30-year-old Callum Wilson has been a big miss for Newcastle this year with a calf injury, although our lads have done really well before losing our last two games with no luck at all at Chelsea and Everton.
Both games resulted in 1-0 defeats, with goals conceded at the very death.
But the good news is that the squad has had their second warm-weather training camp this year – this time in Dubai – and we are expecting them to be super-fit (and sunburned) when we play at Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.
When Callum Wilson is in the team, we are a much more dangerous side with the England International a natural goalscorer.
But Callum is one of those players who gets injured too often, and we can only rely on about half a season from him.
That’s one reason the new owners will bring in a seasoned goalscorer this summer, and maybe a young striker too.
The very good news is that Callum is running again, and head coach Eddie Howe has said the number 9 striker could return as early as the Crustal Palace game at St. James Park on April 20th
Callum Wilson had this to say on today’s BBC Footballer’s Football Podcast.
“The injury is going in the right direction,”
“I’m jogging now, which is positive steps and yeah, just increasing day by day working harder and ticking different boxes off.
“You know how it is coming back from injury, you’ve got to hit certain markers before you can go into the next stage of your rehab and stuff like that.”
“So we’re in and out of boots, trainers, doing different runs and things like that and just building up that load really.”
“Soon, the comeback will be there, and I’m hoping to get a fair few games in.”
“You know what it’s like, as a striker you want to score on your return so I’m working hard and holding onto that moment, for when you do return, to make sure that it’s a positive one.”
Here are the remaining games of the season.

If Wilson can return, say for the game at Norwich on 23rd April, he could help us pick up some points in the final 5 tough games of the season.
Callum has six goals in just 15 appearances for Newcastle in the Premier League this season, and is still our top goalscorer, so striker is a position we must strengthen (and will do) in the summer.
Here’s where we stand now in the league before we start our 9 game run-in at Tottenham on Sunday.
