Lille President Feeling The Heat For Lack Of Player Sales

There is news breaking out of France that Lille’s owners have grown frustrated with president Olivier Letang. One of the areas of contention is the lack of progress over player sales.

Le10Sport is reporting that the relationship between Letang and the owners, Merlyn Partners, has deteriorated in recent months. Lille, who won Ligue 1 two seasons ago, only managed a 10th place finish this past season.

Title-winning manager Christophe Galtier left last summer for Nice. He is now being courted to replace Mauricio Pochettino at PSG. Galtier’s replacement at Lille, Jocelyn Gourvennec, had his contract terminated by mutual consent on Thursday.

Lille are now in talks to hire Paulo Fonseca, who was in the early running for the Newcastle job after the takeover. Letang has been excluded from talks with the former Roma manager.

Lille’s finances took a hit after failing to qualify for Europe. The owners believe that player sales are vital for the health of the club. Letang has proven to be a stubborn negotiator pricing Sven Botman and Renato Sanches out of moves.

The report mentions that Letang could salvage his position if he sells Botman and Sanches to PSG rather than AC Milan. PSG have recently been linked with the duo but Newcastle have an excellent offer on the table for Botman.

PSG have the Dutchman on the back burner at the moment as they have set their sights on Inter’s Milan Skriniar. This could all work to Newcastle’s benefit as AC Milan have their own inner turmoil and PSG have other priority targets.

The Athletic reports, “ Raheem Sterling, 27, has been asking people about life in west London”
……he was training at Queens Park Rangers at the age of 10!

Just watching the news and noticed Hugo Boss label has changed. It’s gone back to the 1930’s original when they sold SS, SA and Hitler youth uniforms.

Regarding the article, either it’s not entirely true or the President isn’t the smartest in my opinion. If the owners have said ‘we need to sell players’ then surely the president isn’t going to be pricing them out of sales and moving the goalposts? Surely that’s incredibly dumb and just begging to be fired by the owners? So either if he’s incredibly greedy as well as incredibly dumb, or it’s not entirely true. Imo.

I find it amazing how people can patronize organisations with this history.
But, the press/media fail to call it out at every turn.
Yet, some minor celeb is ripped down for some minor infraction.
    What a world!

Lille are notoriously difficult to negotiate with just like Spurs are. They’d rather cut off their nose than accept good offers and will always try and bleed more out of the buying club

Yeah I’ve heard they’re notorious, but this report is stating that the owners have basically ordered players to be sold. So if the President is pricing players out of being sold, that seems incredibly dumb decision making as he’s basically asking for the sack. Which is why I think he’s either being needlessly risky with his own job for a few extra €’s, or this isn’t 100% the case.

Yeah must be frustrating. I think they’ve done reasonably well being a buying and selling club in the past in fairness. But if the report is true, then not making Europe was maybe something they weren’t expecting and hits them hard financially.

You’re right though, it would be frustrating as a fan to hear that.

Lille have always been a selling club its how they’ve done business for years.

After they won the league last time we bought one of their best in Cabaye.

Many clubs like that around Europe

Hoping against hope that this week finally sees some breakthroughs in the transfer market. Patience is indeed a virtue, though it would be nice for Eddie to have as close to our full compliment of senior players available to him when pre-season kicks off.

That being said, it is likely that some of our transfer targets will go deep into August so it’s going to be a long summer!

Newcastle are closing in on a move for Kilmarnock youngster Charlie McArthur as the academy overhaul continues.

His agent arrived in Newcastle on Thursday and the deal is all agreed.

Just been speaking to Luke Edwards, Apparently were not 100% keen on Paqueta and he is very, very low on NUFC priority list, seems a no goer. Ekitike agent, who is his cousin, is still touting him around other clubs, to try to get more money for himself….
Lille have raised Botmans asking price an extra £7 million and as we know there are politics involved at the club, hope to hear news later this week. Sorry thats all folks, nothing great or exciting, believe him or not. Cheers.
