Earlier in the week, Luke Edwards tweeted that Newcastle were hoping to add four to six players this summer. However, that number is dependent on the success of offloading fringe members of the squad.
It does appear that at least four players will be added with a striker, a wide attacker, a center-back, and a left-back (if Matt Targett’s purchase option is not taken up) as the probable additions.
Edwards has identified some of the players that could make way in his latest report in The Telegraph. He believes Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow, Federico Fernandez, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick and Dwight Gayle have all been made available.
Interestingly, Edwards is also reporting that Sean Longstaff could be leaving his hometown club. The Geordie has so far refused to sign a new deal despite Eddie Howe’s attempts to retain him. The Times reported last week that Sean has been offered a 4-year contract.
Longstaff wants more playing time and is unlikely to any guarantees from Howe. The 24-year-old has been the fifth-choice midfielder this season behind Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton.
While Howe has three midfielders in his system, Sean has seen precious few minutes on the pitch this year. He made just his fourth league start of 2022 at the Etihad this past weekend. Though he will likely get the nod in the final two matches with Shelvey and Willock out through injury.
If Sean does leave, Howe will almost certainly look to add another midfielder this summer. Jeff Hendrick and Isaac Hayden have been made available and Matty Longstaff may need another seasoning out on loan before he is ready for the Premier League.

I think the only reason Longstaff doesn`t get a decent run of games is the same reason Hendrick didn`t while he was here, he just is not good enough.
If Longstaff was as effectve as Joe or Bruno he would get a decent run of matches, but he isn`t.

Agree with that I think the thing with ASM is he divides opinion so much but he can be much better if he applied himself a bit of hard work in closing down would work wonders
When he comes out with stuff like i want to be this and that well that’s fine to have that about you but he’s not really worked on his game seems to be getting worse at times
“He will pass when he has better players” he has Bruno and Targett available at all times and still doesn’t use them!Still chooses to run into walls of players rather than pass
It is an interesting debate but I expect within 3 years he will be back in France or at an Everton or newly promoted team thinking what might have been

Suspect that you are right I think the biggest things he lacks are pace and awareness of surroundings
By the time he’s getting the ball the other team knows he’s going to take a touch and he ends up in trouble

SL is a liability under pressure, his lack of pace could be compensated if he could read the game well and is cool under pressure, but he does neither.
Some fans are saying he is top half champo standard, bearing in mind if he was at Forest, who may be promoted into the PL he could end up benched again .
I think maybe top half lge one with view of getting promoted into the champo, at best.

Comment #95Basically SL had some great games under Rafa and was talked about as £30M. Rafa left and he didn’t play well and Bruce got the blame. He’s had about seven months under Eddie H and obviously hasn’t impressed. Make of that what you will.

Comment #96I don’t know whether SLobby was Bruced but he certainly doesn’t seem to have improved much and as WL said his lack of pace is a worry, I personally would let him go now as let’s face it he’s not really the future is he?

Comment #100I probably sound a bit ruthless when i mention certain players atm, but there simply is no room for sentiment now, if our owners want to mix it with the best then players like SL and Maxi just don`t cut it in my view.
I thank you for your services lads but it`s time to get serious and move on.

ASM could gan by Beardsley as if he wasn’t there, then run in to a brick wall.
If Beardsley had the baal,he would see dafty coming, then make a killer pass with the outside of his boot.. Footballing brain.. simples.. :D:

Comment #105Longstaff had some good games when he came into the team because he was an unknown quantity and his weaknesses were not exploited. But at this level it doesn’t take long to be found out by opposing coaches and players and now he is easily nullified. As people have said, no acceleration, dwells on the ball, only sees the obvious pass etc. It wasn’t Bruce that set him back, it was his own limitations

Comment #109I never rated The Longstaffs, yes Sean had a few good games, but never seen anything in Matty, mind they could both score goals, but could never see what others saw. I would have loved to see them progress though, John Anderson used to rave about Matty, and said he was a far better footballer than Sean.
So really it’s up to the two of them, to stop listening bro the hype, and try to make it somewhere else.
I would just love to see them get better.

Comment #112Lee Charnley Bunga Party – Quite simple really but if ASM applied himself and maximised his own ability then he wouldn’t be playing for us, he’d be at one of the top clubs in the world actually doing what Mane does for Liverpool. The reason he isn’t doing that is because he’s not as good as Mane, despite what he apparently said to French media.
But just because he’s not as good as Mane, doesn’t mean he should attract as much flak in my opinion. He’s still more of a threat than any other winger we have.

Comment #118Mavericks sadly don’t have a footballing brain and that’s why we call them mavericks.
I don’t expect Maxi to adjust and become the player we hope he can be but I’d say if it was a choice? I’d stick with him for another season or at least until January.
If anyone can transform Maxi its Eddie and his team. If he can transform Big Joe in the way that he has, then anything is possible.
