Newcastle’s League Position Gets More Tenuous After Molineux Drama

The relegation battle got a lot more interesting after Leeds’ dramatic come from behind victory at Wolves last night. It was yet another Premier League match affected by a questionable refereeing decision.

Wolves stormed to a two-goal first-half lead with some questionable defending from the visitors. Leeds had a mountain to climb but received a helping hand when referee Kevin Friend showed Raul Jimenez a second yellow card early in the second half.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier came out of his area to clear a ball that Jimenez was bearing down on. The two collided in what looked like a clear 50/50 challenge. Both players received treatment with Meslier forced to come off.

However, Friend produced a yellow card for Jiminez resulting in an early exit. Leeds stormed back with three goals including Luke Ayling’s stoppage-time winner for a massive three points.

The win pushes Leeds seven points above the drop zone and just 2 points behind Newcastle, whose inability to get anything at Goodison Park has caused some more discomfort in our league standing.

Another match that could impact Newcastle is Brentford’s trip to Leicester City tomorrow. The Bees can jump Newcastle with just a draw at The Foxes. Here is a look at the Premier League table.

ClubMatchesGoal DifferencePoints

14Villa38-245
15Southampton38-2440
16Everton38-2339
17Leeds38-3738
18Burnley38-1935

The cold hard truth is that Newcastle are going to have to save themselves. We need at least three more wins in the remaining nine fixtures. Hopefully we’ll get the points necessary before our trip to Burnley on the final day of this campaign.

Let us hope they come back from Dubai with the same mindset as to when they came back from KSA… Eddie certainly a back of getting the team bonding right. Massive game against Tottenham, if we get it right on the pitch assisted with a good rest and warm weather training should see us OK.

“The team right now are killing it so I’m really happy for them. Even now, when I watch the games and you see over 3,000 people travelling for an away game – it’s crazy! You start to remember those times when you were playing away and you

felt like you were playing at St James’ Park.

“I still get goosebumps. It was a crazy year for me. I miss those days a little bit, but I’m really happy where I am right now.”

Unfortunately no, my real support started just after 55 and there wasn’t the same amount of Media as there is now so any highlights would have been at the pictures we didn’t have a TV 🙁

A lot of the cup winning lads were still playing though so got to see them.

Don’t know what all the fuss is about just because Leeds won. We only need to stay above the bottom three. Can’t see that being a problem. Even if we lose to Tottenham we have a game in hand and then we come home and will win.

Abramovic’s plane was tracked to Moscow. The presumption is he was on it.

If true – says it all – him bolting back there.

Terrible the events in Ukraine – hopefully the Russian war criminals will face justice.

Re ASM and his detractors, I think it’s an insecurity thing, they feel like they’re a somebody by slagging off a famous person. It’s not just Toon fans, but hey, that’s social media for you, full of spineless little children with nothing to say – and don’t get me started on the “gramma”.

I think us English have it ingrained in us to hate skillful players. At school the best Maradonaesque players were called greedy and everybody had it in for them. The ones valued most usually seemed to be the midfielder who could run two marathons and play simple one metre passes. This is probably why our national team has been so workmanlike and dour since Gazza. It’s madness so many saying drop ASM when our options are Murphy who has played ok at best while we’ve been dominating, and Fraser who has had two stunning games and a bunch of solid ones, but has been poor for a few years before that. I can only assume It’s the same that wanted Ben Arfa out when he was contributing towards a goal every three games and we only had Obertan, Gouffran etc as alternatives who were abysmal.

Scoular was a cracking player and captained Scotland…

But he was also one of the hardest men ever to wear a Toon shirt.

    A true story…

A young Billy Bremner, already making a name for himself, was playing one of his first games for Leeds at SJP.

Scoular walked over during the knockabout and shook Billy’s hand and asked if his parents had come down from Scotland to watch him play…

“Aye”, said Billy “they are up there sitting in the stand”.

“Well” said Scoular “I’ll give you a bit of advice for the game”.

Bremner, in awe of the great Scoular was all ears…

“Come anywhere near me in the match wee lad…

“And you’ll end up in the fkn stands with them”.

    🙂 🙂 🙂

EGB, it was the 1932 cup final I believe. The third goal in our 1966 World Cup victory would have been ruled out by VAR. My German friends took a long time to get over that. I just pointed to the fourth goal.

Neil, I believe we only need a win and two draws in our final 9 games to be safe. I was also pleased for Leeds. Their gung-ho football is good for the EPL.
