Howe Keen To Tie Down Leading Magpie On New Contract – Report

Newcastle have addressed the defense this window with the additions of Matt Targett on a permanent basis, goalkeeper Nick Pope, and marquee signing Sven Botman at center-back. The focus will soon shift to the final third in the hopes of adding goals to the squad.

One instant boost would be if Callum Wilson manages to stay fit for the bulk of the upcoming season. Wilson has been Newcastle’s top scorer for each of the last two campaigns despite missing long spells through injury.

The Mirror is reporting that Wilson will soon enter new contract talks with his current deal set to expire in just two years. This could be Wilson’s final chance at a bumper contract as passed the age of 30 earlier this year.

Eddie Howe remains an admirer of Wilson, who he also managed at Bournemouth. He is keen on tying the striker down long-term. Wilson’s return from a four-month injury this past May reminded everyone of his value to the team. A full season from Callum could see Newcastle fighting for a place in Europe.

Howe will still look to bring in more options up front and lessen the load on Wilson. So far, the window has proven extremely frustrating with the collapsed move for Hugo Ekitike and inflated quotes for other targets like Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Is it safe to come out to play?

On the subject of transfers I reckon things will die down for a couple of weeks and then a little burst with 2 or 3 in quick succession. Defo need a striker to lighten the load for Wilson and winger / creative player.

Not sure I’d be offering Wilson a new contract this summer. I’d want to see him get a good few games under his belt and show that he’s put his injury problems behind him before a new deal is put on the table.

Plus his age is against him. Injuries can linger longer and be harder to shake at his age. I’m sure we could move him on next summer if he’s struggling again this season.

To be clear, I like the lad. He definitely knows where the goal is and doesn’t seem to cause any bother in the dressing room. It’s just his injury record that concerns me. We need players on the pitch, not in the treatment room.

Can’t see us rushing into contract talks with Wilson. 30 year old still with 2 year on his current deal? I imagine we will be a completely different animal in 2 years time

Personally I would hope we upgrade on Wilson next summer, or whoever comes in this summer makes the step up during the season and we get another good young un next summer. Because as sure as night follows day Wilson will have an injury lay off this season.

Think he’s a great lad to have around Wilson. Comes across as a real leader. Injuries aside, think its a no brainer to have him here for a couple more year. Think he could get 20+ this season. He’s consistently scored goals in poorish prem sides so in a good one he could be gravy

Who knows. I think the club are working on getting new players in on a daily basis. They’re probably meeting regularly to reassess where they’re at after getting rejections and then focusing on new targets.

I think a deal could happen tomorrow just as likely as it could next week. It all depends on if the conditions are right.

If a club knows it has a quality player who wants away then can either try to hang onto him for as long as they can, or get a good price as soon as possible so they have time to find a replacement. So many variables and each club conducts its transfer business differently.

Depends on how much money he wants and how well the medical team assess his fitness. You need 3 centre forwards. He’s the main man now, and definitely very good, but in two years, he’d probably be second fiddle, and in 3 or 4, third, but that can still be very valuable to us.

I’ve said it before, and I may need to email the Harrisons about it, but this blog needs a simple code of conduct that everyone can read. Break it and you’re suspended for a period, break it 3 times and you’re banned.

Cheers for that! I saved the final league standings for both leagues and I’ll figure out a way to get the relevant codes to all parties.

If anyone in your list of league one players doesn’t sign up by a certain deadline (I’ll try and keep that open for as long as possible) then I’ll have to bump up the next highest person from your league two list. I can’t put the second League together until I’ve fully filled League one, if that makes sense?

Those names that Wor B posted are everyone that played in the H2H from last season. Assuming everyone rejoins that’s what this season’s leagues will look like.

If anyone drops out I’ll open up places to new people and if it’s really popular then I’ll open up a third league.

I think we were mainly focused on people who regularly (or semi-regularly) post on the blog so we can have some (friendly) banter. We had a bunch of people last season in there who I’d never heard of before on the blog!

People should act their age and stop the sarcastic comments that get way out of hand, its like being back at school..

I had a detailed discussion with Jail last week on how the gaps should be filled.

My take is to move everyone up in each Div for every gap created by a drop-out.

Then fill the empty slots at the bottom of Div2 with applicants who were in Ed’s main league with the best scores first.

The rest will hopefully make up a 3rd Div.

Did you play last season? The H2H is the only part of it that needs closed invites, the main Ed Harrison league is open to absolutely anyone. If we don’t end up with enough for a third league you’ll still be able to play in the main league. We had over 150 people in that league last year and about the same the year before if I recall.

We could also set up a Scottish style league of only ten teams for the third division if we fall short and people are willing to do that. We’ll see how it goes…

    Re. League position.
Don’t see how we can predict final position as it depends on how well other teams do as well as ourselves.
I’m expecting 70 points, wherever that gets us, I’ll still deem it successful, with the project moving forward.
