Price Remains An Issue In Search For A Wide Forward

Newcastle had identified Moussa Diaby as a priority target soon after the season ended in May. However, interest soon cooled after learning about Leverkusen’s valuation of their star winger.

The Sun is reporting that Newcastle were quoted £50m which forced them to quickly drop the subject. They have since been linked with alternatives such as Brighton’s Leandro Trossard, Watford’s Ismaila Sarr, and Leeds’ Jack Harrison.

Newcastle haven’t made an approach for another wide forward as the focus continues to be on Hugo Ekitike and Sven Botman. Those two sagas are heading into yet another pivotal week.

Ismaila Sarr underperformed this past season as Watford dropped back into the Championship. The Hornets still want around £30m for the Senegal international. There is little chance Newcastle will part with that much for the inconsistent winger.

Jack Harrison is an intriguing option as he has proven he can put the ball into the back of the net. However, The Athletic claims Leeds manager Jesse Marsch rates Harrison highly and will only consider bids too large to turn down.

Harrison has just two years left on his contract. A decent offer could put pressure on Leeds if the 25-year-old fancies a move to St. James’ Park. He would be a decent signing but only for a reasonable fee.

Leandro Trossard is entering the final year of his contract with Brighton. Both Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked with the Belgian. His contract situation should lessen his price tag but the competition will be stiff for his signature.

Moussa Diaby is a player who could be worth every bit of £50m. Newcastle have to work within a strict budget of around £80-100m. Hugo Ekitike and Sven Botman would take up a large chunk of that should they be signed.

A player like Diaby, who is now being courted by his former club PSG, is a rare talent that would instantly transform Newcastle. It could be worth signing just four players this summer if he is one of them – Matt Targett, Sven Botman, Hugo Ekitike, and Moussa Diaby.

Forget DCL, seen nothing from him that deserves the price touted.
    Diaby is tho’.

    dazzler,
I’d rather they just scrapped it altogether. How can any club expect to compete with established super clubs with their existing revenues.

I’m not sure why £50M for Diaby is too expensive unless they don’t think he’s worth that.

Don’t think the verdict is out regarding the claims. You also don’t need to worry. Judging by how EPL clubs is very oppose of other clubs having advantages. They will all pressure sanction against Everton if they sniff any wrongdoing.

Really, all the fashionable clubs across europe, in massive debt, should held vack from spending, if ffp meant anything.

Whilst it may be the case that Everton have tested the FFP rules, I’m not convinced the EPL would investigate too rigorously – they may not want to upset that half of Liverpool.

But weren’t there a couple of clubs (Burnley and Watford?) that raised their concerns about Everton’s spending giving unfair advantage and threatened legal action?

Whichever, there’ll be no action completed by July.

If the rumours are true about DCL then surely we must be getting rid of Wood. They’re a pretty similar player in my eye, both need crosses into the box to score headers, neither really run the channel and are both a focal lone point at the top. Can’t see us going into the new season with Wilson, Wood, DCL and Ekitike.

I think it’s helpful though. Small clubs will never have the financial power to beat big clubs regardless there is FFP or not. With FFP, it restrict the big clubs spending massively. I thought about the role of debts plays, I’m guessing losses under debts owned for each financial year only accounted for debt paid and interest paid. I can ask an accountant if you want. That is why debt don’t play a big role short term, long term it does though if debts keep mounting like Barcelona and Real Madrid. Why you think it’s not helping?

Exactly my point, they get special treatment on the back of lfc, who get special treatment over massive debt.

Doubt there’ll be any investigation, at all.

£50m seems bang on the money for a young creative player like Diaby. Don’t understand why we’d view that as too expensive? If we want players of his quality then that’s the going rate really.

If the report is true obviously. I’d be surprised if we bawked at that price for a player like Diaby.

if we get Diaby then they will need a DCL or his type in the middle to put the crosses in the back of the net. Re wood i think he is a great lad and a model pro but may have already served his purpose. The real issue is i don’t think anyone of us believes Wilson can go a whole season un injured so we have to do something. Even Barcelona were finally found out trying to play a false 9

DCL is more similar to Wilson than to Wood in my opinion. While DCL is very canny in the air he’s more of an off-the-shoulder kind of striker who makes late runs to the post as opposed to Wood who is more of a physical CF.

In any case, DCL is an upgrade on Gayle but not necessarily better than Wilson when both are fit, and for the money touted, I’d prefer we look elsewhere. The obvious caveat being that I trust Howe and Ashworth to do what’s best for the team.

Wingers and forwards are notoriously hard to get good value in the market for so it will be a case of stumping up the cash or holding out for better value deals. Let’s wait and see.

This Debt thing is interesting, as I also though about it’s role in FFP. How debt is accounted for each financial year. If anyone is an accountant or know one? I’ll ask my accountant friend but not sure if there difference between British and Singapore practice.

Tyran i think the debt comes from leveraged buy outs mainly. i.e individual “A” buys the club for “x” then when he gets the club makes the the club borrow “x” and pay him back. Thus they have paid nothing for the club but technically still own the club but now with the big debt. Thats where all the bother is coming from when they cant service the debt by then going on a spending spree above their means which the owners loan the club the cash in the form of more Debt

Like I mention earlier, I can claim all the petrol, bills and customer relations expenses I want from my company. It up to my company to judge which of them are legit and which of them need more solid proof to back them up. The verdict is not even out yet and so many are judging them.
