Strengthening The Academy Appears To Be A Top Priority This Summer

Strengthening the academy looks to be a priority this summer after the release of 8 members of the U23s. Among those was local lad Tom Allan who had a memorable debut, his lone appearance, in 2020.

The winger provided an assist in the FA Cup replay against Rochdale. Soon after coming on, he put a perfect ball in for Joelinton. The Brazilian tucked the ball away to make it 4-1.

It was announced last month the 22-year-old would not be retained. He has not had to travel far for his next club as he has linked up with Gateshead on a two-year deal.

Newcastle are in the process of restocking the ranks. Galway United’s Alex Murphy will join the U23s in July. The left-footed defender turns 18 later this month and is a Republic of Ireland U19 international.

George Caulkin of The Athletic reported yesterday that Newcastle have reached an agreement for Kilmarnock’s Charlie McArthur for £350k. The 17-year-old center-back has agreed on personal terms and will hopefully be confirmed soon.

Bristol World has an exclusive revealing that The Magpies have been watching their young prospect Reuben McAllister. The 16-year-old is the son of former defender Jamie McAllister, who had one cap for Scotland.

McAllister is an attacking midfielder who has been monitored by a few Premier League and Scottish clubs. He has risen through the Robins’ ranks and is already playing for their U23s.

Newcastle are also reportedly preparing a bid for Braga’s Roger Fernandes. The winger, who doesn’t turn 17 until late November, has already amassed 10 appearances for Braga. He could be a marquee academy signing should an agreement be reached.

Back to Bazunu. With the general understanding being MC have a buy back clause, that would surely be at least one key reason we didn’t get him.

There’s no way our ownership will do any deals where if a player turns out to be really great then we automatically lose them. I can understand teams with lesser ambition doing that but we just aren’t in that category any more.

Exactly, I agree with that. Not being guaranteed first team football right away may have played a part too, but I think the buy-back included in the deal would have been the main reason we didn’t go for him.

Man City aren’t daft enough to let a top prospect go and not have an easy way of getting him back again.

With Forster going to Spurs I think Bazunu will definitely be challenging for that No.1 spot if he has a good pre-season with The Saints.

delighted we bringing in young talent to develop

i think woods will have a big roll to play for us next season
its not about the 38 league games now its about the cups a squad is needed
we also dont have we not city or fool where we will have the players to unlock defense of a defending and sitting back we need to be smarter and have different options not rely on individual brilliance

even when leading woods can help keep the ball see out games

he dont a great job for us last season i also think we will see a different woods this season after a full preseason and time spent with with howe and our coaching team

Meant to ask you, what happened with the Fantasy Football last season? Did you get bored with it? Or did you forget you had a team on there? Was just curious as it might help us setting up next season’s Head-to head League again.

I suppose we could get in touch with Southampton and lodge a cheeky £20M offer 🙂

That would surely be cheaper than MC’s buy-back clause (ie they can’t activate it to stop us) and an easy £5M profit for the Saints. Bazunu also gets a quick payrise.

    Everyone’s a winner. Except MC.

I watch the MLS quite a bit because it’s usually on when I’m flicking around channels over here. I assume you’re talking about Josef Martínez who plays up front for Atlanta. He’s a canny player but it’s hard to judge how he’d do over here because the quality of the football in the MLS is poor.

He scored 12 in 24 last season and is on 2 in 6 so far this season, so he knows how to find the net but I honestly think he’d struggle in the Premier League. Plus, I’d rather bring in Bruno’s best mate than Almiron’s 🙂

It’s early days; our management knows what it’s doing; we aren’t gonna be held to ransom; even though we have clearly identified of our targets ( and they’re both young enough and have Champions League potential, so we’re fishing in exactly the right pond) neither may come to us, as we’re nowhere near CL class as a team. But time will tell, and there’s plenty of fish in the sea. What a team (management/ownership|) we’ve got!!

I think he’d be less of a gamble than some the club have made, MLS is a decent level now and Miggy made the step up OK, especially sans TGFG! 🙂

I definitely would have preferred having him up front instead of Wood, that’s for sure! But honestly, the standard in the MLS isn’t that great. It’s certainly improved over the last few seasons, but it’s nowhere near the level of the Premier League. New England Revolution is my local team and I’ve been to a few of their games and it just wasn’t the same as watching us at SJP.

To clarify, I was joking about Bruce. He was actually offered a cap near the end of his career but turned it down because he thought it was out of pity (allegedly).

Also to clarify, when I say local MLS team, it’s just under two hours in the car and across into the next state. Still, it’s closer than the two New York teams although they’d probably be more entertaining. I should try and make it to a Red Bulls or NYC game.

Strengthening the academy is the top priority?!

Surely not. Strengthening the team has to be the top priority. And not with Burnley players!

We’re supposed to be competing this year folks.

Spend the money, even spurs have a 150 budget and we’re miles behind them!
