Ham’s Issa Diop. This comes from Ryan Taylor with Express Sport, who expects the offer to be turned down.

However, Sky Sports’ Keith Downie suspects that 25-year-old represents a backup plan should anything happen with the move for Dan Burn.

As Downie states, he doesn’t expect any more defenders brought in beyond Burn and Targett. Targett’s loan move could end up being permanent in the summer as those details are still being hashed out.

It appears that it’s probably the three in today to double the January haul to six. The move for Hugo Ekitike is the one to watch as he is based on the continent and could go down to the wire. Burn and Targett are further along than the 19-year-old.

The Athletic’s George Caulkin has provided the following from a source about any more coming in after Ekitike. It seems very unlikely according to the following statement.

Don’t get loaning Lewis out unless there is another incoming LB.

    Targett and Bakker perhaps?

Couldn’t see targett joining if he knew we were getting another lb coming in so i think he’s it for that position, diop maybe from west ham….i would like to see lewis stay and learn from trips, targett, bruno, even dummett would offer something to the lad….would like a surprise big money cb coming in tho….but if they players we are linked with today sign…its a crackin window regardless

I would have thought they would keep Lewis and ship others out to make room for incomings. Strange one.

Getting six signings over the line in January, a notoriously difficult month, makes you wonder what we’ll do in the summer. Haaland and Mbape anyone (I’d prefer the former to the latter but wouldn’t complain)?

If true, seems like Howe is sticking to 4 at the back. We’ll see if he move out Ritchie too. Don’t see a point loaning Lewis to a championship team, unless he plan to sell him in the summer.

Don’t think Bakker coming in. More like Howe planning to stick with back 4. Targett,Dummet and Burn. So Ritchie or Lewis have to be moved out.

using the dennis wise youtube i think ekitike is a work in progress …cannot see how the wonder kid gets such a huge rep..would prefer arsenals wonder kid or lingard …just goes to show unless you go to matches and see you can get a false impression of a player…trippier off the ball is a prime example (not in the geoff nulty way)..class..happy to be proved wrong…

Fantastic window if we can pull the Etikike move off.

I am a bit sceptical about those saying one for the future. Surely if we are spending 30m+ then we are confident of his abilities?

How young was Rooney when he started playing for Everton on a regular basis?

It has been my bug bear in the last 15 years how badly we have intergrated youth players. We have lost no end of talent because they haven’t been given a chance in the first team.

I’d want Etikite on the team sheet ASAP so that he can show us what he can do.

Re: Lewis…if he’s not in the plans hes not in the plans. Either Lewis himself or Howe wants to see game time and it seems it will only get harder now. I think Ritchie stays at least until summer for his leadership and grease between the cogs…who doesn’t need a “friendly” slap on the head every now and again.

“Contrary to what the English media have been indicating since Monday morning, Reims and Newcastle have not yet reached an agreement for the transfer of Hugo Ekitike (19), according to information from RMC Sport. Discussions are continuing but the Stade de Reims has still not had the expected offer: 30 million euros + 10 million bonuses achievable. The management wants to be firm on this point considering that it has no reason to sell to balance the accounts within a club with a healthy financial situation. (AV)”

Not convinced by ekitike at all. Looks far too lightweight for the price. A gust of wind would blow him over never mind the stronger, more physical players he’ll be up against.

    Jail,

Behind the scenes we dont know what happened during negotiations. At times we must have put our foot down, and at others we may have caved in and offered a bit more. From afar, it does look like we have held our fort sufficiently strong.

It certainly isnt like Ashley where we have a hard stand on almost every transfer.
