It does look as though we will be safe in the Premier League, and a few wins in the next 4 or 5 games would be really welcome.
So, assuming we are still in the Premier League come the summer, the owners will be wanting to strengthen the squad even further for next season, by bringing in some top players, so we can be at least in the top eight.
So let’s go through the positions and pick out those players we think are superfluous this summer and will likely leave the club.
In the comments section, readers can also say who they think will be leaving.
Goalkeepers
It’s probably time to let Karl Darlow leave for pastures anew: we expect a new top goalkeeper top be brought in and Darlow, if he stays will not even be on the bench.
Karl has been a good servant since he joined us from Nottingham Forest (with Jamaal Lascelles) but it’s time for him to move on.
Freddie Woodman has been an emerging young talent now for too long, and the 25-year-old is on loan at Bournemouth since late January, but cannot get a start there with 22-year-old Irishman Mark Travers still the first choice ‘keeper.
Travers has been in excellent form for the Cherries all season, and Woodman has made just one appearance – in the FA Cup for the Cherries this year.
So in the goalkeeping department, we expect Darlow and Woodman to leave and a top goalkeeper brought in.
Full Backs
Jamal Lewis is not in the Premier League 25 since February and we expect him to be sold, and if recent reports are true Newcastle want only £8M for him which is just less than half what we paid for him.
For whatever reason, it seems Eddie Howe has not rated the 24-year-old and Matt Targett has been brought in during January, to make that left-back spot his own.
Paul Dummett’s contract is up this summer, and we don’t think he will be here next season. Paul is a good player when fit, but he misses too many games, including half of this season, and we expect Eddie Howe to bring in a versatile full-back this summer who can challenge for a first-team position.
So it looks like the end of his Newcastle career for Paul.
We have a feeling Emil Krafth will be staying.
So, it’s Lewis and Dummett to leave and another top full-back to be brought in this summer.
Center Backs
Burn and Schar have been terrific playing together at the back since early February and we expect the impressive 30-year-old Swiss International to get at least a two-year extension to his contract soon.
33-year-old Federico Fernandez has been injured most of the season, and while he is an experienced Premier League player who has been good when he’s played, it could be curtains for the 32 times capped former Argentine International.
Ciaran Clark has been another good servant to the club since he signed in the summer of 2016, but it’s now time to move on and we expect Howe to bring in a young center-back in the summer.
Central Midfielders
Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock, Joelinton, and new-boy Bruno Guimaraes have all played well this year and our midfield now looks very strong.
30-year-old Jeff Hendrick joined us as a free agent in the summer of 2020 on a four-year deal, but he hasn’t set the toon alight and he will be on offer this summer – for sure.
Jeff is on loan at QPR this year where he has made 7 appearances.
Isaac Hayden has been another good servant of the club who joined us back in the summer of 2016, and he is injured and was not included in the 25-man squad this year for the Premier League.
It will be a surprise to many, but we expect Isaac to be on offer this summer, although it seems he really wants to stay on Tyneside.
He was a bargain buy by Rafa Benitez – and only £2M from Arsenal.
Wingers
Miguel Almiron was touted as a top player when he arrived at Newcastle in January 2019, but he has not fulfilled his promise, and we expect him to move on this summer.
Miguel is also keen to get first-team playing time and likely will welcome a move this summer.
Strikers
We have no idea why Eddie Howe doesn’t want to play Dwight Gayle in the Newcastle team because since Callum Wilson has been out since late December we haven’t been able to score enough goals, although we have collected many points and wins to move up the table rather dramatically this year.
But the writing has been on the wall for Dwight at Newcastle, and he will leave this summer, and he will be thanked by the fans for his terrific exploits in our promotion season when he scored 23 goals in 32 Championship appearances.
We expect the owners to bring in maybe two strikers – an experienced world-class striker and an up-and-coming top striker in the making.
So there you have it – we expect the following players will likely be moved out this summer.
Karl Darlow
Freddie Woodman
Jamal Lewis
Paul Dummett
Federico Fernandez
Ciaran Clark
Jeff Hendrick
Isaac Hayden
Miguel Almiron
Dwight Gayle
Finally, a very happy birthday to Wynn Davies – 80 today – I used to watch the big center forward in the late 60s, heading in those goals for Newcastle.
🙂
Let us know what you think.

Comment #4Palace 3 up against Everton in the Cup. Makes our lack of a result against Everton even more galling.
We need to beat Palace as well.
Maybe have to bri g in one of our young strikers or Gayle even as need someone who can grab goals.

Lineker really is a little wazzock.
Bet he was the school playground snitch.
Typical politician, opens his gob without engaging his brain and tries to justify what he says by trying to placate the puppet masters by pulling his strings.
Needs to be given an afternoon quiz show and let Ian Wright or the like host MOTD.

It’s been and gone mate and no two games are the same.
Everton were shite on both occasions but had more fight vs us in the league but we were the downfall of that result as we played very poor second half. It is what it is tho as we don’t look back we look forward

Comment #20Everton don’t want be distracted by the Cup, their only objective is to stay up, otherwise with their debts they could be gone for good and then no new stadium and they end up like Derby.
Have the FA bottled their points deductions?

Comment #23We had over 20 mins to capitalise when having the extra man on the pitch and failed miserably. Only got ourselves to blame. Good time for them to be away and regroup. They’ll be most certainly gutted about chucking the point away at least.
Suppose the Dubai trip is also a little reward from the boardroom as well for the brilliant run we went on.
Reckon wor Eddie will be looking to have a right go at Spurs at their place.

Comment #25Ed, can’t argue with the 10 named. Lascelles, Shelvey, Fraser could also be considered. Whilst they have been better of late they are not long term; possible squad players alongside Willock and big Joe. To have a team that can push on, and maybe go for a cup, we need to improve our attacking options and midfield. Only Bruno and ASM fit the bill at the minute.

Comment #26I’d personally make Darlow, Woodman, Clark, Dummett, Hendricks, Almiron and Gayle available for transfer. Other squad players made available for loan (Kraft, Longstaff, Murphy).

Comment #28Ritchie, Krafth, The Longstaffe brothers and Gillespie (the never seen goalkeeper) should also be dispensed with.
I wouldn’t part with Jamaal Lewis however as I’d rather see him as a left back back up than Ritchie and Dummett.
Two or three good quality loans would improve these positions in the squad without adding to the main expenditure for really top performers.
Finally Happy Birthday to one of my big heroes Wyn Davies. Was there ever a better header of a ball than that big man?

Comment #29You can add Wood as one to move on, but I can understand forgetting he’s there. I’d take a good bid for Wilson, but if theres no bid big he’s worth keeping on the off chance he can stay fit.

Comment #30With a bigger squad we’d be able to rotate more and keep Wilson fit, and tbf we all know what a fit Wilson can offer, Even if just used as a back up I think he’s worth keeping hold of at least for next season

Comment #31Having said that a top class striker is a must if we’re going to push up the table, We will also need a quality creative centre mid as we lack goals from midfield I’d love a lampard type player
