Newcastle climbed out of the bottom six into 14th place in the league table with a resounding 2-0 win at Brentford. While Josh Dasilva’s early exit helped matters, the lads put in a very professional performance to earn the three points.
The other results around the league went Newcastle’s way as Watford and Burnley only managed draws with other clubs around us suffering defeats. Here is a look at the league table as it currently stands.
Club | Matches | Goal Difference | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|
9 | Brighton | 38 | -2 | 51 |
10 | Wolves | 38 | -5 | 51 |
11 | Newcastle | 38 | -18 | 49 |
12 | Palace | 38 | 4 | 48 |
13 | Brentford | 38 | -8 | 46 |
14 | Villa | 38 | -2 | 45 |
15 | Southampton | 38 | -24 | 40 |
16 | Everton | 38 | -23 | 39 |
17 | Leeds | 38 | -37 | 38 |
18 | Burnley | 38 | -19 | 35 |
The focus again shifts to our next opponent. On Saturday Brighton, who have lost three on the trot, come to St. James’ Park. The Seagulls were beaten by Aston Villa, the only club in the lower half of the table other than Newcastle to win today.
It’s easy to get carried away with this recent surge. Newcastle are in a very good place at the moment but a bad couple of matches can easily spoil things. So the focus has to be to keep this terrific run going.
Eddie Howe was quick to emphasize that the job is far from done. There are still 13 matches to play and the lads need to continue to pick up points to steer clear from the bottom three.
Here is the head coach’s words of warning as published in The Mail:
“The relegation picture for me goes right to the wire. We don’t want to be involved but our next run of games dictates what happens. We have to be focused, not be carried away with results.”
Newcastle are only 4 points from the drop zone with Burnley inviting Leicester to Turf Moor on Tuesday. The gap could be even less should The Clarets keep their unbeaten run alive.
The next few weeks could determine how nervy the final stretch of this season is. There are five matches to play before the March international break. It’s imperative Newcastle keep this momentum going.
Things can change very quickly in this league. Brentford were flying high to start this season but are now in the thick of a relegation battle. Their drop mirrors that of Leeds who have collapsed in recent weeks.
In a season of coaching changes, there could be yet another casualty. The Athletic’s David Ornstein is reporting that Leeds could part ways with Marcelo Bielsa after a run of four straight losses.
? Growing expectation that Marcelo Bielsa will be leaving position as Leeds United head coach. Final discussion yet to take place but his exit now increasingly likely. Jesse Marsch firm favourite to be named as successor. W/ @PhilHay_ @TheAthleticUK #LUFC https://t.co/9ewRbHidyL

I enjoyed Fraser’s post match interview. His face was a picture he looks like he’s loving football now. Developing to one of my favourite players. His crosses are outstanding. Not scared to use both feet either which I value. That puts him ahead of Almiron for me. Miggy is really going to have to up his game to get in the starting line up.
I would still be interested to see how miggy and Bruno could link up playing against high line defense. Still miggy needs to improve his final ball and I hope he does.

I was just saying to some guy at the Costa machine in my local petrol station this morning that is excellent to be able to look forward to Saturdays again. I always kind of did even under the previous regime but there was always the undertone of dread that accompanied that. Now there is such a good feeling around the team that you can share that with people you haven’t met before in a moment of solidarity when committing the sacralige of working on a Saturday.

Premier League table on January 14 compared to February 26.
In little over a month, #NUFC have overturned a 12 point deficit on Brentford with two games in hand.
Seven games unbeaten in the top flight for the first time since 2011.

Comment #97For decades Russia has practised human rights abuse, locked away political opponents, poisoned people in Salisbury and started a war in Ukraine that threate a world peace.
And what made Richard Masters and the EPL think that this was OK? Some close forensic examination of some bank accounts might be a good place to start?
And please call in that £1.5 b loan on Chelski. That seems the decent thing to do.
BBC Sport understands Chelsea are not for sale, and the £1.5bn loan their owner Abramovich gave to the club is not being called in.
Abramovich is one of Russia’s richest people and is believed to be close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Is it not a ‘separate the church and state’ thing?
I imagine it would take years of espionage to gather the evidence that linked Abramovich to the intricacies of the Russian states method of population control. Sounds complicated.

Comment #104Just been having a look at the table. I’m setting my sights on catching Southampton. They are ten points ahead and we have a game in hand. If we win our game in hand (against Everton at Goddison) that leaves us 7 behind them. Then we have to play them. If we win that means we only have to pick up 5 points more than they do in the remaining 8 or nine games of the season. I think it’s possible.
Tell me if I’m getting carried away. 😀

Ashley you fat waste of space, you see what happens when you actually give a shite about the club.
On Targett, I think he honestly loves playing for the Toon Army and will ask for a transfer end of season.
Having him and Tripps filling those positions makes us way more stronger.
And a shout out to Big Joe, complete beast and how he’s turned around his football career, one of best midfielders by far.
That 40 Million is now closer to 30 million, a few more goals out of him and that 40 Million will seem like a bargain.

Comment #116Catching up again a bit late here tonight but just got done reading through Frasiers comments and these two really grasps the difference in mentality Eddie has given this team… “The gaffer told us to try and win three or four nil” and “The gaffer had a meeting before the game at the hotel and his quote was ‘Do you want to be hunted or be the hunter?’.
Just a complete 180 that we all already knew compared to the dross given before and after each match the previous 2 years…can’t wait to see West Brom lose again on Monday night as it looks like they are tied with bottom Peterborough for worst form over the last 5 games now. All those top teams he has been playing all of which could be playing the big league with the big teams….hahahahaha

It’s a 180 to more or less every manager we’ve had since Robson. I was thinking before the game we’d have generally been under instructions to make sure Brentford didn’t get the 3 points. As Geordies, we more than any other fans, demand attacking nice football first and foremost.
Ashley only had to do one thing, choose a decent DoF, who then had to simply chose half-decent managers who attack. But we went with a very long line of mostly British managers who played the conservative way we can’t tolerate. Is it any wonder we didn’t like the Wally, Souness, Dalglish, Allardyce, Pardew (except that half season when Ben Arfa & Cisse went wild), or that we didn’t give Bruce time? The only managers I liked were Roeder and Hughton, because they were humble and almost just came in as caretakers. And Rafa had pedigree and was improving us. Even with him, I still hoped, he’d sort our defence then hand over the reigns to Rodgers or one of the geigen press managers.
If Bruce was committed to passing and attacking, we’d have forgiven the poor results and got behind him, especially as a Gerordie. Or if he’d won dozens of trophies, we’d have trusted his defensive ways and put aside our dislike of that style of playing.
Quite simply, unless you can persuade us you’re a proven winner, defensive managers are not welcome here and hopefully never will be.

Comment #118Fraser looked superb last night, a 9/10 performance. Shows what he can do when he actually wants to play for us. I don’t think he wanted to come to a ‘smaller’ team like us when Arsenal and others were linked. He wanted to play for a big club so much he even refused to play for Bournemouth in case he got injured. Then they pulled out. Now we have money, so are a big club, he looks like the Fraser of 4 seasons ago.
Fraser, Schar, Joelinton, Willock, Shelvey are like 5 new signings. I still have faith we’ll see the same with Lascelles if he’s playing in an organised team. And I really fancy Wilson (if he recovers) to be on fire if we are creating chances. And I’m not giving up on Longstaff, Murphy and Lewis. They can push for a place with confidence and the right coaching.

He’d never get in the team surely…our current centre forwards record is won 4 drawn 2 (according to some), so surely that means Wilson just becomes a bench warmer if the same logic used on here is applied.

Surely Chris Wood gets his first goal against the sieve like Brighton defence and there’s no way that Wor Eddie H is letting Potter have freedom of the pitch that Cheese Bruce did in their last two encounters, once Potter had sussed his tactics or lack of them out.
