Recently, Eddie Howe revealed that contract talks were set to begin with Fabian Schar, who is out of contract in the summer. The 30-year-old confirmed that telling a Swiss outlet that he expected his future to be sorted out in a few weeks.
Fabian can sign a pre-contract with a foreign club as he is only a few months away from his contract expiring. Schar made it clear that his priority is to remain on Tyneside, where he has emerged as Howe’s preferred right-footed center-back.
Schar is not the only Magpie Howe is keen to keep on board. He’s mentioned his desire to get Sean Longstaff penned to an extension. Like Schar, Sean is out of contract in the summer but he has not received that amount of games of the Swiss defender.
Nevertheless, The Times is reporting that Newcastle and Longstaff have now entered contract negotiations. The 24-year-old is still on the contract he signed in December 2018 before his breakthrough into the first team one month later.
It’s been a bumpy ride for Sean since that glorious eight-match stretch under Rafa Benitez early in 2019. A knee injury brought that season to an abrupt end and he’s struggled for form and confidence ever since.
Sean has not yet gotten a prolonged chance under the new boss. He’s made just 8 appearances, only 2 of which were starts, since Howe’s appointment in early November.
He’s still young and Howe can potentially get the best out of him. With him being a local lad, getting Sean extended for at least the next couple of seasons makes a lot of sense.
