Earlier in the week, Reims’ president Jean-Pierre Caillot revealed that Hugo Ekitike would be encouraged to move this summer if the club received an offer similar to Newcastle’s in January.
While not naming The Magpies directly, he alluded to rejecting a €35m and stated that would not be the case during the next window. Here is some of what Caillot said about the teenager’s future:
“In Hugo’s case, he would waste time staying with us.
“We refused an offer of €35m this winter, which is a lot of money for a club like ours.
“That money will be used to grow and improve the club.
“Hugo will be allowed to go, and he’s probably going to leave.
“There wasn’t a big club that didn’t inquire for him.”
90min is reporting that a £30m deal is close and could be structured as a loan with an obligation to buy which would be beneficial to Newcastle, whose summer budget has been reported at £60-80m. This would allow Newcastle to add a more experienced striker and a center-back among other targets.
However, as Caillot suggested, there are other clubs after the young striker. According to 90min, they include Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Wolves, and West Ham United. The outlet’s sources are saying Newcastle lead the chase and are close to reaching an agreement.
This would be a great way to kick off the summer after deadline day drama saw the move fall apart. Newcastle’s persistence may pay off in the end with the promising Frenchman being one of our first summer additions.

I’m with you on Lingard, he was a no brainer win win low risk for both parties in the January. He wants a huge pay day and I think we can afford to set our sights elsewhere, us if we get this Pacquets, where does he actually fit in?

Comment #7That Hjodberg seems a pretty important player for Spurs, not sure why they’d sell him for £30M?

Comment #15I think 35M is far too much for him. He hasn’t pulled up any trees since January. His pace is also a worry, you need Pace in the Prem if you play in the forward positions (that’s a generalisation, but I definitely think we need it in our attack). I thought at the time 35M was crazy money for a kid in his first season, and they were wanting to take us for more. Now the kid’s goals have dried up the chairmen wants to sell for what we offered in Jan. They’ll be lucky to get 15M for him. As is the case with other players we’ll go in for, we’ll offer overly decent fees, they’ll reject, trying to take the piss, then we’ll move on and they’ll sell the players for half our original offer.
