Poll – Who Will Be Newcastle’s Number One Goalkeeper Next Season?

If everything goes as planned, Nick Pope will sign along the dotted line and become a Newcastle player sometime tomorrow, once he passes his medical.

There have been lots of discussions about whether he will be able to dislodge Newcastle’s current number one – 33-year-old 30 times capped Slovakian International Martin Dubravka, who was signed for just £4M from Sparta Prague three years ago.

Martin has played 130 times for Newcastle and seems to thrive on competition, so it will certainly be interesting to see who Eddie Howe picks as Newcastle goalkeeper for our first game at home to Nottingham Forest on August 6th.

30-year-old Nick Pope has played 155 times for the Burnley first team and 6 times for England.

So who would you choose as Newcastle’s number between the two 6ft 3ins tall International goalkeepers?

Who Do You Think Will Be Newcastle's First Choice Goalkeeper Next Season?

Certainly, goalkeeper will not be a weak link for us next season, as it was at the beginning of last season – until Dubravka returned to action following injury.

In the first 14 games of last season that Dubravka missed, we had no wins and conceded 30 goals: in Dubravka’s first start at home to Burnley in our 15th game, we won 1-0 – our first win and first clean sheet of the season.

So two top goalkeepers fighting it out for who is between the sticks at Newcastle next season has to be (very) good for the side.

What do you think?

50 mill for Ivan Toney, yikes! I always argue that it’s only 1 in 100 that can handle the giant gulf between the reserves and the 1st team, and so playing the kids just isn’t really on in the EPL, and particularly at Newcastle where the pressure is so intense, unless your academy is really top notch, but you’d have to say, we did get that one wrong.

Jail, I never said he tweeted it. He said it in a newspaper interview. It also says it will be difficult as other (‘bigger’) teams in for him.

I added the ‘bigger’, but that was the inference. It seems we are asking about these types of players which is good enough for me, as one or two might come through.

I do find it a little ironic when a player someone on here likes, and then signs (or is looking likely to sign) for another club, they say something like, ‘We should have been in for him’, or ‘We have missed out there’. Who is to say we weren’t in for him? It’s quiet about transfers now because the club is so much more professional than previous and the ‘leaks’ have seemingly been plugged.

Ashworth must be earning his corn right now,I would have loved to be a fly on the wall, when he picked up Dwight Gayles contract.. 😆

Bruce should have some of his severance pay taking off him,for this alone….

Wonderful gesture but please make sure they send you pictures that can be shared on the blog. Would make a great article for Ed/Neil!

Not sure what you mean Jail. There are direct quotes in that link from Romano, as far as I can see. I am not spending all evening on it as my German isn’t that good 🙂

Just thought I would share as it looks like we are asking about those types of players. I think it’s low chances of getting him, but it’s good we are at least at the table.

Playing with languages is funny. I remember us going on a family holiday to Spain and visibly looking through a English-Spanish translation book at a cafe. When they came over, we were asking if they played tennis and we have 10 cats and a giraffe. The looks we got 🙂

I was in the Algarve in 2008 and I had bought a Sporting Club hat at the airport @ 4 euros and thought it looked really nice,,
The second day in to our holiday I took the whole family out for a meal, there was twelve of us.
So on entering the restaurant the owner came over to me,he was very polite and said he would take good care of us and serve us wonderful food.. “If I took that sheet off my head”
I was gobsmacked! He then went on to explain..
Apparently Sporting in the Algarve are Mackems? how the phook was I to know.. 😆

Karl Darlow. I think he’ll be given another chance and will take it. Pope and Dubravka will be great back up.

    Ed my good man,
You’re associating our winless first 14 games with Darlow in goal?!

That’s not how it played out, I can recall at least a couple of one on ones that our forwards missed.

We’re doing an injustice to Darlow, he’s done well for the club, including a player of the season award.

Given how much we’ve had to defend (and defend, and defend) in the last four five seasons, that’s good enough for staving off one relegation.

So, thanks monsieur Darlow if you read this stuff.
