It looks like it will be Nick Pope next through the door at St. James’ Park. After Luke Edwards broke the news that an agreement was very close for the 30-year-old, The Athletic’s David Ornstein is reporting an agreement in principle has been reached.
Pope is now set for a medical with the deal expected to be completed by the end of the week. Ornstein does not cite the amount of the fee but Edwards reported earlier today it was around £10m, which is good business for an England international in his prime.
Pope’s arrival will also be accompanied by some sad news as Freddie Woodman looks set to depart after nine years on Tyneside. The 25-year-old is very close to clinching a move to Preston North End as revealed by The Athletic earlier today.
Newcastle’s pursuit of both Sven Botman and Hugo Ekitike continues to be clouded in uncertainty. After a promising update from the Chronicle on Ekitike, Luke Edwards countered that talks with the player’s representatives have gone quiet over the past week.
The hope of having most of the summer business done by the start of preseason next month looks very unlikely. However, Nick Pope will be an excellent addition as he looks set to follow the reliable Matt Targett as our next summer signing.

Comment #2Good signing if we get him.
Dubs is not as good as he used to be. Pope will command the box and will not be fearful in collecting high balls. So that is a plus.

Comment #6On Luke Edwards – I think a lot of people have an unnecessary and uncalled for bee in their bonnet about him. Saying he’s anti toon or click bait poster. I think that is completely wrong. I’ve followed all the main journos reporting on the toon for decades and I have to say he is one of the most reliable. No journo is infallible in their reports but what he says about Botman and Ekitike, I am inclined to believe.

With all due respect mate that is simply not true.
Edwards is not one of the most reliable and the fanbase didn’t just turn on him, he made that happen all by himself.
The reason the majority don’t like him is he was filmed saying he loves to wind the fanbase up and gets a kick out of it…
That’s one of the main reasons.
You talk about him being reliable…?
Let’s not forget Henry Mauriss but the most important factor is when he told us all that Ashley took the club off the market and he won’t be selling to the Saudis. The Saudis had gone according to him…
I think it was only a few weeks later the takeover happened…
Edwards is despised because of his own actions

Comment #9Only concern with Pope is his distribution or rather lack of it. Years of hoofing it at Burnley will have done him no favours playing out from the back. Should have been all over Bizunu for only 15M.

He’s admitted to enjoying winding our fan base up which is where a lot of it stems from, add to that he said the Saudis had walked away , he’s never going to get much respect from a lot of fans

Comment #12Odd that Lee Ryder and Luke Edwards have gone head to head on this. They obviously trust where the info is coming from and you’d assume one of them is utterly wrong. However they both could be right.
Ekitike’s agent tells the club he’s prepared to cut short his holiday If he gets the assurances about playing time he wants and won’t answer any calls unless his agent tells him it’s with reference to those assurances.
If Eddie doesn’t want to commit to this and pulls the plug then by default we must also be in for someone else, deemed better than Ekitike and they’re confident of getting him!
Just my opinion of course 😆

Glad to read you’re out the hospital and good luck with your recovery,
To aid your recovery I recommend the kebabs with everything on from the ‘German Doner Kebab’ takeaway chain. After a wee bit of research it appears there is one in the Derbion shopping centre on Floor 2.
Get round there when you’re back on your feet. I am certain you’ll enjoy them.

Apart from passing, Pope aced alot other top GK in saves, dealing with crosses and most importantly sweeper role.

Mr Tuff re previous bus. Where did that come from? I thought Lesh lightened the mood in response to Tom’s good news with a pretty good pun. One I might have made myself. It’s not a threat mate, just a joke. Not to your personal taste maybe?

Comment #22A good signing in my opinion.
The one thing I do think though is that if Pope does get the no 1 jersey then that could spell the beginning of the end for Dubs. He also has his international place to consider so come January or next summer he may well look to move on if he doesn’t get much gametime. In the meantime though it means we have 2 reliable ‘keepers.

I’m still thinking and hoping Paqueta will come pal. Players must talk and info will spread around in that fraternity, but when it comes to transfer info that Journo’s get, it very rarely comes from players, they seem pretty tight about that shit. Wonder if Ekitike has learned of a Paqueta deal in the offing with us and he’s asked where he stands. Interesting, but it’s turning into a bit of saga!!!
Doesn’t seem like the hacks have a source at Lyon as Bruno came out the blue.

Yeah, West ham fell away pretty badly at the end of the season after being in the running for top 4. Maybe Europe took its toll so their fans are probably worried that we get in the way of their strengthening and also that we could be challenging them next season.

Comment #35Pope for the rumoured £10m fee is absolutely cracking business by us if true.
We’re getting an England international with bags of PL experience for a steal. He’s better and younger than Dubs (though some may argue he’s comparable) and in any case, it drastically increases the overall quality of the squad.
Cracking work from Ashworth and Nickson right there.

Comment #40Mund- You really are the man to go too on here!
I agree on Luke Edwards. He is despised simply because he might as well be working on the Show biz page for all he knows about football and The Toon.
He professed a while ago to not knowing what a false nine was. Apparently when he got the gig colleagues at The Telegraph pooled together to buy him Michael Cox’s The Mixer.
Don’t let the bastar…get you down you’re doing a great job.
Onwards and upwards.
