Newcastle Make Preliminary Contact For Portuguese International But Price Is High – Report

A report last week claimed Newcastle were preparing a £15m bid for Manchester United’s Dean Henderson. The 25-year-old has been the only goalkeeping target to hit the headlines in recent weeks.

However, claims are emerging from Portugal of another potential contender. Sport Witness has compiled a few reports that Porto’s Diogo Costa has hit Newcastle’s radar.

The 22-year-old wrestled the number one gloves from Agustin Marchesin last summer after a couple of years as his backup. He was outstanding for the Liga Portugal champions conceding just 22 times with 15 clean sheets in the league.

Costa has risen through the Porto ranks to become one of their stars. He broke into the Portuguese national team in October and is their current number one with 4 caps, including a 1-1 draw at Spain on Thursday.

There is one glaring issue with this link. Costa has a €60m release clause and signed a new contract to 2026 last fall. Newcastle have made preliminary contact with Porto but they are unwilling to come down from his high release clause.

Costa is probably a player Newcastle are keeping track of. Henderson is the number one target should Newcastle try to add a goalkeeper this summer. That will depend on whether Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman can be offloaded.

Mark Douglas reported yesterday that Newcastle are currently targeting four players in Hugo Ekitike, Moussa Diaby, Sven Botman, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. A deal for Ekitike is very close.

There is work to do on the other three with Calvert-Lewin looking like a very distant prospect. There is also a claim from calciomercato’s Daniele Longo on Twitter that Botman prefers AC Milan, who will decide next week whether to bring him in or allocate funds elsewhere.

I can see why we rested Broad vs Aus and West Indies. Obviously not very good as KETS would say

Armenia v Republic of Ireland 2pm

Ireland never won a Nations League match but unbeaten in last 8 matches and have some good players coming through.

Armenia unpredictable lost 9-0 to Norway last time out but beat Romania and Iceland in WC qualifiers last year.

    Peter,

Such a low scoring game, when NZ were 132 all out I thought we weee gonna walk it especially when we were 50 without loss.

Is the pitch not good for batting, but good for bowlers?

Strange if so as Lords has always been a good wicket to bat on?

    TDS,
It will depend on whether we are restricted by FFP or not. If not then getting value from transfers is irrelevant. If so, then we need to try to largely (although not exclusively) stick to players we can profit on. If FFP say we can only spend 200m, and we intend to stick to those rules as I’ve heard some suggest, then if we get one or two sales in the 100m region, we can increase our budget. I wouldn’t suggest this method if we had rubbish scouts as they’d just throw away any profits, but I’d have faith in our scouts that if we sold a half-decent English player (Grealish, Maguire type) for 100m that we would end up with two players of similar quality.

Although I suspect we will cheat the rules, until told otherwise I’ll go off us following them so don’t want us splashing out huge money on older players just yet. Reading between the lines of the transfers so far, they don’t seem like they’re worried about future ramifications. Wood at 30-40m including wages as a 3-months stop gap suggests they’ve got frightening amounts of money to burn.

The way I read Jail’s post was that he offered to pay for NY’s game tickets ‘though it could have been read as flight tickets.

Whatever, I’d suggest that NY wouldn’t have gone to FL if he didn’t want to meet up.
