Howe Provides Update On Saint-Maximin Ahead Of Brighton Match

Eddie Howe has provided an update on Allan Saint-Maximin during this morning’s press conference. The winger is due to return to training today and, depending on how he fares, could be in contention for Saturday’s match against Brighton.

Here is Howe’s update per Newcastle’s Twitter account:

“Maxi hasn’t trained yet with us but we’re hoping he does today. We’ll have to make a decision based off how he looks and how his injury status is after the session.

“Other than that, we’re as we were pre-Brentford.”

Saint-Maximin has missed the previous two matches – a draw at West Ham and a win at Brentford – after taking a whack to his calf in the win over Aston Villa. He spent last week in Monaco with a specialist.

Before the Brentford match, Howe said Allan faced a late fitness test, which he didn’t pass. He faces one again though with him back in training today, his odds are a bit better that he can at least make the bench.

Howe may not want to rush the 24-year-old back with three away matches in a week on the horizon. Ryan Fraser was unplayable on the left against The Bees. His performance is deserving of an encore on his preferred flank.

Jacob Murphy also played well down his natural right-hand side after being a straight swap for Allan against West Ham. Allan’s return is not as critical with Ryan and Jacob getting the job done in his absence.

Eddie Howe on the Manager of the Month nomination:

“I haven’t given it too much thought because my focus has been on this game but I will say that any type of accolade is a real statement for the staff and the players, not just one person. It’s very much a collective effort.”

Eddie Howe says he’ll sit down with Fabian Schär’s agent very soon to open contract talks.
On Sean Longstaff: “I love Sean, but I maybe haven’t displayed that with my team selections. I really do rate him highly. I believe he has a long-term future here.” #NUFC

Eddie Howe on competition for places:

“When I first came in to the job we wanted competition for places in all positions. I wouldn’t say we’re absolutely there yet but I think there’s a healthy competition in the squad.”

    Eddie Howe on Joelinton:

“I think there’s centre-forward qualities in there. Last week we saw that – it was a brilliant header. It was great to see him attack the box. His flexibility is something we’ll utilise but he’s doing so well in midfield I’m reluctant to move him.”

    Eddie Howe on Ryan Fraser:

“He has played very well for me on the left [at Bournemouth]. I’ve used him more off the right here due to Maxi preferring that side too so it’s a difficult one. I’ve said before that good players can play in multiple positions and Ryan’s proved that.”

“He’s a great lad and has mixed well with the team. He’s got the respect of everyone with how he’s conducted himself and he’s trained very well. He had to be patient for a little period but when he got his chance in the team he’s performed very strongly.”

Lesh – the flaws in using the Daily Fail as bog roll are firstly in acquiring such item, secondly that it’s an assault to arses everywhere, and thirdly that it doesn’t serve its purpose because it’s more full of shit that the shittiest arse.

Tom – I don’t think anyone is calling for Amanda’s head or demanding she quits the club. And if they are, then I’d agree that they’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

She’s entitled to her thoughts, what many of us are saying is that she was very unwise to speak them out loud. In private and with appropriate context, maybe her comments make sense, but as a public figure she needs to be smarter about what she says. Just like Tuchel and Lampard have been recently.

I’m kinda happy ASM is unavailable to play tomorrow…but kinda disappointed that I doubt we’ll see Bruno start because we need a winger on the right and the left, which will more than likely be Murphy and Fraser, and that means Bruno can’t play if Jonjo is playing.

Would like to see Miggy given the chance on the left or right because he’s a great defender and can bang in a cross as well…so maybe Miggy and Fraser swopping wings throughout the game would work because Murphy seems to be struggling at the minute.

Either way we’ve got options, which is a million miles away from where we were under under the fat knacker.

Mund – really? You think this is just about football when most of the world is trying to starve the Russian war machine and cut off the country from luxuries to put pressure on them to stop the war?

Russian teams and athletes banned from all sorts of sports now and Russian oligarchs (who will all have close connections to Putin) are having assets frozen or seized to put extra pressure on Putin.

You really think it’s wise to publicly state that you feel “really sad” for Abramovich?? REALLY SAD???

I also don’t think anyone on here is flapping or wanting anyone burned at the steak, it is a topic of conversation and we’re discussing it. Everyone seems in agreement that they were ill judged comments, as I said I think she’ll learn from it. She is relatively new to being such a public figure and of course there will be teething problems. She should probably get some advice on an expert who deals with media training when she gets a chance.

Very silly comments to make alright, Abramovich great for Chelsea bad for millions of innocent people with his questionable source of income & how closely tied to Putin he is. In pure football terms I’d agree with her.

I think everyone is on the same page really, they were daft comments and a blunder for her to say publicly in an interview.

Whether you agree with the actual statement she gave or not, think we can basically all agree it’s bad PR and a blunder. As the press were always going to have a field day reporting on it and give us negative media coverage based on it.
