Pope Arrives For Medical As Two Sensational Claims Hit The Headlines

Nick Pope has arrived on Tyneside for his medical ahead of a £10m move according to multiple outlets. We should see signing number two confirmed by the weekend.

Pope is an outstanding signing at the fee mentioned. His shot-stopping is elite while his distribution should improve under the tutelage of Eddie Howe. The 30-year-old will provide Martin Dubravka the competition he needs.

It’s not all roses in the headlines today. A couple of reports are putting a damper on the breakthrough for Pope. The Mail is reporting that Chelsea and Tottenham have enquired about Allan Saint-Maximin.

Newcastle set a price tag of £40m for the 25-year-old which the two Champions League clubs balked at. In the process, Saint-Maximin’s head was turned by the higher wages on offer at Chelsea and Spurs.

The crux of the report is that Saint-Maximin wants an improved contract on the one he signed in October of 2020. Newcastle are currently unwilling to enter talks with the Frenchman. We’ll see if anything comes from these claims.

90min is reporting that Newcastle have walked away from a deal to sign Hugo Ekitike due to his representatives’ excessive demands. The report claims personal terms have been agreed with the 20-year-old but additional fees to his agents have complicated matters.

Newcastle, however, remain interested in the Frenchman but will not come back to the table until his agents change their tune. They are reportedly now concentrating on other targets.

I take both of these reports with a healthy amount of skepticism. They have yet to be backed by other outlets so time will tell how accurate they are.

If Asm has a good season then give him a pay rise next Summer. He doesnt deserve a pay rise at this moment

    ‘First’ post I mean
    You’re up and running now

    Pope – agree
He didn’t join us to be second fiddle, I think he’ll start the season, partly because we have to win all our early matches and he’ll give confidence to the team.
Dubs hasn’t done anything wrong but Howe’s mindset is that he wants to start as we mean to go on, build a head of steam, turn SJP into the Fortress again ( as it was against Arsenal) and challenge all and sundry away from home.
No more Mr. Nice Guy so to speak.

I think it is quite obvious to the true Toon fan, or indeed the true Toon connoisseur that Pope has been bought to replace Dubs as no 1. keeper.

If this was not Howe’s intended plan – why buy him.

Mr Tuff will keep some of you boys right about the club – don’t worry.

No you are not the only one! I have championed us signing Morelos for a few seasons now even under Bruce/Ashley !

You get the “oh he plays in Scotland” and I think a lot of that plays into Boumsong but there are hardly any flops that come down from the SPL for decent money these days

Morelos did used to do daft things like kick players in the nuts when the referee wasn’t watching but he has cut that out of his game in the last 2 years he is the 3rd top scorer in Europa league history! Scored goals against big teams such as Porto, Dortmund, Lyon etc

For 8 million that would be bloody fantastic backup for Wilson and he could actually turn out to be better than him

Ekitike needs to change his Agent.

If he walks into SJP today, gets a French kiss from Max, meets Bruno, the big screen is showing some memorable moments and the sun is shining, followed by a nice cool Chablis at La Frais then he’s hooked, line and sinker. His future is right in front of him , he needs to take the opportunity.

Morelos over Lingard and Calvin-Lewis any day.
He would relish the chance and really make his name here.
If we buy Pope, we can buy him and he’ll feed off Max and Bruno all day long with goals.

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks Morelos would be superb business. The fact that Sevilla, a pretty reputable European club, are sniffing around him should surely make us think we should looking into him. He’s strong, fast, great finisher, fierce competitor and surely would relish the chance to step up from the SPL and take on the PL.

Would be silly not to at least be making enquiries, especially for the fee being touted.

Probably a good position to put ourselves in over the Ekitike deal. Walk away and leave it with the player and agent. This is our offer, take it or leave it. If the player wants the move i’m sure he can force it through, or the agent may realise they aren’t getting better anywhere else and come crawling back. We either get the player and show we won’t be bullied in negotiations, or we don’t get him and also show we won’t get bullied in negotiations. I’m sure we’ll have other targets.

Maxi hasn’t earned a new deal, but dangle the carrot and see what he does. But in no way, shape or form would I be selling him to Spurs or Chelsea for £40m. He’s worth more than that when selling him to a PL rival. I’d take £40m if it was from someone overseas though.

    On Pope,

If Howe goes with him as No 1 despite never being let down by Dubravka then it shows me he has the ruthless streak we need him to show to improve the team.

Pope is comfortably the better keeper out of the two for me, and should rightly be coming in as No 1.

Liken it to the situation at Manchester United. De Gea had a poor season the season before last when Henderson was on loan to Sheffield United with many speculating that Henderson would take over as No 1 when he came back into the fold. De Gea was dropped and Henderson was given his chance to impress and he pretty much fluffed his lines and was dropped again. When De Gea came back in he was undoubtedly Manchester United’s best player in what was broadly a terrible season for them.

Granted the comparison is a little different but I don’t think starting Dubs over Pope or vice versa at the start of the season is as clear-cut an indicator of how ruthless Howe is or not, but rather affording both players opportunities to prove themselves knowing they’ve got fierce competition for the jersey.

Dazzler – there were quite a few games where Dubs lost his bottle at set pieces – starting to come out for corners then bottling it. If you come out as a keeper you have to be 100% committed to get the ball.

If we are to sell ASM Then we should add Toon Tax on top of the price!

To be honest I’d take £40m for him – he’s good but we need more of an end product in way way of goals & assists!

    Mister Tuff,

For me it has been decision making that has cost him, there were numerous times last season (admittedly early on when coming back from injury) where he got caught in two minds whether to catch or punch and ended up doing some kind of useless hybrid of the two which meant the ball spilled to the opposition leading to a goal.

I can think of Norwich’s equaliser and Liverpool’s first goal before the new year off the top of my head. He did settle down toward the end of the season but he has these clangers in him that always undo his fantastic shot stopping ability.
