Striker Continues To Have Very Good News For Newcastle Fans

30-year-old Callum Wilson has been a big miss for Newcastle this year with a calf injury, although our lads have done really well before losing our last two games with no luck at all at Chelsea and Everton.

Both games resulted in 1-0 defeats, with goals conceded at the very death.

🙁

But the good news is that the squad has had their second warm-weather training camp this year – this time in Dubai – and we are expecting them to be super-fit (and sunburned) when we play at Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

When Callum Wilson is in the team, we are a much more dangerous side with the England International a natural goalscorer.

But Callum is one of those players who gets injured too often, and we can only rely on about half a season from him.

That’s one reason the new owners will bring in a seasoned goalscorer this summer, and maybe a young striker too.

The very good news is that Callum is running again, and head coach Eddie Howe has said the number 9 striker could return as early as the Crustal Palace game at St. James Park on April 20th

Callum Wilson had this to say on today’s BBC Footballer’s Football Podcast.

“The injury is going in the right direction,”

“I’m jogging now, which is positive steps and yeah, just increasing day by day working harder and ticking different boxes off.

“You know how it is coming back from injury, you’ve got to hit certain markers before you can go into the next stage of your rehab and stuff like that.”

“So we’re in and out of boots, trainers, doing different runs and things like that and just building up that load really.”

“Soon, the comeback will be there, and I’m hoping to get a fair few games in.”

“You know what it’s like, as a striker you want to score on your return so I’m working hard and holding onto that moment, for when you do return, to make sure that it’s a positive one.”

Here are the remaining games of the season.

If Wilson can return, say for the game at Norwich on 23rd April, he could help us pick up some points in the final 5 tough games of the season.

Callum has six goals in just 15 appearances for Newcastle in the Premier League this season, and is still our top goalscorer, so striker is a position we must strengthen (and will do) in the summer.

Here’s where we stand now in the league before we start our 9 game run-in at Tottenham on Sunday.

    NY from previous

Cheers mate I appreciate it. Dead excited for both! Haven’t been to St James’ since October 2008! I was only 14 then! Mainly due to financial reasons but also not wanting to give any sort of money towards Ashley haha So excited to go back and also spend a few days in toon 🙂 Then getting to experience the away fans again, last away match was also here in Norwich in January 2014!

Definitely going to try and get to more games for next season 🙂 hopefully you can head over and catch a game next season too!

Can’t wait to see him back he’s been a big miss, even though we’ve done well I think we’d have beat Chelsea and Everton with him playing

I hope we don’t try to rush him back. I wonder if Howe will revert to his favoured 4-4-2 with Wood and Wilson up top together. That could bring the best out of Wood providing Wilson can stay fit.

It’s nice to have some trust in our manager and coaching team to handle injuries properly now. So I don’t think he’ll be rushed back in and will be managed correctly. Not like a Lejeune situation which was absolute insanity.

    Adam,

Lejeune was ridiculous, but we’ve had many more over the years that were equally as bad. Pardew was a stickler for rushing back players from injury only to lose them again the next game. It must be a British dinosaur manager thing.

Yeah we’ve always seemed to be bad at managing injuries, guess that’s what happens with certain dinosaur managers like you say! Probably think the best cure is to ‘run it off’ haha

The Lejeune one still sticks with the most, pretty sure he even mentioned it himself in an interview and was shocked that he kept being asked to play or something similar. Then he was basically told he wasn’t needed anymore. Horrible treatment of a defender who would probably be flourishing under Howe in fairness.

    Adam,

Yeah, next season should be OK for me – it’s been almost 3 years since I’ve seen my parents and the rest of my family in the north east.

BTW, If you’re stuck for somewhere to stay I’ve a free night Marriott voucher that expires end of June (which I’m not going to use, I’ve also got 9 suite night vouchers that also expire in June)

Happy to help any fellow toon fans wherever I can 🙂

Damn you if only you let me know earlier, already booked a non-refundable place now! 🙂 haha thanks for the offer anyway man! Glad to hear you should be able to make it out next season, i’m sure a fair few on here would be happy to meet you for the match too, so should be good all round!

    Darnik

Just have to look at how Schar is now back to his best, I think Lejeune wasn’t quite as good on the ball as Schar but was better defensively. So i’m sure he would have been playing to his best potential under Howe too. Schar and Lejeune were very similar in my eyes, not much between them at all.

I predicted a positive 17 points as well!

Big ask but why not eh?

Nobody would of guessed us picking up 19 points out of 21, so what we do know is what we thought was impossible is possible.

Think I’m the past we rushed back players through necessity not saying the right thing to do but our lack of depth has almost always fired out hand to push the boundaries and in the long run has backfired … we all want to see the best players on the pitch but not at the players long term fitness and health … the squad has now proved we can cope when being without arguably our best players Wilson Maxi Tripps – I would add that taking the spine out of most teams say Liverpool lose Salah VVd and Mane they would not be the same but manage to cope because of the depth of their squad

Dazzler from previous thread you are right regarding his wages but at some point we will have to pay someone a fair bit more than the rest as the PIF will want a really big name going forwards to pique more interest in Saudi in us.

I really rated Lejuene until he got bruced then he seemed miles off the pace, but if I’m being honest I think we’ll be signing better quality in the summer anyway so I’m not that bothered lol

Think I went for a 14 point total from the remaining games which would give us 45 points, amazing achievement if attained considering where we were pre Christmas.

    Adam/Darnik,

Definitely agree with you both there. Lejeune was head and shoulders our best CB when fit. The problem with him, and similar to Fernandes and Schar, was that he was a modern, cultured CB and an not old school “if in doubt, kick it out” type. Bruce had no understanding of how to get the best out of players like them so binned them off or benched them.

Amazing that a professional CB couldn’t coach a CB when becoming a manager when you think about it.

I have us picking up 13 points. I think we will have back to back defeats against Liverpool and City as they will be going guns blazing for the title still at that stage and will prove too strong for us.

I think we beat Leicester, Palace and Norwich and draw the rest.

Sunday also depends entirely on which Spurs turns up.

Having read what Jamaal said about the squad being told they were Championship quality and Rafa stating that after many games in all fairness that wasn’t the best mindset to send your players out with. Don’t care whether he was playing mind games with Ashley or not to belittle your own squad and give them an inferior complex is shocking. So glad we have Howe now who would never stoop to those levels or the sheer buffoonery of his previous incumbent.

Lol so sad but so true, people looking at us from the outside called us for the apparent agenda we had against him, did any of those people ever apologise when it came out that he was only training (cough) his players 3 days a week, or that during international breaks he was off on his jollies, look around now at the confidence of both players and supporters all due to actual Training happening

I read the crap that largely filled last nights blog and finally think it’s time to say something.

A large part of the aggro was aimed at a supposed gang like association with one of 2 distinct parties. I can only say WTF? Have we become a bunch of 7 year olds? Have we got to be friends with one or the other? – bloody stupidity abounds.

I like Mund and have conversed with him for a long time on and off here, he’s a thoroughly nice bloke.

I like Jail and have conversed with him for a long time on and off here, he’s a thoroughly nice bloke.

The fact is they don’t see eye to eye on many issues. That doesn’t mean me or anyone else should feel the need to take “sides” it’s bloody nonsense.

My views from time to time coincide with one or the other of their views. – end of, no need for arguments, name calling, joining gangs, taking sides, they can fight their own battles and they’ve both proved that many times over the years, the rest of us should but out, neither of them need “pals” to back them up or fight their corner and neither of them deserve the “pile ons” that sometimes ensue.

So, what I’m saying, is grow up, act like adults and leave both Mund and Jail/Raj alone to fight their own battles as it’s nowt to do with any of the rest of us.

I repeat, I consider them both friends and their views are their views, neither right or wrong, simply views that should be respected by all, discussed and argued over, absolutely but not name calling rabid rants and pile ons that reduce this blog to the worst aspects of the playground.
