Newcastle Cruise To 3-0 Win Over 1860 Munich

Eddie Howe only made one change after a scoreless first half against 1860 Munich. Svet Botman was brought on for Jamaal Lascelles.

Newcastle had two early chances. In the opening minute, Anderson surged into the area on the left. He laid the ball back for Wilson, whose shot was fired over the bar. At the 50-minute mark, Murphy pushed into the box on the right but his centered pass was snuffed out by the Munich keeper.

In the 54th minute, Joe Willock broke the deadlock. It was a beautiful move from the lads. Murphy found Shelvey who had burst into the box. The midfielder laid the ball back for Willock, who tucked it into the top of the net with his left foot to make it 1-0.

At 60 minutes, the cavalry arrived as Howe made ten changes. Newcastle were nice enough to tweet out the lineup for the final 30 minutes.

It was 2-0 just minutes later. Sean Longstaff was brought down on the right flank. The set-piece was played to Bruno who found the elder Longstaff in the box at a similar spot as Willock’s goal. Sean planted the ball into the net with his right foot.

In the 75th minute, Newcastle got a third goal from the midfield. Bruno won the ball deep and passed to Wood in the box. The striker passed the ball back to Bruno who slotted it home to make it 3-0.

This was a decent run-out for the lads who took time to grow into the game. That is to be expected this early in the pre-season. Next up is Mainz on Monday as the Austrian trip starts to wind down.

So in clarification, from the first half, to add to the second half, Jonjo, Pope, Wilson. Burns for what would look like the starting 11 between the two sets of teams.

And sorry that’s all I can say about that.

Sven looked perfect, good awareness, good passing, good in the air.

When are you doing the season predictions again? Want to stake my flag down early and say Joelinton will be player of the season again 😀

Botman looking every bit the player I expected. So calm and composed. He will be huge player for us over the next 5+ years.

Big joe is a beast nuff said…

    Bruno oozes class…

Botman will start against Forrest 😉 he looked class! Pope, Botman, Bruno, Wilson, that is a great central line to build the team around.

Today was hardly a test for the defence, it was a stroll in the park. Botman is obviously going to be a strong presence and can pass the ball very well, but until he goes up against the better players in the league we won’t know how well he will do.

    From previous

What I liked about Botman as well was the accurate passes at distance. I think you could see some defense splitting passes from him for us in the future. As a Dutch player his technical ability will be right up there. He looks the business albeit on an admittedly small sample size.

    The things you do
You don’t just give the ball away
    The things you do
    You’re SVENBELIEVABLE.

    Take on the EMF song.

God I hope I hear that getting sung at St James’s

Aye, Botman looked calm and composed but in reality he didn’t really need to get out of second gear. Nobody in our defence had to. Be interesting to see how he does in some of the friendlies closer to the start of the season, when they tend to be a bit more intense. Obviously when the season starts and he has a couple of games in the league under his belt.

The signs were good though and no suggestion that he won’t have a good season for us and be a very good player.

Don’t think we can take much from todays game other than match fitness – we looked a different league when we upped the pace 2nd half but then again we are, 1860 are league 3 in Germany after all.

We seemed to move up through the gears and class level 2nd half.

Everything was done with more purpose.

Controversy incoming. I think Fraser is better than ASM in the team.

NB, not as an individual player, but in the team.

Maxi seems to have ditched all the bandages so no longer looks like an Egyptian mummy.

Fraser has not grown at all during the break. His legs are only 2′ long.

Wood clearly has not been doing any private speed work.

I think I’d be happy if we sold ASM, used the money towards getting Diaby, Paqueta + a striker.

Fraser would do a decent job for us on left wing with Anderson as his back up.

Thought Longstaff had a tidy game when he came on too. Let’s hope under Howe he can get back to when he first came onto the scene, then go even further and improve.

Adamn_92 @4 – A bit keen – maybe because you are the current prediction king 😀
I mentioned this the other day but for those who missed it I always run prediction game the week before the first PL game which give us a chance to assess the new signings in the friendlies etc.
So this year I will probably launch it on Sunday 31 July or possibly Monday 1 August (as I’m out on Sunday) and accept predictions until about 12pm on Saturday 6 August when I go to the match 😀

Only saw first half, then the PP3 battery in the WiFi at the place we were at, gave in!

We need ASM to get up quicker, could hear the bench ‘Get up Maxi’ all the time, I still have my doubts about him but I am hoping he realises what he can be part of next season, fingers crossed.

    Good save by Pope !

The youngin looks like he can play a bit, I would still send him out on loan though to a Championship club, maybe just til January.

Seems the best football was second half, will bring more PP3’s next time over here.

    Take care you lot

Final word on ASM. He clearly looks leaner and fitter than last season, but I’m not sure he has the intelligence to make the right decisions at the right time.

His whole career to date has been about, get the ball, run at the opposition see how many you can beat.

Now he’s being asked to make a choice between dribbling or looking for a pass and he looked as if he didn’t know what to do a few times today. A bit like S. Longstaff last season. That hesitancy is fatal. If the players from Munich 1860 can steal the ball from you, you’ll get murdered in the PL.

I know it’s still early in pre season, but there seems a big gap between ASM now and ASM the superstar winger we want to see.

i know it’s early and just a friendly, but the way Schar and Botman were spraying passes around in the 2nd half got me excited and really opened everything up – no need for Jonjo now sitting deep because Lascelles cannot move the ball; I really like the fluidity with those 2 on the bench

Despite my reservations above. I’m very content at overall position so far.

We’ve got the core of a very good team, we just need to add some stardust.

I think we’d be mad to not get Diaby, Paqueta and a striker!!

I’d be well chuffed with our potential line up then, top 6 easy.

Almiron, Fraser and Murphy can hold the fort down the right hand side for a season.
Joe and Bruno with Lucas in front will be mint.

That commentary, he didn’t know who was who!!
First half Shelvey, much better second half. And just wow for Sven Botman, what a player, lovely goal by Sean, but still not quick enough in possession, Bruno fantastic, Joe bit too enthusiastic, Miggy, well he’s just the same full of running,
I’m with Bob, Maxi still falling down and throwing his arms around. Plus he doesn’t look happy.
But it’s the first game so we’ll see how they progress.

If teams now double up on Maxi and block that side of the field it will be spun quickly back to Botman who shall lash it across the pitch to Trips in space. In time teams will have to give Maxi more space to play. Beautiful

someone mentioned ice hockey. Was given a VIP ticket for European Champs semi final a few years back when working in Prague. Sparta Praha vs a Swedish team. There was netting behind the away supporters goal and a serious amount of stewards. I asked my friend, who gave me the invite and she said… just wait. When Sparta went 4-2 up the swedes rioted. The netting was to stop the beer glasses, and beer reaching the ice. Apparently just standard for ice hockey.
    I enjoyed the game 🙂

Didn’t realise Mainz fans wanted our fixture cancelled…

FSV Mainz 05 will play Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly in Kufstein on Monday, 18th July as part of the club’s training camp. The club’s management made this decision on Monday. There had been discussions between the agency Onside, the training camp partner of Mainz, Newcastle’s club management and FSV’s.

Some Mainz fans, including the fan association, wanted the friendly to be cancelled due to Newcastle’s ownership structure – the Magpies are owned by a Saudi Arabian consortium. The club wants to hold talks with fan representatives.

Well I enjoyed that. I don’t understand any criticism of players. It was a friendly, played at a higher altitude than they’re used to. That explains the over hit balls and some of the players blowing towards the end of the first half. Dummett did okay given he’s been out for such a long time. Second half brought some adjustments then changes. The passing was slick and all three goals were well taken. Bruno stood out for me, Botman looks very calm and assured. Overall I think Eddie and the team will be pleased.

The only concerns were the two yellow cards. Lascelles looked like a red card waiting to happen while Joe’s was mistimed. I like to see full blooded effort but not necessarily in a friendly.

If they put the game on the website I would certainly watch again.
