Nick Pope is not the only Claret Newcastle have taken an interest in. 90min’s Graeme Bailey is reporting that Dwight McNeil and Maxwel Cornet are admired by Eddie Howe and have been asked about.
McNeil has been on Newcastle’s radar for years. The 22-year-old has always been slightly beyond our reach as one of Burnley’s best young players. Newcastle now have the funds to make a run for the winger.
The former England U21 international struggled during Burnley’s relegation campaign. He failed to find the back of the net and provided just one assist. He is a solid player who is rarely injured and could be a decent acquisition if other targets prove a bridge too far.
Cornet impressed in his inaugural Premier League season. The Ivorian joined from Lyon last summer and scored 9 goals in 26 league appearances. He has a release clause of £17.5m with a number of clubs interested in his services.
Interestingly, this report provides a more reasonable valuation for Pope. Some outlets have pegged his price tag at £40m. Bailey reckons the 30-year-old could be fetched for as little as £12m, which would be excellent value.
Pope is likely Newcastle’s primary reason for contacting Burnley. While the question may have been asked on McNeil and Cornet, they are probably further down the shortlist and won’t come into play unless other pursuits end in failure.

Comment #1I would take both cornet and McNeil, not sure where they would fit in, but they are both decent young players.

Give the blog one good reason why Arsenal would be interested in signing Chris Wood?

A response to SirRhosis, in horror films someone always goes into the cellar or loft and it’s usually a bad move! 🙂

Comment #8Would definitely take McNeil. Tricky winger who has an excellent work ethic. Always seemed more than willing to sprint back to help out his team.

We are all entitled to our opinions I’ll never argue that I’m just saying Howe’s praise isn’t an indication of one way or another

Comment #12Adam i think Wood is an absolute pro which is what we needed. He realised this was the deal of a lifetime and would do anything asked of him without question ( who could blame him we would all do the same) Also i know there isn’t a lot of competition but he is NZ captain and we needed leaders on the pitch so that helped. If we had to overspend by £10-15m on one player to achieve a goal ( not getting relegated) he was worth every penny

I get that, I was just saying I wasn’t using it in a sense of just ‘well Howe said he’s good so’. But he pinpointed exactly what Wood was contributing and how it was helping the team. So I think it’s fair to use that specific and explained praise to go with my opinion that he contributed and helped the team.

The fact he’s captain of his national team and had been in relegation battles before, that experience and leadership is a no brainier. Seemed like an incredibly sensible purchase at the time all things considered. Proof is in the pudding and this pudding didn’t get relegated and excelled when he was playing 😀 I think you’re spot on that he seems like a total pro. Got on with what was asked and played his part. Can only thank him for helping us stay up and would have no qualms if he’s a back up option next season.

Have to disagree with you on Dwight McNeil, he’s basically a worse version of Almiron with next to zero end product. I get that he was in a particularly poor Burnley side, but I don’t want us signing wingers for their defensive capabilities – we’ve got Almiron for that.

Comment #21So there you have it.
Wood is Shildon.
Gayle is Easington Colliery
Wilson is Rothbury.
We just need a Bamburgh and an Alnmouth and all will be well.
I’d probs take a Warkworth to be fair.
No Ashingtoon, sit doon!

Comment #22Anyway the Wood debate has been done to death so I’ll stop my input here 🙂
I’ll end it by saying though, that he’s. Newcastle United player. He joined us in a very bad situation where relegation was a real possibility. He was a model pro, done what was asked of him, helped us on a great run and played a part keeping us up.
So I think he at least deserves our respect and to not be labelled as shit or suggested that he hindered us. He played his part in a huge season for us and that should be enough to thank him for his input and get our collective respect imo.

Comment #24Wood is average, but did a job.
We stayed up.
He came thru the door, gave the place a lift, brilliant attitude.
Everything thru the week contributes, not just his effort on match day.
And by the way he did plenty in big games.
Some folk go in like he was a man off.
Granted not a 25million pound player, but who cares about the fee. We are still a prem club. And that is down to Wood to a small degree. All about the team.

It would all depend on the asking price. I’ve seen enough in him personally to suggest he can become a decent player. Great work ethic, can beat a man and has a decent delivery from what I can remember. His stats goals and assists wise aren’t amazing by any means, but I think he’s young enough to improve under Howe.
Depends on the price though. If it’s not too high I’d say he’s worth it. But if it’s too high then it’s an expensive gamble and probably better alternatives out there.
I think he’s decent and there’s more to come from him though.

Comment #31Missed the chuffin bus, with my one footy post!
Wood,
IMO he simply performed a function. That being, that opposing teams did not know how he was supposed to function within the Newcastle set-up and hence they weren’t sure how much attention to devote to him. In that, he upset opponents balance and provided opportunities for our other players to capitalise. Whether, that was effective or not is open to debate, but perhaps our run of results post his recruitment might provide some direction to such debate.
He never set anyone on fire but as I’m not a tactical expert, this is the best I can offer.
Well, that’s a change from my non-footballing posts
