Newcastle Striker Undergoing Medical With Championship Club

The Telegraph’s John Percy is reporting that Stoke City are close to landing Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle. The 32-year-old has completed the initial part of his medical with confirmation expected by the end of the week.

Eddie Howe recently touched on Dwight’s situation at Newcastle confirming his future lies elsewhere. The poacher has not joined the group for the pre-season. He initially trained with the U21s along with Jeff Hendrick and Ciaran Clark.

Clark joined Sheffield United for a season-long loan while Hendrick has gone to Reading, where he has scored twice already in pre-season. It looks like Gayle will follow them out the door on what is reported to be a permanent deal.

Gayle is a proven Championship goalscorer who was outstanding in his inaugural season on Tyneside. Dwight scored 23 league goals that season to help fire Newcastle back into the Premier League.

However, he managed just 6 goals the following campaign before joining West Brom on loan for the 2019/20 season. Dwight found the back of the net 23 times helping the Baggies regain their top-flight status.

This is an excellent opportunity for Gayle with the Potters, who only had one player (Jacob Brown) reach double figures in goals last term. If Gayle can stay fit, he should be afforded plenty of chances to do what he does best, which is score goals for promotion-hungry sides.

Mission be rid mate at any cost.

I knew some of them would have to be given free transfers to get them off the books.

Gayle might even be getting a pay-off from us to get rid of him, especially if his current wages are higher than the wages he’ll be getting at Stoke.

I like Manq and I like Fede, and would keep both ahead of Krafth and Lascelles, but that might be overly sentimental thinking. I just think they are both better on the ball.

Onmeedsun, just had a nightmare of an afternoon helping my eldest lad write examples to apply for his Chartered Accountancy practising certificate.

Here in Ottawa, I use both terms. Sometimes I say what’s for supper or who’s coming for dinner. All the same. If I ask the wife if she wants tea I put the kettle on. Could never understand how “tea” could include a meal. I don’t recall supper/dinner being called “tea” when I was a lad living in England.

Afternoon tea is what my mam and sister go for, doesn’t make it a meal… breakfast in morning, dinner about 1, tea about 6/7 is what I’ve always known… couldn’t be eating a full meal this time of night.

Good luck to your lad with his accountancy stuff. It’s kept me in gainful employment for nearly 40 years and is a great platform for any career in business. Numbers are all well and good, but it’s really all about good decision making and how you present numbers to facilitate that.

My Nan’s generation used to call the midday meal “dinner” and the evening meal “tea” as well. Now it’s always lunch then dinner. I still call the evening meal tea though. (this is in Australia)

Onmeedsun, too true. I have a business with 5, soon to be six sites, but employ an MD who has a good grasp for numbers. However, I do need to reign him in sometimes as he often doesn’t see the bigger picture. Plus, it’s not his money that he’s playing with. 🙂

A few have questioned why Gayle was given a three year contract not long ago. My guess would be it would ensure we had a hotshot championship striker to get us back up again if/when we were relegated, which was more than likely before Eddie took over…and even looked probable at Christmas. Keeping Gayle at the club was ultimately an insurance policy for a struggling team under a poor manager and clueless owner. Now that’s all changed, he’s not needed anymore. But good luck to him!

Its for the best and a good move for Dwight Gayle. Vaya con dios, amigo!

I’m all for being positive but describing having to give away a top Championship striker on a free as ‘A Dan Ashworth Masterstroke’ as one well known fan page did, is a bit of a stretch? Its an embarrassment for the club is what it is. We are still tidying up the mess left after Mike Ashley’s Newcastle binge…
