Earlier in the week, Luke Edwards tweeted that Newcastle were hoping to add four to six players this summer. However, that number is dependent on the success of offloading fringe members of the squad.
It does appear that at least four players will be added with a striker, a wide attacker, a center-back, and a left-back (if Matt Targett’s purchase option is not taken up) as the probable additions.
Edwards has identified some of the players that could make way in his latest report in The Telegraph. He believes Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow, Federico Fernandez, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick and Dwight Gayle have all been made available.
Interestingly, Edwards is also reporting that Sean Longstaff could be leaving his hometown club. The Geordie has so far refused to sign a new deal despite Eddie Howe’s attempts to retain him. The Times reported last week that Sean has been offered a 4-year contract.
Longstaff wants more playing time and is unlikely to any guarantees from Howe. The 24-year-old has been the fifth-choice midfielder this season behind Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton.
While Howe has three midfielders in his system, Sean has seen precious few minutes on the pitch this year. He made just his fourth league start of 2022 at the Etihad this past weekend. Though he will likely get the nod in the final two matches with Shelvey and Willock out through injury.
If Sean does leave, Howe will almost certainly look to add another midfielder this summer. Jeff Hendrick and Isaac Hayden have been made available and Matty Longstaff may need another seasoning out on loan before he is ready for the Premier League.

Comment #6Adam – I don’t know Lingard personally but he’s got a hell of a lot of experience in the Premier League, in Europe, and for England. The wages he gets paid will be dependent on what clubs are willing to pay him, it’s as simple as that. I’m sure he’ll command a decent wage based on his experience but the figures bandied around are pure speculation.

Comment #12Oh look…Mund proves that the media are often talking bollox. What a surprise.
We’ll know if Sean Longstaff is staying or going when the club announce it. Until then, the journo’s know as much as you or I do.
Same goes for Lingard. It’s not dead in the water unless Howe doesn’t want him or another club officially signs him.

Oh I don’t doubt that and not attempting to dismiss his experiences at all. Just that from a squad point of view, I think i’d be a little niffed if someone who has barely done anything all season, came in and was instantly a top earner after i’ve busted my ass all season to help the club stay up. That’s what I mean by it and I wouldn’t blame any player if they felt that way a bit. Howe seems very very keen on the squad all being happy and having a good harmony, as he’s said many times. So I just want that to continue and see someone like Lingard joining on high wages potentially harming that.
Howe will know if that’d happen or not better than me though so ultimately would trust his call on it.

Comment #14the problem with both of them is they cant run, there isnt much talent to see, how the hell they managed to get into the first team amazes me mund to be honest
as you say time will tell but think the clubs wasting there time really on both of them, anderson in the reserves is a much better prospect them both of them combined id promote him ahead of them two headless chickens

Comment #16So it seems Eddie has been open and frank to Longy about his chances of game time in the future should he sign on. It is however pretty obvious, what with where we are heading hopefully!
I’m very confident that Eddie could improve Longy and get the performances out of him when he needs him.
But Eddie also knows he can pretty easily draft in another Longy type for the interim if needs be.
Really important for Longy where he goes next and hope he does well. Eddie seems the type of guy that would point Longy in the right direction about the sort of clubs he should be looking at if he wants to play every week. I reckon top half champo clubs looking to push on for promotion is where Longy needs to get involved in.
All the very best to the lad if he does one.

No to Lingard. He did ok at West Ham -but I do not think he would be a good fit at SJP.
If I recall correctly he has been at Man u since he was 9 years old. So he will be well indoctrinated by his surroundings – and thus a difficult fit elsewhere.
No to him – I note your closet Man U and Bindippers fans like him – says it all.

Comment #18When we get to the 1st of June and beyond we will hear about the sponsorships.
Ashley had clauses in till this date and under those terms and conditions nothing can be announced until 1st of June and beyond.
It will be Saudi Golf

Comment #19Adam – I honestly don’t think it matter what they’ve done before, it just matters what they do next. If Lingard comes in on £100kpw and replicates his West Ham form, then everyone will be happy. If he does an ‘Owen’ then that would be a mistake by Howe and the recruitment team. I’ve got to assume that there’s a much higher chance of the former than the latter if the club bring him in so I’m not worried.

I think that ship has sailed. Ironically the best manager to have got £50M for him would have been Bruce, maybe he can persuade the WBA owner to stump up the cash and buy him a gaff less than an hour from the training ground 😀

I can’t wait for the summer to see how they deal with the cluster foot Ashley left behind. I bet he was praying we went down. He’s probably looking at Chelsea selling for £4B and absolutely spewing he sold what he thought was going to be a championship club for £300M

I reckon his stats are possibly over inflated.
a) he dibbles with ball and beats players 1-2 and 3
b) he checks back and pauses, letting the 3rd player catch him
c) he dribbles back the way beating players 3-2 and 1
2 dribbles, 6 players beaten, who’s bothered if the ball goes anywhere after that? :0)

He got more than he deserved. If he’d actually just let it be run as a normal club he would have got more for it and we would have been starting from a much better position to catch up.
