Newcastle Make Initial Contact For Former Brazil U23 International – Report

The roller coaster continues in Newcastle’s pursuit of Sven Botman. While recent reports from Italy sound promising, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards tweeted last night that his sources are saying nothing is close.

It could be time for Newcastle to start sounding out other targets. The Mail is reporting that Newcastle have made an enquiry for Roma center-back Roger Ibanez. Tottenham are also tracking the former Brazil U23 international.

The 23-year-old is a mainstay in Jose Mourinho’s backline making 51 appearances last term. The center-back joined permanently last summer after a half-season loan from Atalanta for a bargain fee of around £8m.

Ibanez was rewarded for his excellent campaign with a new contract in March to 2025, which contains a £80m release clause. The Mail is reporting that both Newcastle and Tottenham are preparing to test Roma with a £30m bid.

Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and Torino’s Gleison Bremer have also been scouted and could come into play at some point. It appears that Newcastle are laying the groundwork to move quickly if the move for Botman collapses.

Pelicat, a band from Oslo, has released a new song called ‘The Ballad of Faustino Asprillo’ about the former Newcastle United forward. If you are interested, the song can be obtained on various music services here.

Below is a YouTube video of the single.

    [Repost] Back to NUFC,

If we’re to be challenging at the top half of the table we need a more competitive squad, plus Howe has said he wants us to go on a cup run so we’ll need a competitive squad to keep people fresh. Botman may not immediately go into the starting XI as I’m sure BDB will make him fight hard for the position. BDB is 30 now though so will increasingly need to be rested and rotated. Competition is a good thing lads!

From previous, Peter already highlighted and clarified that fact, thanks for the second hand clarification, also appreciated I was not aware why obviously!

That day was an embarrassment to English football. The shocking scenes which I observed could have quite easily led to a fatality(s) or serious injury. Not sure if you missed that one too but Darnik also correctly highlighted the severity of what happened as to why we are playing behind closed doors.

I think within the next ten days we will have several players through the door.

    Thats the spirit Assassins 😎

I think Eddie and the owners will want players in as early as possible to give them all a full preseason with Howe and the squad and be fully integrated into the team.

It’s lazy journalism. They’re putting 2 + 2 together and getting 5. Many of Lyon’s players are looking to leave because they’ve missed out on CL football and then assuming these players will only want to sign for clubs in the CL as opposed to longer term projects like us. If it came down to choosing Spurs or Newcastle, Paqueta is coming to us every day of the week.

    Which way through the door?

Might need one of those revolving jobs if you believe all the reports!

With Target already in the bag I’d be content with 7-8 outgoings and 4 incoming to keep evolving, without losing the core spirit from last year.

As long as we keep upgrading and strengthening positions, the depth of the squad will improve each window, we’re moving in the right direction.

Gleison Bremer should be our #1 priority, not some back up option. We should’ve signed him in January, or at least tried to, and he’s since won Serie A defender of the year playing for lowly Torino. We wasted half of the last transfer window chasing Botman, who now seems to have his heart set on a move to Milan, so we’re _his_ back up option. Let them have him.

A simple and less prickly ‘thanks for the info’ would’ve sufficed.

Surprised not to have seen doscussion of letting go of Chris Wood while he has still decent value. Willing grafter but I’d have thought plays in a wholly different way to Wilson. He did a job while Wilson was crocked but did not deliver a goal. Now he may as well go for all the pitch time he can expect to get. If we don’t we won’t get 15 million for him in a year’s time.
