Good news early in the final day of the transfer, with an agreement being reached with Aston Villa to have former target – Matt Targett – on loan at Newcastle for the rest of the season.
The Athletic are reporting this today, along with many other outlets.
We were after Targett a few years ago, and he is a very good left-back with lots of Premier League experience, who should further strengthen our defense for the 17 game run-in this season.
After Villa signed Lucas Digne from Everton once Steven Gerrard became Villa’s manager, Targett became second choice at Villa.
When that happened, Newcastle became interested again in signing the very dependable left-back.
With Trippier signed and Dan Burn about to be announced, this will make three back-four players signed in this window.
That’s in addition to defensive midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who will also help out in front of the two center-backs.
And Fabrizio Romano is reporting Targett is having his medical right now.
Done deal and another interesting one for Newcastle, medical ongoing right now. Official statement soon. ?????? #NUFC https://t.co/A9v46GnIzw
— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) January 31, 2022
Targett will be the 5th signing of the window if all goes well today, and we expect at least one more player to be brought in today.
The Athletic are also reporting that “Newcastle are also hopeful of acquiring Reims forward Hugo Ekitike before the window closes.”
And late news that Newcastle have reached an agreement on the fee for Ekitike.
So this is a good start to the final day of this transfer window, which has been the best January transfer window for Newcastle for decades.
It’s all happening at the moment!
🙂
Here’s Targett arriving for his medical at Benton.

Comment #5Vote of confidence for you, Kets from me too. You’ve been posting here for a long time, and are an interesting part of the big picture of what is this site. I wouldn’t be surprised if you live and work in Cyprus 😉
I really don’t understand the over the top aggressiveness by one otherwise very good new poster.
Folks, Kets just puts out his opinion, never gets in an argument or the common childish keyboard warfare. You can agree, disagree, or just skip. No need for ganging up and name-calling.
Onwards and upwards.

Comment #12Rotonda, give up the sniping will you? I come on here to find two snipes by you already
I’ve clearly explained that I have only seen Ekitike on the Dennis Wise, so I dont have in depth knowledge – happy to leave that to Eddie. Nickson and Co. However what I saw didnt inspire me and he looks very weak. But he’s young etc so clearly has potential. I wasnt the only one to ask questions by the way – but I’ll always be the one targetted by the bitter boys.
Its just a judgement – it’s allowed ok? And Im not claiming detailed knowledge. Got it ?
Perhaps you’re feeling a bit salty because the man you could bear to see criticised, went into a career tailspin. I had pointed out his faults and argued that he was being but beyond criticism. And guess who was proven correct ?
I’m delighted if we get Ekitike – Eddie and Nickson know their stuff.
No doubt if he scored 30 a season, you and Jail will be double teaming me again?

Comment #18So if we’re loaning Targett that only allows us one more domestic loan; so it could now be Henderson for the GK spot. Is the loan for Lingard off then? Or will it be a permanent transfer with a possible relegation clause.

Never say never of course, but a senior source at #NUFC tells me that deals for Ekitike, Burn & Targett will complete their incoming business this month.
Could there be any more? “God, no!” It’s a long day though, so let’s see what happens.

Comment #20IrishRob, he was Villas Players’ Player of the Season for 2020-21 in a team that had Grealish, Watkins, Konsa and Luiz etc….
Targett isn’t a world beater, but he’s a consistent Premier League quality fullback at the right age with the right experience and good numbers, that is exactly what we need right now, he’s head and shoulders above Lewis, Dummet and Ritchie and is just another piece of the puzzle, if we get to summer and do take up the purchase option you’d hope we’d then sign another left back of a higher calibre and then have Targett and Lewis as cover (Dummet is out of contract and I can’t see Ritchie lasting beyond the summer), something we’ve not had in years.
For me he’s a good signing and one that wont need 4 or 5 games to get up to speed with the League, he’ll slot straight in.

Comment #21We should put bids in for players our rivals want(bigger bids), then pull out of negotiations with no time left for them to do anything.

Comment #28I’d still like to hope maybe there’ll be a last minute call from Man United looking to meet in the middle with a Lingard deal, but with them losing Martial and DVdB on Loan and now Greenwood for god knows how long I think they’ll not be assessing their situation in terms of cover.

Comment #29Niafron; there are a few uk outlets saying a deal has been agreed.

Comment #37Ive a funny feeling Hugo Ekitike won’t be signed for this window. Just get the feeling he will get done today but won’t play for us until the summer, or they put him in the u23’s or something.
Hopefully I’m wrong we could do with him atm even if he’s an unknown quantity

But, but you said you liked RB!! God help those you don’t like!
Not salty in the least as everyone, apart from you obviously, has so moved on, yet you were hammering EH too after he’d only been here 5 minutes.
Most people would say Arteta, Frank, EH and RB were reasonably good coaches and that bruce was sh-te. That’s most people right. Most people are also really up for this Ekitike coming, despite your 5 minute critique.
You can’t dispute the fact that you do habitually repeat and say exactly the same things time and again ad nauseum. That’s kind of irrefutable as one only has to look at your posts for the last 5 years where you trot out the same mantras on a daily basis. I guess you are just incapable of stopping yourself. Fair and balanced, that was a stock good one of yours….!
That’s not a swipe it’s a fact. As the kids would say ” B-O-R-I-N-G”.
