In an exclusive this past week, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported that Newcastle have identified Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Reims’ Hugo Ekitike as the preferred strikers to bring in this summer.
Calvert-Lewin was briefly linked in January. However, his recent injury woes made him an unrealistic option at the time. If Newcastle can agree a fee in the next window, the 25-year-old would be a superb addition.
The information regarding Ekitike was even more positive. Edwards expects the 19-year-old to join in the summer. Newcastle had come very close to signing him in January before he opted to stay with Reims to finish out the season.
90min is today reporting that Newcastle are very confident a deal for the teenage striker will be reached soon. Newcastle have never wavered in their commitment to bring Ekitike in.
The two clubs have stayed in constant dialogue since the deal broke down. Ekitike is reportedly keen on the move and wants to be part of the project underway at Newcastle United.
The Magpies are trying to get Ekitike in on an initial loan with an obligation to buy to offset any Financial Fair Play concerns. This would be a savvy move as another striker, who could cost big money, will also be brought in.
Calvert-Lewin is currently the one being targeted. Though Benfica’s Darwin Nunez and Flamengo’s Gabriel Barbosa are also on the shortlist. Napoli’s Victor Osimhem is likely far too expensive at this point in Newcastle’s rebuild.

Comment #15Farage is probably just kicking up a storm to deflect from his many positive comments on Putin. People like him just say anything if they know it will get them in the spotlight. Bad news is good news to a wannabe demagogue. Wearing Saudi colours is hardly a heinous crime. They should get Howe to wear a robe and the rest of the attire then burn a Union Jack just before kick off just to really pee them off. Only joking of course, but they’re acting as if that’s what happened.

Comment #17I agree with posters stating the third strip will look a lot better when the sponsors are on it. Tad bland for me as it stands, but with sponsors on front and arms I think it’ll look decent. Warming to it I am.

Comment #19Just seems very insensitive. Its hard enough to maintain that, as fans, we support our local team and not the despotic, misogynistic and homophobic regime of Saudi Arabia. If the journo reaction is anything to go by, the team and our travelling fans can expect nothing but the opprobrium of all and sundry wherever this shirt is worn. It represents a triumph of marketing over public relations this and is completely unnecessary.

Comment #21Too much to hope we will boycott it, as there’s plenty of the bloody-minded and ‘I don’t give a toss, me’ cohort who will wear it thoughtlessly just to hold up two fingers.

Comment #22But perhaps this is one opportunity for fans to make that statement to our ultimate owners – it is our club and no, we do not approve. It would be nice to think they would bring out this shirt and no-one in Newcastle bought it.

Comment #23Sav! Or just ordinary football fans who just want to support their team, and like the shirt,
You know football fans that just want to go to matches without all this is the fans fault!
For gods sake will they ever leave us fans alone, to enjoy our football club without all this “it’s the fans fault”.
I’m just sick of it.

Comment #25There’s clearly some amazing potential with this lad for why we are aggressively pursuing him
Nickson has probably got a dossier for the boy since he was about 15
It will take a while for him to grow into English football but once he gets used to the physical side his technique will take over could end up being a bargain

Comment #27The media is agenda driven full stop
This is the world we live in sadly and it will only get worse.
The media are not about truth…
It’s all about what agenda they have and who against.
The bad thing about social media is these opposers can throw out hate all day every day but the good thing is it shows how every single one of the journalists and media companies are the biggest hypocrites on the planet.
Near enough every single one of them have been seen to praise Saudi in one way or another in the past and also spoke about what’s wrong with the money at City? Chelsea etc etc but we get took over by the richest owners around and it all of a sudden becomes the biggest problem.
Absolute jokers and jobsworths of the highest order

Comment #28Cartoon, we’re all sick of it. I’m just suggesting a simple way fans could, if they want, clear this up once and for all. Boycott this shirt. Wear the famous stripes or the blue and gold one. That’s all.

Not sure the team will ever get to wear it in anger, thinking about all the other clubs home colours. Seems like a marketing exercise in KSA to me, make a few quid.
It’s a shame that the Saudi male headdress ‘the gutrah’ most worn colour is red and white chequered. Would have been perfect if it was B&W.

Comment #37We are not owned by the Saudi regime we are owned by Saudi PIF
There is a difference.
If anyone has moral arguments against the ownership that’s down to them and them alone to make that decision but I don’t care one bit and welcome our new Saudi owners and all they bring.
Morals shouldn’t come into it or you basically shouldn’t support football. That’s a a choice tho
