Newcastle supporters have a bit of an extra wait before the lads take the pitch again. Arsenal come to St. James’ Park on Monday evening as Newcastle will try to get back to winning ways after the two recent defeats.
The Magpies weren’t dreadful in the 1-0 loss to Liverpool or the thrashing at Manchester City. The gulf in class was evident for all to see and provided a stark reminder that Newcastle have much work to do before catching The Reds or The Citizens.
In a result to forget at Manchester City, Bruno Guimaraes has won another poll as Newcastle’s best player. The midfielder picked up over 40% of the vote. He has cemented himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet.
Monday’s match could be a more realistic opportunity to take down a member of the traditional top six. Though Arsenal have rebounded this season and are in with a very good chance of returning to the Champions League.
They will be on short rest as they travel to Tottenham tomorrow for a critical North London derby. The result of the derby could impact Arsenal’s frame of mind on Monday. A win and they will have wrapped up 4th place. A loss and their mood will be one of desperation.
Newcastle got a boost with the return of Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier last weekend. They improve this squad immensely and a chance for a top ten finish is still in reach. That will be the aim over the final two matches.
Unfortunately, Joe Willock and Jonjo Shelvey will miss the remainder of the season. That could also be the case for Ryan Fraser, who has yet to return to training with his hamstring problem.
We should get a clearer indication of Fabian Schar’s availability this week. He missed the Etihad trip with a knock to his foot. Howe seemed confident that Schar was not lost for the season.
To offset the loss of Willock and Shelvey, young Jay Turner-Cooke has been called up to the first team. Unfortunately, Elliot Anderson is not eligible to play in our final two matches after returning from Bristol Rovers.
Howe will field a very competitive team on Monday. With the help of the Toon Army, Newcastle can hopefully get back to winning ways and eclipse last season’s points total.

Comment #9With Wilson, Trippier and Schar all returning to the starting line-up alongside a bouncing St James’ Park, I think we could get a good result Monday. Arsenal are playing for top 4 so they won’t want to give that up and it’ll be a tough game, but think the feel good factor and big players returning can get us the win.

Comment #12Morning lads apparently we’re not in for Lingard anymore? Who knows what’s true;
Newcastle United will not be looking to sign England international Jesse Lingard because his financial demands are far too high to fit into their wage structure. #NUFC

Comment #15I would always feel uncomfortable giving someone like Lingard 200k a week even on a free transfer
Best we move on if the wage demands are round that range as that’s star player material

Comment #18I hope we find a better replacement, don’t rate Sean Longstaff;
Sean Longstaff could leave the club this summer as he will be out of contract at the end of the season. The 24-year-old has so far refused to sign a new contract offer because he wants to play more regularly than he has done this season. [Telegraph] #NUFC
