Newcastle had a decent first 45 minutes against 1860 Munich at the SaalfeldenArena with Emil Krafth and Elliot Anderson impressing. Allan Saint-Maximin had a few opportunities but Munich had the match’s best chances in the scoreless first half.
Eddie Howe set the lads up in a 4-2-3-1 with Pope in goal behind a back four of Krafth, Lascelles, Burn, and Targett. Shelvey and Willock were the midfielders with Anderson behind Wilson as a number 10. Murphy was on the right with Saint-Maximin on the left.
Ten minutes in and 1860 Munich had the match’s first chance. From a corner, Lakenmacher (who bears a striking resemblance to Erling Haaland) glanced his header wide of Pope’s far post from 8 yards out. It was a good chance left wanting from our opponents.
In the 16th minute, Murphy won a free-kick deep on the right flank. He played the set-piece to Shelvey at the top of the box but he shafted his shot and it dribbled wide of the target for a goal kick.
Burn took down Tallig just outside the area for a free kick for Munich. Kobylanski fired the set-piece to the far corner but a diving Nick Pope palmed the ball around the post for a corner.
In the 27th minute, Munich had another good chance from a corner. Tallig’s corner just missed a flying Munich player before it was cleared to a Salger outside the box. The defender’s shot was deflected out for another corner by Anderson. Elliot also cleared a goalward header from the subsequent corner.
Saint-Maximin got a couple of shots in the 38th minute. A ball over the top sent the Frenchman to the byline where he skipped past a defender into the box before his shot was blocked. Krafth floated a cross from the right flank less than a minute later but Allan’s header was cleared by the Munich keeper.
We will likely see some changes to start the second half. Sven Botman could take his first bow for Newcastle. Hopefully, Anderson gets more minutes as he has been one to watch in the opening stages.

Question: If a player is sent off in the first half do the team coming on for the second half play with 10 or 11 players?

Comment #11Have a feeling that the commentator doesn’t know who Anderson is, he never uses his name when he is involved in play.

Anderson seemed to get in some good positions and good spaces, but think he’s trying too hard to impress. By which I mean when he’s had it he’s made a few silly mistakes which I think is likely down to overthinking. Prime example was out wide it was a simple enough pass to him and he just didn’t control it well and then struggled to get it back under control, eventually just led to it going harmlessly out of play. Thinking too much about trying to impress was my initial thinking. Just needs to relax and not worry about trying too hard to impress.
Other than that though, was never going to be an amazing match as it’s just about getting the yards in to have that ‘match fitness’. Looks like we’re trying out a new shape too as didn’t seem to look like our usual 4-3-3 that half.

Comment #15So going off peoples ideas of friendlies does that mean Man U will smash Liverpool next season…? Will they finish above them…? Considering they battered them 4-0…
It’s a friendly lads and that’s all it is. Results or even the way we play means nothing. Wait till the two home friendlies as that will be when we will go out with a strong side and try to win.

Comment #18I hope the commentator is replaced for the second half.
He never stops talking.
I think he told us where every player comes from. At this rate he will move onto their families.

On Elliot, he’s been playing in ASM’s position for Bristol Rovers so I’d give him some leeway. Plus he did well there (as I type!).

Comment #27Is Pope the same height as Burn? He looks massive! He just needs to lie down across the goal and they’ll never get one in the bottom corner

Comment #28He’s started the second half much better. Didn’t have a bad first half by any means, just personally felt at times he was trying a bit too much. His talent and ability is there to be seen though. Makes good runs into space and seems to have good link up play between the lines of the opposition midfield and defence. Signs he could become a very good number 10 over time, especially with his decent loan spell recently.
