Freddie Woodman Joins Preston North End On A Three-Year Deal

Newcastle United have confirmed Freddie Woodman has joined Preston North End on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old had been with Newcastle for nine years.

Woodman joined Newcastle from Crystal Palace in 2013. He ends his time at St. James’ Park with 9 appearances, including 4 in the Premier League. His contract was due to expire next summer.

Freddie has signed on at Deepdale for the next three years. He’s an outstanding addition for the Lilywhites. Woodman has proven to be a top Championship shot-stopper from his two seasons on loan with Swansea.

This is what Freddie told pnefc.net about moving to Preston:

“I’m absolutely delighted. It’s been a while trying to get this over the line, but I’m delighted to be here and I feel very honored to be joining such a fantastic football club and a football club that’s going in the right direction.

“I spoke to the manager, not that he had to sell the football club to me, but the way that he works, he’s very passionate and he spoke very highly of the club.

“Obviously I knew Marshy [Mike Marsh] coming here. He played a big part in me picking Preston over other clubs that I had offers from.

“But also myself, I’ve played against Preston and I’ve never had an easy day at Deepdale, and I want to come here and give these fans something that they deserve.”

Preston’s manager Ryan Lowe, who managed Magpie Kell Watts during his loan spell at Plymouth, is delighted to have Woodman in his ranks. Here is what he said about his new keeper:

“We were aware Freddie wanted a new challenge and I’m really pleased we’ve got it done.

“We’ve beaten off some competition for Freddie as he’s seen what we’re trying to build here at Preston North End.

“We feel he’s going to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship.

“His attributes are playing out from the back and his goal saving of course, so he’ll be a top player for us and we’re really excited to start working with him.

“Marshy’s [Mike Marsh] worked with him before with England and with Swansea for two seasons, so when he’s telling you to sign him it becomes a no brainer.”

Preston finished 13th in the Championship last term. Woodman should have a clear path to the starting eleven as Daniel Iversen has returned to Leicester City after his successful loan spell. The Dane started all 46 league matches last season.

We wish Freddie the best of luck and hope he shines at Deepdale. It would be great to see a historic club like Preston North End get back to England’s top flight with Freddie in goal.

Hopefully mate. I think they will wait a wee while before going in for him but surely the owners must see the advantage of such a move

Last 10 years I meant. I can only think of Eriksen, De Ligt and Frenkie de Jong

Good luck to Freddie, a new chapter in his career and hopefully he does well. It just wasn’t meant to be for him at nufc, sometimes it’s like that.

Pope is definitely a good move by the club, someone who is far more capable of continually challenging dubravka, than Darlow was, if he does in deed leave for pastures new elsewhere.

I was on warfarin for years to treat my ATF, it was a real pain as the INR levels had to be tested on a regular basis and they went up and down like a Norwich team.

Now on Rivaroxaban and don’t need to have regular testing, if any one else on the blog has to take it for similar reasons then talk to your GP they won’t change it unless you do.

We got Saint Maxi, looks like we’re going to sign a Pope, all we need now is a Jesus and a Mohammed and we’ll be unbeatable!

    Good grief,
My sincerest apologies for the repost but I missed the bus by more than a couple of strides 😮
“It was on BBC Newcastle about Pope so must be looking good. Keepers are in their absolute prime at 30 and if Pickford wasn’t Southgate’s darling we’d have the England number one. He’s got at least another four years with us as number one and Dubs at least another couple of years here. That gives us plenty of time to sort the academy out and bring in some top class youth to be here long term”

To answer Tom’s question on the previous page there is no what we would get 5 or 10M for Darlow. Sure he is under contract until 2025 but transfermarkt has his value at £2.25M so we would maybe get £3M if a couple of clubs interested.

Interestingly though transfermarkt also has Woodmans value at £8M but I don’t think they took into account he is in the last year of his contract, it is often heaving weighted based on age and he is only 25. I would guess we got between £1-3M for Woodman.

It’ll be interesting to see how Dubs responds to us signing Pope. Will it spur him on to do better and keep his place? Or will he feel that his position is under threat? I’m sure Eddie will give them both a fair chance to perform in pre-season and prove who should be in the starting eleven for our first league game.

    TTT,
Do you think as much as that for Freddie, be nice if it was, I’d have thought more £500K given a year left. £3M for Darlow would be canny as well.

I reckon £1m max for Woodman and probably the same for Darlow. Just need to clear the decks a bit.

Gayle, Fede, Hendrick, Clark. We’ll do amazing just to get these off our books without subsidising the deals.

I reckon £10m if we’re lucky for Almiron, £7m Lascelles, £2m Manquilo (out of the ones that have been mentioned as leaving).

Careful what you say about the warfarin, as it appears to be one of Tuff’s trigger words. He’ll snowflake out and accuse you of being a murderer. For someone who calls himself Tuff (misspelled the word ‘tough’?) he seems to be easily triggered. 😀

I’d say 500k sounds about right for woodman. I’ll be surprised if it’s any more than that. If it is, we’ve done well.

Raj – I admit I was being a tad optimistic with Woodman but I do think over £1M as there were numerous clubs interested in him.

Sythe, yeah I am in for fantasy league. When I checked it I have played before but several seasons ago now.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how Pope plays with a different style of football in front of him. Being in the goalkeeper’s union I’m always extra supportive of keepers.

I don’t think PNE would have been able to shell out too much for Woodman, so I doubt we got that much for him. Good luck to the lad though. He did well for Swansea when he was there.

A keeper seems to be a position where a great deal of them just accept their lot as back up and that they’ll always be just that. Hopefully if Dubs is too be that guy then his own personal pride and motivation inspires him to keep pushing Pope for the number one jersey. I just can’t see us paying £10M for Pope and his WC aspirations to be told he’s sitting on the bench. Maybe Eddie H will give Dubs the chance to keep it until he makes a mistake. Time will tell I suppose.

Pope for anything from £10-20m is fantastic business,Dubs No 2 now surely..
After Pope has an outstanding half season for us,T Rex finds himself at No 2 spot in the England set up..Double whammy or what? 😀

I’d be well pleased if we do get Pope signed up. I had him in my FFL team last season and I won the league I was in! Sadly I have to admit that I finished bottom as well as I was in a league of ONE!

Anyway I felt Pope never let me down and I’d pleased to have him onboard the good ship “Toon”

I respect Darlow and wish him well where ever he signs for.

Pope played in every minute of every game last season, bar Leeds and Man U away, where he missed both games entirely. So he seems to have a good injury track record.

Tyran i agree it is and his confidence to come and get the ball at corners will help. i just don’t think we are built for a high line with Dan B and potentially he who shouldn’t be named at the centre of our defence for the ball over the top

I started out as a LB but then I had a growth spurt and got chucked in goal, where I played until my back and knees gave in. I wouldn’t stand a chance these days playing out from the back because I’ve got two left feet, or I should say two right feet (because I’m left footed).
