Howe Confirms Recruitment Process Is Well Under Way

With a place in the Premier League now booked for next season, the attention of many will turn to the summer window, with Eddie Howe still firmly focused on the season’s final two matches.

But he seemed more willing to discuss the summer plans during his press conference on Thursday.

Howe confirmed that recruitment meetings are well underway on Tyneside with the aim of significantly improving the squad. While Newcastle cannot spend frivolously, Howe will be handed a very healthy budget to accomplish that goal.

The head coach said the following about the challenge that lies ahead in the next window:

“Financial Fair Play does impact what we can do in the summer but it doesn’t mean we’re totally without ambition. We’re well aware that we have to change the squad and we have to make improvements but it’s going to be a difficult balance.

“We’ve sat down and discussed the squad and I think we have a very good vision of where we want to take the team. Now the hard part comes where you have to reshape the squad, both ins and outs, and try to come back with a better squad.”

Newcastle will reportedly target four to six additions this summer. However, to bring in that many will require a significant reduction in the current squad. That is the core issue or ‘hard part’, Howe faces in reshaping his side.

The squad is just too large at the moment. There is no easy fix in paring it down to size. The only player who is out of contract is Sean Longstaff with Howe stating he remains hopeful the midfielder will sign his new contract.

Not only are there three players outside of the 25-man squad but senior players sent out on loan will return this summer. They include Freddie Woodman, Jeff Hendrick, Matty Longstaff, and Kell Watts.

While the summer should be exciting, it could be very bittersweet with some long-time servants making way. Howe added the following about the difficult decisions he faces:

“There are some difficult decisions to be made, and when you look at the numbers in the squad, we are top-heavy. We do have a lot of players, there are players that missed out on the 25.

“But as I’ve said before, when we make decisions on every individual, we try to do it in the right way. No decisions have been made as yet. For me, towards the end of the season, you get the games out of the way, then I’ll be speaking with the players.”

CLINT – The ridiculousness of working class people supporting someone like Farage as one of their own when he was born into a wealthy family, educated at a public school, and worked as a trader in the City just astounds me! He’s a prime example of someone who is doing something for himself.

Not really seen him come out and help fishermen after Brexit has screwed them over have we? Man of the people? Garbage.

    TDS,

But he smokes tabs and drinks pints though, surely that counts for something?

Albeit the pub he was in was clearly in some posh country village, and he’d just got back in with the fox hunting squad.

Nigel Farage is just a posh Tommy Robinson, both absolute scum.

    Clint,

I think he has shown he is fairly ruthless in the past at Bournemouth. The only players he kept around were good enough for the league he was in. My only concern with Howe is his eye for a player, that’s best left to a DOF.

He’s great at coaching and improving what he has on hand, but I am still not convinced of his transfers (at Bournemouth, not here so far)

dazzler – Agreed, both absolute scum, liars, and only it it for themselves.

Drinking and smoking doesn’t mean someone is in touch with working class people and I’d say it’s insulting when people suggest it does! The idea of that being a key part of the identity of working class people is backwards. Working a full time job while worrying about bills increasing and how they can provide for themselves and their family would be more relevant. Nigel Farage has never had to deal with normal things like that.

Haha missed the bus by a long way.

I don’t know whether the leaked shirt is genuine but I was going to put something similar to TDS when I saw Jane mention the link to KSA. The majority owners are Saudi. Why wouldn’t they want to exploit the market in their country irrespective of whether they are separate or not.

    Missed bus repost,

    The kit…..

    There are 2 issues;

    Do you like it? Y/N

    Is it inflammatory? Y/N

Personally, I’m stuck 50/50 on the like/dislike view, not enamoured, but not hating it.

As for the inference part. I’m totally happy with the idea of our 80% owners corporate colours being used to promote their Country along with our club. There will always be a minority of haters who are cuing up to hit us with a stick, the timings irrelevant.

Saudi Arabia are currently huge advertisers of their Country with massive glossy ads being carried by virtually every commercial network. Where are the haters lining up to attack their moral principles in taking the money? GBNews is one of those networks!!

Don’t take our eyes off the big picture. We need to grow our Commercial income massively to spend big money on players and salaries and stay within FFP limitations. Shirt sales worldwide will become a valuable part of that income stream and we need to capitalise on our Saudi owners links within Saudi and get young Saudis wearing our shirts and not Liverpool or ManU ones. If using our owners corporate colours achieves this – good.

The answer to anyone questioning the link to KSA is simply to say “they are the corporate colours of our Owners – PIF”. Beyond that, stuff em. ?

    Totally different situation, here.
He’s been and boned up, took a real big step up in coaching a ‘all eyes on’ club.
Got his crew in, new beginning.
    Money to back his strategy.
This next bit, without a sports director will be telling. I feel a bit like you… what’s he gonna do, who will he source, will he think big enough etc?
But, ya know, I’m liking him so far.
He sees his opportunity, he knows what’s at stake.

    Howay Eddie!

CLINT – they’re often poorly educated and getting by on relatively small margins though. They’re perfect examples of people who are disaffected, who see their livelihood being more and more challenging, and they’ve latched onto an apparent “hail Mary pass” from someone who claims it would make things better. Farming and fishing communities have been largely ignored and have been struggling for decades really, but it’s crazy to think someone like Farage would give a damn about them.

The thing about the fishing industry is that its contribution to the economy and the number of people actually involved is very small compared to the number of headlines it generates.

My politics are also very middle of the road and I don’t think anything has been said that is untrue or even controversial really. That being said, I agree it’s not the right forum for a political chat…but maybe Farage should stay out of commenting on football too.

Couldn’t give 2 hoots about whether it has Saudi colours in it, just think the shirt itself looks cheap and very unimaginative or exciting. Just plain and dull.

Hopefully if it is to be our new away kit, it looks nicer and doesn’t look or feel cheap in person. It’s only a photo or 2 to go by at the moment.

Does that mean our home shirt will be changing too, or just our away kit?

Adamn_92 – I think it’s our 3rd strip? So pretty rare when that has to be worn. I think only in an away game where there’s a clash between our away kit and their home kit. But then, I think there’s the choice of wearing our home strip instead (assuming there’s no clash) so the 3rd strip won’t get many outings and possibly none.

There’s no getting away from our links to Saudi so no point in treading on eggshells around it, if the strip is to become green and white so the 35.9 million Saudi’s like it then so be it. However, it’s minging looking. The Nike Saudi shirt looks smart with their crest watermarked in to the body of the shirt and the sewn on tags. This thing we’re seeing really does look like the type of shirt you’d go out and buy if you were starting a kids Sunday team, ten for £80. At least get it looking smart.

I liked the bloke at Bournemouth, I always thought he seemed like a nice bloke and student of the game. I absolutely love the man at the minute. What he has done in 2022 has been nothing short of miraculous.
